Marvellous Dale Marvell - was quite successful at Carshalton, then played a couple of games for us under John Rains but didn't really impress, worked very hard but didn't have much luck.
Apparently now prefers to 'enjoy' his football at E&E - he's too good for that level and could perhaps still do a job but yes, he did play well in that match.

OK thanks, but please don't shoot me down in flames as i have no knowledge whatsoever of the club's various sources of income. However based on attendance/gate money alone surely Sutton must be the top earners in this league ? The Carshalton game by my calculations took the average to slightly over 600. No other club is averaging 500 and only three others are averaging 400.Tooting and Carshalton,to name but two (as they are local) are way behind on attendances so surely way behind on takings ? Dartford are way higher. Quite right Vern, sorry !I didn't notice them above the line though of course i should have known as they are way clear. I'm sure you get the point i'm making though.

Unfortunately, gate money alone has for many years not been enough to sustain a club at this level. SUFC have relied on various other incomes over the years. The incredibly generous sponsorship given by Securicor over a great many years was most helpful. Sadly that is no longer available (at least not at the level it was). However, through hard work by the club and the generosity and interest of local business, we do still attract sponsors (as the shirts testify to!).
We also had a thriving lottery ticket business until the National Lottery was launched in the early 90's.
No doubt the Boom Boom Club helps bring in substantial funds over the bar. The social facilities have always been a source of income to the club.
How some of the other clubs get by is beyond me but the dangers of relying on one man as some appear to is obvious. Fortunately, U's are not and have never been in that situation.
A prudent Board of Directors has been what has kept this club going over the years plus some good managers who have used their contacts to get the players they want generally within budget.

How about the fans sponsoring a goalscorer ? Say Jolly for argument's sake though i'm sure you lads know a few more.
The club pays what they feel is realistic and the supporters chip in with the rest.

Jolly is on a grand a week, or at least he was when Ide was with them. Maybe Dipstick cut their wage, and that's why Ide pissed off.
I'm sure Dundas was on a fair bit wasn't he - that's why Dos let him go?
I think most players get a wee bit per week, plus appearance money, and a win bonus.

Where did Ide go ? Was he the bloke who scored the last gasp equaliser at Easter ?

From what I know (and I could be wrong) we did make an enquiry for Jolly over the summer, and found out that his wages alone would have taken a third of our entire players wages budget. So Dos, quite rightly passed. It is prudent not to pay out loads on one player and then filling the side with lesser mortals - If that player gets injured, then thats your season screwed.
Dundas was on quite a lot, but that was as a result of a 2 year contract signed in our relegation season, where money was put into the club by the directors to avoid relegation, which sadly didn't work. As a result when Dos came in, he was stuck with Dundo (which wasn't a bad thing) but he didn't fit in the wage structure for the rest of the club.
Its a perennial talking point - as said earlier on this thread, I don't know how come clubs do it. How Thurrock for example in the CS manage to keep up there with no fans is beyond me! Dartford do have a much larger budget than us, but then they get 1000+ crowd, a free ground and substantial income from their social facilities. As a result they are where they are, whilst at the other end, you have teams like Waltham who could be classed as punching above their weight.
There are a lot of questions that this whole thing brings up, but there is one thing for sure. Any club that 'tries' to buy success will eventually fail. Some go out of existence whilst others have a sad decline (see Weymouth and Lewes). The best thing is to not stretch your resources, and have a manager who can attract decent players without money, but with their managing skills - Dos is certainly that, and John Rains was before that (one could even argue that Alan Gane did to an extent)
As for Bobbin land - well as you can see as the money is starting to run out, so is the motivation....

As i said i think the team is far better than last year, but they are in exactly the same situation as at this point last year.
Someone who can tuck the chances away on a regular basis would be nice , and the play offs would be a certainty.

His Dad's property/other businesses as far as i know. Thought he was someone who was playing with gifted money, rather than a self-made man.

Where did Ide go ? Was he the bloke who scored the last gasp equaliser at Easter ? Last I heard he was at Chertsey Town - I'd expect he was there as its near home (he's from Sunbury)

Well if there is one thing I hate and bang on about is playing sides and generally losing to them, having their supporters do things like take the mick when you know fall well that they don't have a pot to p*ss in. Lewes did this and although they are making an attempt to pay back their debts, I wish them a long time in obscurity with their now avg crowd of less then 300. Weymouth are fools to themselves, I think they were paying @25k a week in wages at one point? My main prediction is that a certain Essex club we played recently will not exist this time next year as they are running out of options and time and are currently trying to sell what is akin to tickets for a cruise on the titanic to its fans?

Ide is playing County league football again? FFS. Really is criminal. That bloke should be Conference National level easily....
