Tomorrow night we have our first home game of the league season and a chance to build on Saturday’s decent start at Harrogate.
Judging by Dos’ post-Harrogate interview Dale Bennett might miss out due to injury so can we expect Nicky Bailey to drop into to right-back and Kenny Davis to come into the side? I presume Wayne Brown will be missing still whilst he awaits international clearance - Dos reckons he’ll be a real asset once he’s received this.
Eastleigh started poorly on Saturday with a narrow defeat at home against Solihull - I’ll be a tad disappointed if we fail to pick up maximum points from this one. We won the corresponding fixture at GGL last season 2-0 and included a great goal from Tommy Wright.

I'll be interested to know when Wayne Brown's international clearance request was put in, as the FA has a maximum of 30 days to issue the International Transfer Certificate. He certainly looks like a very talented prospect from that showreel with the ghastly soundtrack I watched...

I'm expecting a tough game tonight.

Only one win for Eastleigh from their last seven competitive fixtures, and that was against Solihull Moors, on 28 April. After Richard Hill's terse post-match interview following Saturday's defeat, I think they'll come out all guns blazing this evening. There should be plenty of opportunity to hit them on the counter for Taylor, Bolarinwa et al...

"Watching" on the BBC website isn't quite the same as being there!
Good to see 3 points but only marginally less pleasing to see Salford finding it a little trickier than I assume they were thinking it would be. Harrogate on the right end of a last minute goal too I see.
I can't wait for September to be back watching things properly, live.

1-0 to Sutton. Not the prettiest of games, played in intermittent rain, and, as so often against Eastleigh, the ball spent a lot of time in the air. There were very few shots on target, the result being settled by Jamie Collins's first-half penalty, his second successful spot kick in two matches. (All three of our goals so far have been scored by centre backs.) The referee, our old friend David Rock, had already waved away a couple of Sutton penalty appeals when Tom Bolarinwa went down under a challenge from Josh Hare. On this occasion Mr Rock had no hesitation in pointing to the spot.
Tommy Wright started this game, supporting Ross up front, with Tombo and Dan Wishart providing the width, the latter in for Josh Taylor. One other change from Saturday was Kenny Davis starting in place of Nicky Bailey. Tommy made a few promising runs but didn't manage a clear sight of goal.
That's a satisfying 4 points from two games, putting us 6th on the table. Next Saturday's visitors Salford City intriguingly lost 2-1 at early pacesetters Gateshead.

I think Eastleigh will struggle tbh, despite us not being potent in front of goal, the only real effort they mustered was a desperate dive from their keeper in added time.
Without any real threat on our goal we didn't have to set the place alight to win this one. Defensively we do look much stronger with Charlie in there, and Asward was threat all night. The concern if you can have one when sitting on 4pts from 2 matches is that our fowards are not getting in on the act of scoring.
Salford looking for their 1st win and Ebbsfleet on Tuesday will prove sterner tests, 8pts in a weeks time would be nice..

Proper physical battle. Very little in the game but overall we just about edged it. Dan Wishart probably had the best chances of the game but his first touch let him down a little and/or didn’t trust his right foot. Very encouraging defensively. 2 big sides and they didn’t look much like scoring from set pieces (nor did we). Bodes well. Hoping first of many clean sheets this season. My MOM was Kenny Davis.

thought that we toughed it out well, although a few nervous minutes at the end.
a pity we couldn't have got that second goal.
very important win though as our fixtures look really hard this month.

Last night really proved the old adage, you can only play what's put in front of you. It's always hard to play attractive, free-flowing football against an ungainly, disjointed opposition content to lump long balls into the air at any given opportunity, but I was especially encouraged by our wing play, and the pace of our relentless counterattacks.
Even though the much-deserved second goal never came for us, it wasn't for want of trying, and there was never a time in the game when our slender lead looked in jeopardy. Jamie Collins was infallible as ever from the spot in the first half, and Bolarinwa and Wishart threatened throughout the game, as did Taylor when he came on in the second. I also thought Drinan looked lively when he came on late in the second, and the Eastleigh defence were certainly struggling to contain him.
Early doors, but unbeaten in two games and moneybags Salford yet to see their first win is an encouraging start to the season. Any kind of result this Saturday against rich opposition yet to gel will undoubtedly be a massive morale boost.
EDIT: The man of the match award went to Charlie Clough. I find that very hard to disagree with. He was great.

When Eastleigh left GGL last season after a 2-0 defeat, Richard Hill stepped down and Andy Hessenthaler took over. Based on last night not as much has changed with regards their approach. It was almost a carbon copy of last season's fixture, except for the final score.
A physical battle with the opponents playing little football and restricting U's in that sense too. Sutton did try though and as a result made the better openings. Once again it was Tom B's speed and strength that won the foul that was to provide the goal. I had a brilliant view of the incident. Tom got in front of Hare and the Eastleigh defender put in an inadvisable challenge that was always going to only have one outcome. Skip stepped up for the second match running to coolly dispatch and as far as goal scoring was concerned that was it.
If U's were the better side in the first half, Eastleigh had more possession in the second but they did precious little with it and it was Sutton who created the better opportunities.
The match was littered with free-kicks with three visiting players cautioned for robust challenges and there were plenty others that could have warranted similar action but this was Rocky refereeing (although this was on of his better performances) and we should know by now what we're going to get.
A solid performance with the defence coping well -not sure Jamie B had a serious shot to save - and the result just about right.
Reading some of the Eastleigh comments on their forum you just have to laugh at them. Once again the 3G comes under scrutiny but better that than the bog we'll end up playing on come January in the return. Ross L is accused of fouling all the time when all he did was have a protracted battle with his marker all night such is the c/f-c/h's plight throughout football history. Sutton put in loads of naughty challenges. Really? Have a look at your own team guys and girls.
Last night's gate was 200 down on the fixture last season although that was played on a Saturday and not in the holiday period, so not a bad effort. Certainly Eastleigh brought fewer than the in previous seasons, no doubt the end of free-travel putting some off and their younger element were far better than the lot we had to put up with two years ago.
Salford next. Will be very interesting.
