Lost 1-0, lots of promise individually and as a team. Quite impressive. Lacked a cutting edge against two savvy centre backs.

The Unimportant Cup is over for another season then.
Some people obviously think differently but as previously mentioned I don't think this competition is particularly high on the agenda.
The one thing that it does do is give players a chance and a full game that we wouldn't normally see.

Decent first half. Our academy team attacked with pace and skill, but had to contend with physically more robust opponents. The game's only goal, just before half-time, was an impressive long-range strike from Chertsey's Dave Taylor.
The Sutton attack faded a bit in the second half, our keeper Christian Mbeta making a superb one-handed save, and Chertsey almost adding a second with a shot that came down off the bar.

I actually think now we are using the competition as a academy fixture, the SSC becomes of more use than it has been for years. Its really good to get the youngsters involved with senior football and come up against experienced big defenders who know their trade. I am a reformed SSC critic

It was men against young men tonight. The weight advantage always tells and our #9 also had to concede several inches in height to the Chertsey back line so he won no aerial challenges. On a perfectly flat pitch Sutton's youngsters played nearly all the football in the first period, so it was against the run of play in the 32nd minute that Dave Taylor scored with Chertsey's only shot of the half. But what a shot - from around 24 yards and dipping one inch under the bar.
In the second half Chertsey had worked out U's shortcomings. These were running in straight lines parallel to the touchline, nobody made diagonal runs with the ball to vary the angle for a pass forward. Also despite the very vocal Chertsey skipper driving his defenders up to squeeze the play and hold a high line - Sutton never lofted the ball over the top for a runner coming from deep. Perhaps Sutton didn't fancy themselves in the sprint. I was surprised how quick Chertsey were, it is no wonder they are top of the Combined Counties League where generally the players are slower.
Apart from Mason and Lema who have been offered contracts - the young player who impresses me as an attacking midfield is Ezra Ikebuasi.

Top of the CCL and into the last 16 of the FA Vase (albeit a tough looking trip to Greater Manchester in a competition where home advantage counts for a great deal). I'd expect to see them competing in the pyramid next year, probably with local derbies against Staines, who really look as if they've fallen off a cliff this season.

At h-t a Chertsey fan said that I must be surprised that we were 1-0 down. I replied that this is our Academy squad. One wonders what some of these guys think an u21 team should achieve against an experienced team? Just look at the FL Trophy or the Irn Bru Cup to see how the youngsters generally do against more experienced players.
The above should not detract from the efforts of Marvin's boys last night. The screamer of a goal that won the tie was the home team's only effort on goal during the whole of the 1st half as U's were by far the better side but a lack of composure when it mattered proved the difference.
Chertsey's squad has a large ex-Hendon element to it - not surprising with Dave Anderson as their manager - so having seen those names in the programme I expected them to be decent and it is no surprise that they are having such a great season.
The pitch looked ok but there was plenty of bobbles but I thought the match was decent and it was good to see the young lads showing a lot of confidence and spirit. Marvin's academy set up has come a long way since it was started and as we have seen with Brad Pearce, bringing through some exciting prospects.
Good to see that the standard of refereeing has changed little in this competition. The ref's use of his cards was an utter joke last night. How their no 6 didn't pick up a card is beyond me.
So the SSC challenge ends leaving the Trophy left as far as cup interest goes. Onto Spennymoor for a tough looking tie; let's hope for a repeat of 1974 - on the pitch, not the terraces.

Not all the locals were friendly and being the 1970's yobbish behaviour at football was the fashion.
They didn't take to being 1 0 down at ht. During the second half some guy was just stopped from throwing a bucket of water over my mother.
After the game a guy put a brick through a coach window. It was a local coach as Sutton had flown up to the match.
Fortunately, the supporters' coach was intact.

Travelling up on Saturday on the supporters coach - hopefully no flying bricks when we leave heading into the 3rd rd. They (Spennymoor) won last night should be a good game. Hope you’re well Mark.

Sutton Common Rovers also looking good in CCL and would love to see them play Staines to get revenge for Ryman Play Off semi final in (I think) 2008. Also good luch Chertsey in Vase.
