Harold Wilson once said a week is a long time in politics. Well in football, four days can seem like an eternity.
Just four days after a debilitating 4-0 drubbing at home to Borehamwood, the U’s showed considerable resilience and strength of character with our best performance at Gander Green Lane of the season so far.
With a reconstituted line-up that saw the return of Captain Fantastic to the squad and starts to Aswad Thomas at left back, Wayne Brown in central midfield and Jonah Ayunga upfront, within minutes of the opening whistle it was apparent this was nothing like the team that fared so badly on Tuesday.
As the swirling rain saw the terraces rammed, I had the advantage of a sweet spot at the barrier clad in my waterproofs. As befits the Welsh stereotype, the away fans were in fine voice, with an impressive turnout of 380.
There was none of the flooding of our left flank which so besieged our beleaguered defence on Tuesday, and Aswad Thomas held his position very well, with Nicky Bailey drifting over to provide excellent defensive cover from midfield whenever required.
Although it initially appeared that we were playing a 4-4-2 with Wright and Ayunga upfront, Ayunga played a very wide position on the far left, and with Cadogan burning up and down the right flank in reality it was more of a 4-5-1, and proved very effective indeed.
That early pressure on the flanks combined with a strong spine forced Wrexham into a rash challenge at the back, earning us an early penalty around the 12th minute. There was no doubt about JC’s assured finish from the spot and we were well and truly on the front foot from thereon in.
Ayunga created havoc out wide on the left, totally burning their right back for pace, and their number 11 was all over him. The referee spotted this very early on in the game and gave him a warning. I’m not used to that kind of efficient officiating in our matches!
Dale Bennett was so assured at right back, pulling off a succession of dummies and mesmerising Cruyff turns that ensured our dominance on that side of the pitch, as a complement to Aswad and Jonah’s sterling work on the left.
Bailey nearly scored from a downward header in about the 22nd minute, by which point in time Tuesday’s game was a rapidly receding bad dream.
At around 30 minutes in, an excellent Clough header from a pinpoint cross resulted in a disallowed goal. I didn’t see anything wrong with it, but I defer to those with better eyesight than me who seemed confident it was offside.
Just minutes later, another great header from a lethal cross saw Kieran Cadogan put us 2-0 up in the first half, the first time this season that we’ve gone two up in the opening 45 minutes, and a really positive sign of forward progression.
Dale Bennett continued to showboat on the right flank, and on the left Ayunga beat three Wrexham defenders for pace, shooting wide of the far post.
The Wrexham players clearly smelled danger, because just two minutes later a heavy, rash challenge on Ayunga resulted in a straight red for their number seven, leaving our visitors with a mountain to climb. They simply had no answer to Ayunga’s skill.
The Wrexham fans made their disapproval known with a chorus of boos at the half-time whistle, and in stark contrast I could not have been any happier with our first half performance. Unless of course that headed goal of Cloughie’s had been allowed...
The second half witnessed a similar display of dominance in all areas of the field, and relatively early on, a laser guided bullet of a cross from Bennett on the right flank was met with the head of Eastmond to make it 3-0, more than making up for the one which got away on Tuesday.
Although Wrexham repeatedly attempted to break on the counter, they were simply accorded no way through, with the channels efficiently blocked on the flanks by Thomas and Bennett, and in the centre.
There could easily have been more goals for us thereafter, with Nicky Bailey having a driving shot from just outside the D that was well parried by their keeper, and arguably the best chance of all, a point blank blast from Aaron Drinan kept out by a reflexive save which their keeper could have known very little about.
Nicky Bailey had another driving shot from an acute angle very late on, which went wide, earning a rather cheeky “What the f- hell is that” chant from the Sutton faithful behind the goalmouth. At 3-0 up with seconds to go, there’s nothing wrong with a bit of jovial banter.
And so it was that we put the team from Wales to the sword, thereby depriving them from going top of the table, an accolade which instead deservedly fell to Leyton Orient, after dispatching Harrogate Town by the same scoreline as us. And so the ever revolving Game of Thrones at the top of the table continues...
Like I say, our best performance at home so far, and a real testament to the quality of our players, coaching staff and management to be so assured after that game against some team from north of London many many moons ago.... and against a side with a defence so parsimonious they only conceded 5 goals in their preceding 11 games. Wow.
Licking my lips for our home clash vs. bottom of the table Dover on Tuesday. Just four points off the top now. The only way is up!

I bloody love Jonah. A rough diamond that has so much potential. Seeing him skip past players is a pleasure to watch.
Also my first experience of Wrexham fans. Very nice bunch from the dozen or so that I spoke to, good luck to them (just not at our expense!).

I thought he was our best player in a relatively low-key preseason, and if he continues putting in performances of today's calibre, he'll be my favourite player in the squad full stop.

Performance of the season so far without question. We were so up for it today. Great to have JC back but i think more for me, Mr Bailey was masterful. Add to that I think Aswads best game in a united shirt so far, everyone playing with great energy and getting the tactics spot on.
Their keeper made two amazing saves and could have quite easily been 5 today and wouldn't have flattered us. And this is against a side who had let in 5 goals in ALL their previous league games.

Unable to to make the game today, but absolutely delighted with that fantastic result. Very well done to everybody. It sounds like the players were determined to make amends for Tuesday.

A nice counterpoint to Tuesday's result. I doubt if anybody would have predicted 3-0 to Sutton. Wrexham started on the front foot but didn't manage an early breakthrough, and ultimately contributed to their own downfall with the concession of the penalty for the opening goal and then the red card. That shouldn't detract from a fine performance by the Sutton players, who gradually grew into the game, and in the end might be disappointed not to have won by an even greater margin. The match even included a real collector's item, a headed goal from Craig Eastmond.
In a tight and competitive division, and having now played seven of the other eleven top-half sides, we should be well pleased with seventh place.

Who was that team in the yellow , seriously played well today much more football being played used the space of the pitch well, full backs gave us width and the centre mids found them calmly was definetly our main threat, wrighty worked his socks off up top to and had some lovely touches and kept possession nicely while defending from the front. JC, Bennett, Cadogan all quality along with a good few others. Well done great response to the horror show on Tuesday.

JONAH HAS A LIKING FOR WALES. Other than that pun there is nothing I can add to the eloquent tributes already posted. This was a marvellous bounce-back against the league’s meanest defence. Though Wrexham’s performance today did beg the question of how many goals they prevent by pulling opponents back at corners, or violent conduct against the man in possession. Referee Dale spotted both today and Sutton were deservedly ahead from the spot before Luke Summerfield – in the immortal words of the late Eddy Wareing – was given ‘the order of the aayaayrrly bath’. One of the joys of a Sutton game with incidents is seeing how big a hash Football Webpages can make of their report. They excelled themselves today. Of course, FWP must get their information from somewhere, and if I can ever catch up with Pat Carr as she dashes about the club I will ask her if she is running a disinformation service that Russia Today would envy. I had better be quick. GCHQ are recruiting, one hears. Alternatively – maybe Pat is in on this plot. Our second goal according to FWP was not scored by KC as announced. In room 101 at the BBC Sol had found the entire make-up team from the Black and White Minstrel Show. Languishing victims of PC, but keen to show off their speed and skill they joined the plot at GGL. First disguising themselves as white inflatable footballers they lurked behind the home dugout, Then - with the speed of F1 wheel-changers - they stripped Jamie Butler (who was half way upfield as usual) of his goalkeeping togs, blacked him up from head to knees and sent him out in a yellow 11 shirt to poke the ball with his studs past his opposite number in the Wrexham goal. The make-up team even found time to reverse the whole process and have Jamie, wearing the 26 Jersey in his own goal by the time Wrexham kicked off. Aswad Thomas, with the aid of some lightening toner from the make up crew, also managed to pass for Craig Eastmond as he headed our third from close range. So that is how it is done. Had you and Tony Dolbear fooled Eh?

Deliveries into there box was also superb today, very little failed to beat the first man and it seemed every one whether from a set play or open play happened to go into the danger area.

Today vs Tuesday just shows how tight this league is, if you are not on it you walk away with nowt. Today no question we were on it from the off, and Wrexham were restricted to a couple of half chance sniffs only for the entire match. In the end 3-0 probably flatters Wrexham, with one ruled out (correctly) and 2 fantastic saves from their keeper keeping the score respectable. Really important to see JC and Bailey back in the side, the latter was in the mix for just about every challenge, and showed what we had been missing. Great to see TB back, Jonah is one to watch, and Keiron was top drawer, everyone was as Dos would say 'On it' I thought we were fortunate with the penalty, which I think was for holding, but then they had been warned prior to the corner by the ref. I thought the Red card was harsh, but then it makes a change fro it not being one of ours. So now on to Banana Skin Athletic on Tuesday night, we have a terrible record against bottom clubs at the lane on Tuesdays - In fact we are odds on to lose, if we are not 'ON IT' And that cross for our 2nd today was one of the best I have seen us deliver in a long while, you could see the fear on the Wrexham faces as it came it

Below is an extract from the Wrexham forum pre yesterday’s game.. What a message of intent they sent out to Harrogate eh?!
So Sutton where having an OK-ish season till last night and then thumped by Borehamwood - and we thumped B'wood 3-0
Given Sutton will be tired, demoralised, and we are on a high after last weekend how many do you think we can get.
This will not only boost GD but send a message of intent to Harrogate
They also play Orient before us so top of the table may be very different over the next two games.

OLLIEB: that comparison of we beat X by 3-0 and they beat Y by 4-0 so we should win 7-0 is the most idiotic comparison you can ever make. God bless that Wrexham supporter. We were much better than them in every department yesterday. Enjoy your Sunday.

Something that hasn't been mentioned is that Craig Eastmond was able to get forward more, due to the hardworking Brown & Bailey. I have long believed that he could be the midfielder to add a lot of goals from that position and we always look more dangerous when he takes advanced positions.
