I genuinely thought that they are called the Preliminary rounds. Or am I mistaken with the extra earlier games? Reason being, how do you call it a qualifying round if the competition is open to all teams and everyone has already qualified? Or am I stupid?

Anyway I may have missed this from elsewhere but is the draw for the 4th Preliminary Round next Monday? Yep normally around 1 or 1:30, the last few years the draw has been broadcasted live on TalkSport - I’m guessing this will be the case on Monday too (it’s still regionalised until the first round).

There is an extra preliminary round right at the beginning of August before the four qualifying rounds.

It's qualification for the competition proper, which starts with the First Round. I suppose the qualifying rounds were originally meant to be a behind the scenes sort of preparation for the big show of the "real" FA Cup. I used to find some of the Premier League fans I worked with had never even heard of the qualifying rounds.

There are actually two preliminary rounds including the extra-prelim before the 1st qualifying round.
An Extra-prelim round is nothing new and it goes back to 1903/04 season although the structure of the competition was different in that there was 5th qual round but only four "proper" rounds including the sf plus the final itself. The fifth and sixth rounds did not appear until 1925/6 season and the 5th qual was dropped.
Sutton played in the Extra-prelim round on a number of occasions, the first in 1912. The club only became a senior club in 1910. I have U's playing Metrogas in that first season as a senior club but cannot find the match in the book of FA Cup results I have. Perhaps the local rag was wrong?

Perhaps the local rag was wrong? That's interesting, Frakey. I have a list of Sutton’s F.A. Cup results myself - something I received from a friend of mine many years ago. There’s no mention of us playing Metrogas in the early days, the first match listed being a 3-1 home defeat to Guards Depot in the 1912/13 Extra Preliminary. There’s one curiosity though: Over the years I’ve made a few amendments/additions to the list and, at some point, I’ve jotted down a 6-0 away defeat to Redhill in season 1911/12. I may well have read that in a Redhill programme sometime, but obviously I’ve never been sure of its accuracy.

The Redhill defeat is listed in the book I have. However, I believed it "doubled up" as a league match as well, something they did back then. I think the Metrogas match may have been a friendly.

It's the 4th Qualifying Round draw tomorrow at 1.30 p.m., live on Talksport 2. Not much by way of Cup shocks in the southern section yesterday. Perhaps Chichester City from the Isthmian South East beating Enfield Town, 4th in the Isthmian Premier, was a bit of a surprise. A creditable draw for Bristol Manor Farm, 0-0 at home to Wealdstone, but the three Step 5 (Level 9) clubs, Tavistock, Abbey Rangers and Hadley, all bit the dust. Full southern results below, with the clubs definitely through in bold: Abbey Rangers 0 Whyteleafe 2 Billericay Town 4 Bath City 2 Blackfield & Langley 1 Dartford 4 Bristol Manor Farm 0 Wealdstone 0 Canvey Island 1 Bowers & Pitsea 1 Chichester City 1 Enfield Town 0 Chippenham Town 3 Slough Town 3 Dulwich Hamlet 3 Eastbourne Borough 0 Haringey Borough 1 Cray Wanderers 0 Havant & Waterlooville 3 Hadley 0 Hayes & Yeading Utd 5 Hendon 4 Kings Langley 3 Corinthian Casuals 0 Kingstonian 1 Weston super Mare 1 Lowestoft Town 1 Carshalton Athletic 2 Maidstone Utd 2 Hitchin Town 1 Maldon & Tiptree 6 Chertsey Town 1 Oxford City 2 Hampton & Richmond Borough 0 Royston Town 2 Beaconsfield Town 1 Salisbury 2 Margate 4 Tooting & Mitcham Utd 0 Poole Town 2 Ware 1 Potters Bar Town 2 Welling United 4 Tavistock 1 Weymouth 4 St Albans City 1

Potential tie against Carshalton then. Could be good!

£18750 for the winners of the 4th QF and even £6250 for the losers.
A home game against weak opposition would be my preference.
Get into the 1st round proper and a possible tv appearance.

Reading this thread is quite interesting. Not sure Wimbledon could ever be described as rivals; we have only met in league football for just one season (won both matches though). The rest was in various cup ties.
Since WWII it has been T&M and later Robins with K's as a local derby but hardlya rivalry to match the first two named. Bromley? Nope, except to our younger fans.
As for the FA Cup draw we have a habit of getting drawn away and if so my preference would be Chichester City. Ok, a banana skin but the cathedral and grounds are lovely as is much of the town centre. More importantly it's 30 mins on the train from me.

Chichester City away would be perfect for me. Unusually I have a Saturday commitment that day, but in Bognor, and I am fairly certain I could arrange a 3 hour "distraction" with no sanction!
Alternatively, from a selfish perspective, a Sunday tie would work. From a less selfish perspective I would rather the club banked some TV money from a more attractive tie in a later round.

If it’s away Dulwich Hamlet would suit me as it was my local in my “knee-high to a grasshopper” days and I haven’t been back since their new ground was built.
