I thought I would have a look back at just how many goals we have conceded from set pieces and these are the stats:
Free kicks 13 goals From Throws 4 Goals From OG's 2 Goals Mistakes 2 Goals
Although I did not exactly count the number conceded from crosses into the box from open play if you add these to free kicks you get over 20.
Excluding the Horsham cup game with have conceded 31 goals this season and 17 over 50% have come from dead ball situations. It is clear with have a problem in that area and if we did'nt we would probably be sitting comfortably in 2nd place!
What we are expecting our forwards to do is out score our defensive frailties and as Kevin Keegan knows unless you are Brazil it won't happen?

We might have expected the team to look a bit rusty after being without a game for two and a half weeks - but not to give the opposition a 3-0 head start by playing statues at corners and throw-ins. Pouton's penalty might have been a lifeline had we not conceded again early in the second half, this time from a free kick. We were a lot better from then on, especially after the triple substiution brought on Watts, Hann and Quarm - but we still couldn't score from open play. The game itself didn't produce much in the way of flowing football, with a succession of fouls committed by both sides. This wasn't the first time this season that we failed to take advantage of a home match on a day when not many other sides in our division were playing. As it happens, tonight's results drop us down to ninth. I'm now harbouring major doubts about whether this team is good enough to make the play-offs.

And you might be surprised to learn that most Australians do have English as their first language. Not sure where you're going with that...

ok prepared to be attacked here - don't go to every game but here are my thoughts:
1. Why doesn't Steve Watts start the game. He improves the side when he has come on in the last two games. I am not a fan of Sam Gargan I feel he does not have the presence necessary.
2. Using Birmingham as this years example - most succesful teams have a settled side. I see Sutton twice a month and every time there are two players I have never seen before. Granted tonights newcomer looked a good player is there not a case for a settled side?
3. Most importantly - why do I have to wait 5 mins for chips at half time in the bar? Isn't it obvious that about 10 people will order chips? If chips are not bought what is the loss incurred? can only be under couple of quid. I missed a goal today because of this.

Hmm. Couldn't make it last night but was half expecting an iffy result given we're not match sharp and Ashford were following their game on Sat. Wasn't quite expecting to see that result and then read that we didn't bother defending dead ball's... again! All season I've been worried when the oppo get a free kick, corner or throw in near our 18 yard box as we just haven't been able to deal with the incoming ball.
We really need to pick ourselves up, dust down and bloody get on with it.
Anywho, Ewelchris:- Sam seems to drift in and out of games for me but I do think he gets an unfair amount of stick.
The revolving door has been discussed on another thread or three and the main thing is that at this level players come and go all the time, be it personal reasons or trying to get the wage budget right.
As for the chip saga, I agree that our catering is a little slow. I say little, I mean very. Maybe someone needs to give 'em a nudge and let them know that they need to pre-prepare more.

Steve Watts is still working his way back to fitness after a number of long term injuries, otherwise I'm sure he'd be starting matches. That said, I think Gargan's main problem is a lack of confidence at the moment. First few games of the season I thought he looked excellent.
Which brings me to point 2...
Couldn't agree more about the lack of a settled side. I made this point before the game too. Gargan being a case in point, he's been playing up front on his own for most of the season, but the supporting players have constantly changed - making it hard for them to form an understanding.
Finally, I can't comment on the chip situation. I can only empathise, but perhaps if you had a snack midway through the first half from Rose's, it would staunch your hunger sufficiently to resolve the problem.

27 players in the league so far this year, I make it, but no spare centre half. AJ is a fine full back, but when the opposition's no. 9 has a free header from a set piece, something is dreadfully wrong.
I've also moved into the "play Watts from the start" camp. He looks like a genuine goal scorer which, for all the possession we have, we lack. If he tires, sub him then.
On the plus side, Francis Quarm! He always seemed to have time on the ball and sprayed accurate passes out to both wings and through the middle. Is this the playmaker we've lacked since, erm, Nicky Bailey?

have to add about the chip place. Waiting 10min to get served when there is no queue is unacceptable

Agree Watts looks ready to start now. If we can get 60 minutes out of him he might get the job done! Still needs someone to play up front with -Taylor does not convince in front of goal and you can't play Watts and Gargan IMO.

Had a feeling in my bones last night would be crap in some form or another. Seems to be a 6th sense I've picked up from somewhere..... However, as already touched on, the defending last night was pathetic. F*cking pathetic. Apart from the set pieces, they created very very little from open play. Just as well really! Seems that for every Wealdstone game, there's 2-3 like last night. If it's not the defence having a shocker, it's the midfield having a mare and starving the forwards. And if it's not the midfield or defence f*cking it up, it's the forwards failing by not being able to hit a barn door. Plus points? Erm........that Francis Quarm looked good. Especially considering he's not played since the end of August.

Taz, next time you get "a feeling in your bones", can you let me know and I'll stay in and put a DVD on instead?
Actually, I retract that because one positive thing I will say is that at least last night's game was entertaining; we occasionally played fast, attacking football and created a lot of chances. We just need to start matches with that level of aggressive attacking intent.
And, of course, learn to defend properly.

The first thing i would say about last nights game is that it was hugely entertaining despite the score line. Our defending was woeful and getting out of this division will be impossible without changes.I still don't understand why we let Bradley Thomas go when clearly the skipper was struggling.Maybe Steve Perkins was the cover and it was unfortunate he got injured but he still didn't come on yesterday and either centre back could get a knock. AJ can cover but we need him at left back as James Hawes doesn't seem to do it wherever he plays and i'm surprised he hasn't gone through the door. His brother is adequate when the others are fit but so far i can't recall us scoring a goal this season from his long throws. Quarm looks a good signing and if Taylor had put away just a few of his many chances we could have won. However that would paper over the cracks. We need another centre back as a matter of urgency.
