Well we made hard work of that. An important victory that should have been more emphatic that it was. Aveley were a pretty poor side, and their first significant challenge came after they scored a penalty. We could have won this by a bigger margain, but to be honest, with our goal difference being the way it is now, I'd take winning by a single goal everytime.
We started brightly and it was attack from the off, with Dundo being involved in every significant move we had. We still didn't take our chances though and ended up 1 down at the break, although at that point I thought there was no fear of Aveley getting a second. 2nd half started with us cancelling out with a penalty of our own, just about dispached by Dundo and we were on our way. Again apart from scrambles, Aveley never really threatened as showed why they are in fear of the drop - for a team who did so well and their heart was ripped out of them close season, I can see why this year is such a struggle for them. Staying up will be a real achievement.
Back to us now, apart from a couple of silly bookings delivered by our friendly man in black Mr Crouch (who bearing in mind his previous form, I thought didn't have an awful game), we did what we needed to do. Just. I'm hoping that the more accomplished sides in the division that we are going to face in the next few weeks will bring out a better all round performance.
MoM for me - NEARLY Dundo, but I have to agree with the grounds choice today, Simon Downer. Not only did what he was being paid to do at right back, but made some cracking runs up the wing too and causing havoc wherever he went.
Apart from Bury, who were never going to lose at Croydon in front of a whopping 79 people, other results went our way too.
Next up _ Cray Wanderers - the first of some very testing games in February. A good set of results in that month and we can seriously start thinking about winning this league

Agree with Andy K. Scrivs had nothing to do in the first half until he picked the ball out of the net on 44 mins. He did brilliantly a minute late to save a one on one that looked suspiciously offside. We managed to miss a whole host of chances with some desperate but effective defending from Aveley. They cleared the ball of the line at least 3 times in the first half.
I thought Forbes was Jolly in disguise today (and that is in no way a criticism). Things just didn't drop for him.
We weren't anywhere near our best but with the games coming up we're going to have to be.
Pity Lowestoft got a late equaliser but they still dropped 2 points and the majority of results went our way.

For once, Mr Crouch did U's a favour in awarding us a ridiculous penalty. Still, the amount of cast-iron ones we've had turned down this season, it made a nice change.
Aveley only had a couple of decent chancs in the game both in the last minute of the first half. The first was the penalty - message to U's defenders, please keep your arms down in the box; that's the third hand ball we've given away this season - & then when Timu broke through but was thwarted brilliantly by Scrivs.
We started both halves well & got the penalty before Sam Page met a wonderful Darren Ebsworth flag kick.
U's deserved the three points, although Aveley looked lively at times, but no doubt the visitors will have much to say about that penalty.
U's will need to up it a gear for the next few weeks as the fixture list does not come much tougher than it reads in February.
A very good point for Lowestoft at Tonbridge after being behind.

We got our 2 wins and the 6pts we needed, scored 7 and conceded 1 in the process and we always knew today was going to be a bit more difficult. Aveley did not really threaten all afternoon and the only surprise was that we did not score more especially in the 1st half when we were completely dominant. Our delivery or rather Ebo's delivery was first class and had the Aveley defence in all sorts of trouble and it was fitting that Sam Page took advantage of one to win the game.
The penalty was nailed on, you cannot have your arm raised that high, my surprise there was that Kev didn't save it, it does normally :-)
The chance they had on HT which bought the save from Kev would have been a travesty if they had scored, I was level with play on my way round and there was 2 Aveley players well offside, with the guy who got the ball 5 yards beyond the defender. Was one of the biggest distance offsides I have seen not given for ages it was so obvious.
As said above the penalty we got was cheap but they even themselves out, we could have had one in the 1st half for handball.
MOTM for me was Dundo, BWG was in good chipper today and did offer to play on one leg and could be back next week :-)
Cray next week and we need to keep a couple of ex U's quiet to get a result there.

Firstly i thought the ref was apalling. He missed every push, nearly every hand ball and together with the linesman oposite the stand i thought they were a pair of clowns. The linesman missed a clear push on Ebbsworth just before the cross that got the penalty. We just about did enough to win but didn't we miss BWG. Perhaps Dos can explain why Dundo took the penalty instead of Forbes. It wasn't the best!
