Apparently both our disallowed goals for offside were onside!

Once again, a trip to Holker Street is laced with controversy. Our injury-ravaged side were 2-0 down at the interval, both goals coming from attacks down our right flank. A second-half fightback saw two Sutton goals disallowed and our manager cautioned. Aswad grabbed a consolation goal in stoppage time. There was a confrontation on the pitch after the final whistle, with one of our players (Dale Bennett, I think) having to be restrained.

BBC Radio Cumbria reckoned we were hard done by for the two disallowed 'goals'. How can a match official spend the best part of two minutes debating a decision? That said, suddenly we're short of key players.

Apparently both our disallowed goals for offside were onside! I am sure SUFCtv won't say this officially, but I understand that the Barrow video guys have confirmed that both goals should have stood, as neither were offside - they say the final score should have been 3-2 to Sutton. A very angry Sutton team and management on their way back tonight so I understand.

We await sight of the video footage with interest! But if it does indeed show both our disallowed goals to have been legit then, as with the skewed award of yellow cards last weekend, there's little that the club can do about it. We can only hope that the sense of injustice spurs the players on in their next encounter.
I actually thought that Mr Hart (not a ref's name I recognised) had a decent enough first half, generally letting the game flow, but then lost it in the second.
Today's result leaves us 9th. But it was only our third defeat in the sixteen games we've played in just over two months. With near enough a third of our league programme now complete, to be outside a play-off place only on goal difference is no mean achievement. We now have a three-week break from the league, a window in which to get some of our injured players back to fitness, while we savour the diversion of the Irn-Bru and FA Cups.

After at least 3 minutes of deliberation between the referee and lineman, they come up with the goal being disallowed, and I have no idea what for. Their goalkeeper had his arm out and then decided to just fall over when we scored. The referee had no idea what had happened, and that was pretty much how he referred the whole game. We were poor in the first half and just lump aimless balls to no one. 2nd half wasn't much better, and you can see we missed the solidly of Collins, along with Eastmond, and Bailey. I must admit Ayunga does excite me, and he has the talent to go forward. Onwards and upwards.

For anyone wanting to know the value of JC on the pitch:
16 matches played this season = 1440 mins
As close as I can get is :
Time played with JC = 783mins / Goals conceded = 7 ( 1 goal per 112mins) Time without JC = 657mins / Goals conceded = 10 ( 1 goal per 66 mins)
I was quite staggered when I worked this out, I did not realize it would be nearly 2 - 1..
We don't call him CAPTAIN FANTASTIC for nothing !!

Well i found that an absolute bizarre game to watch. Some poor defending at the start from Sutton and i feared the worst with no real threat from us up to half time & 2-0 down. Second half we appeared to score a very scrambled goal only to have it ruled out by the ref after consulting his linesman.Barrow seemed to be very suspect at corners and once again we found the net through our new attacking genius Aswad Thomas only to have it ruled out again by an offside flag for no apparent reason!
Then Jonah missed an open goal after the ball deflected to him. Further Sutton pressure including a header from a corner by Jamie Butler ended up with Aswad again finding the net without the linesmans flag raised. Game on but unfortunately not enough time left for justice to be done. How we could have done with VAR on Saturday .

Barrow. The blot on an otherwise beautiful landscape. Certainly doesn't appear to provide for happy folk if the home crowd is anything to go for. To be fair, they are consistent as they were the same last year. One up, thanks to a fine strike by Hindle after just two minutes the home fans began shortly after. Sutton players couldn't go near their precious commodities on the pitch, in particular their no 20 whose inability to stay upright was a feature of the match, even when he was having a free run towards goal he still managed to end up on the deck. Bambi on ice.
For the first 15 mins the ref tend to rise above the home challenge and was greeted by an ironic cheer when Barrow did get a decision in their favour. And from then on he slowly lost it. Particularly annoyed with Jonah's yellow, especially as he had been brought down earlier after getting past his opponent - no yellow for him though, Quel supris.
Barrow was the better side for the first half. They had a strong diagonal breeze on their backs and used it to play long balls to the right flank. However, it was down their left where both goals came as U's failed to pick up what was a spare man and the second duly arrived with Dale B outnumbered.
Barrow only became a threat in the second half late on when Jamie B made an excellent double intervention and they hit the post (a glaring miss tbh). Prior to that the shenanigans were all up the other end. Two linesman decisions of highly debatable competence. The first took a good two minutes to sort out. Goal awarded, Cloughie prodding home with the 'keeper prostrate. The injury he feigned was a disgrace. Contact minimal. Barrow players complaining and eventually goal disallowed for an apparent offside. During their discussions, both officials allowed a third party to be in their faces, namely the home skipper. At one point it looked if he was looking for a bit of tonsil tickling such was his proximity to them. How are they meant to arrive at the correct decision with such interference is beyond me. It was weak and poor and as has been since apparently disclosed, incorrect.
The second was even worse. Not one Sutton player strayed offside at the corner but up when the flag again after Aswad (who had a very good game alongside Cloughie) had applied the finish.
So to add to Messrs Brook and Kaye (Truro at home three years back) we can now add Mr Glen Hart and his assistant to the "name and shame them" hall of fame. Inept, weak and a threat to the integrity of their office in football. Is it any wonder that managers, players and fans lose their rags when having to put up with this level of incompetence? Christ knows what the assessor made of it but no doubt the Gentlemans' Club will close ranks as usual.
The Barrow manager said afterwards that they deserved the rub of the green. So your 'keeper cheating by feigning injury and your players bullying weak officials is "the rub of the green" is it? Wow, you must have been so hard done by in the past that two perfectly good goals being rubbed out for no reason other than complete ineptness is deserved. What a load of bollocks.
U's were finally permitted a goal when Aswad again popped up to net but by then the match and result was as good as over. The lads had a real good go in the second half and considering the team was without four from last Saturday's starting eleven it showed that the squad has decent strength in depth. They showed spirit too keeping going even after the huge sense of injustice they must have felt. Jonah twice hit the woodwork. The first a powerful effort deflected onto the bar, the second he probably should have scored. But U's good luck did not travel with them yesterday.
Glen Hart will no doubt be running around somewhere next week destroying another football match that people have payed good money to watch. So too will be the cretin with the flag. The FA's Respect scheme will never work while it continues to promote ineptness to levels where they should have no right to be. Respect is earned not handed out like a free ticket to a Garden Fete raffle.
As for their 'keeper, a warm welcome will no doubt be proffered should he turn up at GGL late in the season.
And to the Barrow fans, cheer up, at least we U's fans had something proper to moan about and you do have the Lake District for a back yard.
Onto Dublin (if AB let's me in) and a chance to enjoy a match without the pressure of league points or FA Cup money being up for grabs.
