Here's hoping Hartlepool quack under pressure so delboy can break his duck. I won't be at the game as I've been egged into playing an all day music festival, but I will be peking at the result. Let's hope you don't end up with the bill.

All right Trev et al, from now on I'm starting a match day puns thread. In the non-football (word association etc) part of the forum. See you there!

I wondered how this thread had become so lengthy, prior to kick off... Au contraire, it became lengthy after markf kicked off... Don't try to suck me in, son!

What I would like is someone starting a thread without a motive to change their fortune and then not state the bleeding obvious in their other sentence. Tbh, unless there is some actual news relevant to the fixture I have never seen the point of a Friday match thread, especially at home. Just full of predictions not always based on good evidence or and even worse, expectations. Might make me appear a miserable git (I wear that as a badge) but I don't particularly care. As for the puns. Aaaargh. Please leave them to Tim.That’s a timely remark, mark.

These days things change so quickly: The EU has drawn a border down the Irish Sea and yesterday various MPs have extended the writ of the Westminster parliament to a few of our nearer tax havens, ahem Crown Dependencies. Last Summer GGL hosted a number of nations I never knew existed - including one in Yorkshire! So I suppose British West Hartlepool has recently declared UDI.

Formerly of Hull but most recently of Waterford.

Not sure there was a Yorkshire team, assuming you refer to the splendid CONIFA competition, which was great fun. The 2019 competition is being held in Artsakh (where?) and the reserve team in case one of the others pulls out, is Kernow, which we called Cornwall when I was a lad.

Ok, reverting to the football for a moment. In two matches where U's have only been able to field two recognised midfield players, we have not looked good. Too many guns not enough bullets is a common problem with a team overloaded with forwards. Asking a forward to play in midfield rarely works at any level. If U's face the same problem today then the solution not yet tried is to play 4-2-4, the essential tactic being to man-mark each of the opponents back four to prevent their keeper rolling the ball out and prevent them passing laterally along the back line. Sutton's defence is comfortable against long balls in the air, so that side-effect will play to our strengths. Despite that option, a 3rd recognised midfielder would be better.

We can expect goals to be in short supply this afternoon. Since the two sides shared five goals up in County Durham in late October, each has played 22 times (in NL, FAC and FAT). Hartlepool have managed to score more than once in only four of those games (although that run did include a 4-0 romp at fast-fading Boreham Wood a fortnight ago). Sutton have scored twice in six matches, but in every other have managed either one goal or none.

Unusually the defence were poor today. Should have been able to see out a two goal lead. We need this poor run of form to end soon otherwise we will not make play offs.

It was all change at the Lane today in a thoroughly entertaining and open match played in a good spirit. Back to 3 midfielders Harry, Kenny and Craig. This greatly improved the service to the attack where Deacon and Touré did look like a decent partnership. Two problem areas fixed then, but - this being Sutton - the until now solid defence took the afternoon off. To complete the break from the norm, Referee Paul Howard had an excellent game. Hartlepool served notice of intent being the first team this season to win the toss and switch ends, then they pressed high, forcing our defence into all sorts of errors. Skip was caught twice dithering on the ball and the others rushed into giving the ball away. Though we came in at half time with a 1-0 lead, Hartlepool were only prevented from scoring by some wild shooting, and they had the ball crossing our goalmouth needing only a tap in. Roarie finished off a slick passing move involving Gime to open the scoring. Sutton seem to be on top early in the second half and Touré decided to shoot anyway when the route was blocked. It worked as a defender’s leg deflected the ball over the excellent Loach’s dive. Pools were still dangerous and their left back Kitching opened a debate in the stands as his lofted shot from a narrow angle arked over Worner and inside his left post. Was that a miss-hit cross or did he mean it? I think he meant it. 2-1. An even narrower angle on the other flank was where the equaliser came from. I may be doing Ross a dis-service, but the shot seemed to squeeze between him and the post where there shouldn’t have been a gap. One for the highlights to confirm. Still time for U’s to force two brilliant saves from Loach whose heroics earned Hartlepool a deserved point. Slightly disappointing not to win after leading, but the return of key players made the starting eleven look a good squad who should soon be bagging the wins.
