Ended 0-0 does not sound like those who travelled were very impressed. But an away point against an up-for-it promoted side would not have sounded like the end of the world yesterday.......

Concord were a typical big strong Essex side and a pretty tough oppo that seemed up for the game, we al said we would be happy with a point and have to say i am. Set pieces need to be worked on a little as communication a couple of times seemed to let us down. Jols worked hard up front and had a couple of half chances that were well thwarted by the home side and Dunford had the best chances in the first half after the ball fell to him on the edge of the box from the keeper's clearance but hit it at the defender to prevent us takng the lead.
I think Concord played for the point, setting up as 4-5-1 at home and were never very adventurous, we're going to get this alot this year and it will be a frustrating season trying to break these sides down but it's what we've got to do to have a chance at the title.

Just back, not a very good game made very scrappy at times by a Concord team which showed little ambition to get forward and were time wasting from well inside the first half. We were the better side all afternoon if that counts for anything and Kev had little work to do apart from regulation stuff. The pitch was like the Yorkshire Dales only more bumpy, the bounce totally unpredictable and when the ball was in the air as usual for Canvey the ball just wanted to hang there. We did have 2 good efforts parried away of course falling to safety and two really good calls for a pen, first for a defender controlling the ball with his arm adjudged to be outside the box, I am sure like most others it was inside? The second when Jolly was wrestled to the ground while shielding the ball in the box. The closest we came was a long straight free kick into the box which the keeper completely misjudged getting just fingertips on the ball which came off the outside of the post. That makes 9 goals now in all matches with an additional 7 efforts hitting the woodwork and falling to safely??
The bobbly pitch gave CR time to close down and we never really worked the space well enough to get clear sight of goal. I agree with Chalmers we need to break these sides down, no ifs and no buts if we are to win the league.

Just got back. Well based on the balance of play 0-0 was more than a bit unfair on the U's today, but when you create only 3 goalscoring chances you don't have the right to complain to much! TBH the performance from Sutton wasn't to the standard of a team that should be challenging for the top. Don't get me wrong I was impressed with the performances of more than a few players today, and if any team deserved to win we did. But saying that Concord had an obvious gameplan and they stuck to it, and it they achieved it. We don't have a divine right to win every game just because we have an amazing squad and because of that squad teams will adjust the way they play, and I daresay we'll see more opposition performances like that before the end of April. It appears that to many people have unrealistic expectations about Sutton this season. Oh well. Positives: 1) We didn't lose. 2) We never looked uncomfortable at the back. 3) Fola and Dundas. Negatives: 1) Hoofing the ball forward. It became to easy for the Concord defence. 2) If we are to win the league we'll have to learn to break teams like this down, and we need to learn fast. Anything else? Remember the score of the opening day of the 98/99 season? It's a marathon not a snickers (thanks fluffy! ) C'MON SUTTON!

Was there a lot of hoofing? Last season the hoofing was a pain at GGL, especially with our wind.

Sorry about the report on the club site. It's all there, I just can't seem to get the formatting right. Don't worry, Scoop Dolbear is back in time for Tuesday's game.

sounds as if the pitch was horrific and from some of these descriptions would be better suited to a sunday league side!

Unfortunately we didn't get the ball down and play it along the ground.Pumping it forward in the air played into Concord's hands.

Thats true but the pitch was never going to make the ball on the deck easy. My main complaint from today would be our delivery from set pieces and crosses, it was awful all afternoon.

At the recent meet-the-manager night Dos lamented the number of chances created but not converted last season. On today's evidence that's a problem we've yet to resolve - although, to be fair, none of our openings was exactly gilt-edged, and that's a tribute to Concord's defending.
I thought our defence and midfield were decent today. Jolly worked hard up front, but I sense that he needs a bit more support if we're to make the most of his abilities. The Dundas-Jolly partnership promises much but still looks like work-in-progress.
