I thought we should have had a penalty late in the second half when Craig did what Craig does and stayed on his feet after having his ankle tapped - This resulted in him being off balance for his final shot.

The penalty shout in the 1st half the ref had a clear view from 10 yards so I guess he must have been right!
Their pen was interesting as the lino who was 10 yards away gave a corner. The ref who was 25 yards away overruled. It was from point blank range but you can't raise your arms. Interestingly one of their attackers raised his arms in our penalty area near the end of the game (admittedly not as high) and the ref didn't give us a free kick.
Just change the rules to make any handball a free kick/pen.
The laws of the game have been ridiculous in this respect for a while as it had to be deliberate handball which of course yesterday it wasn't as he was protecting himself. Deliberate handball is when someone stops the ball on the line etc. A ball kicked at them is not deliberate.

Clearly in the minority of 1 on penalty award! The law states it has to be deliberate. As a player id feel hard done by if the ball was smashed at me from less than a yard. What do you want players to do, waddle around with their arms glued to their sides? There were a couple of times in the 1st half when they handled in the box, no pen I assume because of no intent to handle?

Penalty decisions aside, I thought we played well yesterday overall.
Not the best opposition we will face perhaps but it was never going to be a walkover and we played some really nice stuff in patches. Some really nice passing up front with less reliance on the long ball than in some games recently.
Downer was superb and deserved his MOTM in my opinion, just shading it from Dundo.
A big month coming up now. Come on the U's.

TBH, I said it was a pen as soon as it hit Ebbs hands. Thing is he'd shown the guy away from goal and the oppo player just tried to hook it over his shoulder into the box and Darren raised his arms.
In my book, that's an absolute stonewall spot kick. Why are your arms up there unless it's to block the ball? You've got the guy facing away from goal. It's not necessary.
Let's just say I'd have been going mental if we'd not been given summat like that.

If you raise your arms then it can & generally is deemed as deliberate handball. I don't see many people running around with thier arms in the air, unless they are comic characters out of the Beano.

If you look at Paul's photos, 0137 appears that our penalty claim in the first half was use of the stomach not the arm.

Morning good people of Sutton,
Just thought I'd add my twopeneth on what was my first visit to Gander Green Lane.
First of the result and I can't complain, when you went 2 - 1 up I thought we were in for a bashing. Our pen was a pen, no question, I was the bald bloke going mad at the lino until I saw the ref had given it. As for your pen I was up the other end but from there it looked a pen to me and not one I'd moan about.
Just one whinge and that's to call my team poor is a bit rich really. Since Carl has been in charge we have proved a match for most we have played and had we had him and Scott in charge at the start of the season we would have been firmly tucked away in mid-table obscurity.
However, I made a mistake in appointing after Rod Stringer left and that could cost us.Teams such as yourselves are years/miles/streets ahead of us in terms of budget and crowd strength and we are punching well above ourselves trying to compete with you. On Saturday I thought we were excellent in terms of effort and proved that we will give anybody a game although if we have enough games left to save ourselves remains to be seen.
All I'm trying to say is don't get too far ahead of yourselves. With the greatest of respect I hope we don't play each other next year but for the reason that you've got promoted. Dartford and BW have found the next level tough and I wonder if other teams refer to them as '' poor sides '' when perhaps they too are finding their feet at a new level.
Seriously, I wish you good luck in your quest from promotion and look forward to welcoming you to the Field of Dreams later in the season. As for now, it's Hendon tonight for us !
Cheers Graham Gennings Chairman Aveley Football Club.

Agreed, it was a good game and we played a lot better than in most of our recent games.

I hope George comes back and reads these last posts. We have to stop being disrespectful to our opponents who, as George states, have less money than most teams they compete against. I though they were far better than Croydon and their Charlton youngster showed great movement and maturity throughout the game. Aveley made a game of it on Saturday. OK at the start they would have taken a point and until they were 2-1 down it showed but when they gambled in the last 15 minutes we were under the cosh and as usual we did NOT keep the ball. One up with only minutes to play you keep possession and make certain you only cross it when it is a great attacking option. Also NEVER take a long corner with only 2 back. What happens? Keeper launches it to a speedy forward and their midfield breaks quickly and then we are in big trouble. However our team, when on song, is the equal to all in the RPL with their passing and movement on the deck.

As already mentioned, I couldn't believe people were calling Aveley 'poor' after the display Croydon put on at GGL just a couple of days prior!

Yeah they weren't a 'poor' side, limited perhaps but certainly better than Croydon!

Yes I said they were a pretty poor side. Compared to a team like Lowestoft. They certainly were bloody amazing compared to a team like Croydon and Tooting earlier in the season. It's all comparitive. I'll say they were limited, but then a small club with limited resources battling for survival like they are is good to see and I wish them all the best, they've done really well after what happened to them in the summer.
