Well done to the youths also tonight who having gone 6-0 up in around half an hour sealed the victory 9-2 against Chipstead in the Surrey Youth Floodlit Cup, with Joe Wornham grabbing 6.

The best you can say about the game at Guildford was that we avoided another embarrassment against Combined Counties League opposition.
The match was played on a heavy pitch and littered with stoppages. Once we'd gone 2-0 up inside the first half hour the game drifted towards the final whistle. I reckon Guildford managed more shots on target than we did, and Scrivs was forced to make some decent saves, including a double effort in the first few minutes.
Jerson looked our most dangerous player early on and took his goal well, but after that I thought his play became rather sloppy - exemplified when he was put clean through for his second but could only produce a tame chip into the keeper's arms.
AJ picked up a knock in the second half (after we'd brought on three subs) and I hope is OK for Saturday.

Dull game that we really never got into. Scored in our first real attack thanks to some dreadful defending, then the pen soon after. Picked up 3 silly yellows as well. Highlight of the evening was probably their no6 re-enacting to the ref what he clearly felt was a dive for the pen. Strange ground. Typically soulless running track experience, but I quite liked the elevated viewing position on the 'curva sud'. Reminded me of some of the pics you see of Serie C type grounds. All that was missing was a few banners saying stuff like "1898 Boys", some flares and everyone bouncing up & down twirling their scarves above their heads as 50 Carabinieri look menacingly on. ;D Palace or Croydon next round. Wooo. Thanks but no thanks......

Quite correct KBB. I'd forgotten Stuart Young's card along with Jerson, AJ & DP.

I'm still gutted I couldn't make it as I really wanted to see the ground for some reason. We're getting annoyingly close to some silverware... three games to go.

It wasn't Stuart Young, it was Charlie Taylor!
Low key match, U's did enough but picked up too many bookings & I hope AJ is ok.
Deffo pen, whatever the Guildford people think, although Jerson's fall was unnecessarily theatrical. The 4's reaction after he had caught Jerson said it all.
Difficult pitch, but won't they all be now? Enjoyed the elevated view but I'm glad we don't go there every week.

It wasn't Stuart Young, it was Charlie Taylor! Feck it, it was a bloke on the pitch in a Sutton shirt.

Guildford City have an average home League attendance of 49 and, obviously, have a passionate, albeit, extremely small group of people who drive the club on, evidenced by a friendly reception and a well put together programme, a labour of love read by so few each week.
The fact is they are faced with a truly thankless job made all the more sad when one considers the potential catchment area amid such a big conurbation. Over the Christmas period I took my family to an ice hockey fixture at the Spectrum which attraced 1,868 people to watch Guildford Flames and yet only 49 folk drag themselves to watch their local football team 100 yards away?
One of their biggest problems has to be that dreadful venue - quite possibly the most soulless, dreary, visually unappealing arena in which I have ever watched Sutton play football and I'm sure the experience can't have been all that enjoyable for the players either.
I read all about their history in the excellent programme and am delighted for them that they have a team to watch at all from their potched history ,but, unlike many Combined Counties grounds I've been to which do have character, that place is enough to make you reach for the pills.
I take my hat off to their loyal supporters and was pleased we didn't slip up against them. Let's get to the final now and celebrate promotion via the Play-Offs with a cup final against AFCW!
However,

The basketball side, Guidlford Heat, get reasonable attendances as well I believe. Very strange. Can only assume that when it comes to sport, the Flames & Heat don't have any real competition. Whereas when it comes to football, everyone is a Chelsea, Man Utd or Liverpool 'fan' these days. If we had an equivalent to the NBA or NHL, then it would probably be a similar case. As for the ground, not great, but at least it had the elevated viewing position. Which in my book, keeps it ahead of Croydon Arena!
