I think Stockport have a very good squad but feel they may have left it too late to get the required number of points to win the league. Not sure if Torquay have turned the corner but after seeing Notts drop points then its neck & neck between those two as now are main challengers. I'd agree with that, but I also wouldn't rule out Maidenhead. They're on a bit of roll at the moment, although it is more than likely they just have too many games to play in a short space of time. EDIT : I've just worked out PPG needed by each club to reach 85 points (See table above), and Del is correct in his assessment that Torquay and Notts are the biggest rivals, as they need less PPG that the other sides. Maidenhead are not that far behind either. Seventeen matches for Maidenhead to squeeze in by the end of May. One or two posters were suggesting that Notts County were unlikely to figure because of the number of fixtures they have to fit in, but if Maidenhead catch us, I shall eat my Sutton United cap with fried onions and English mustard!

Haha, I agree really. With the size of their squad and the resources available to them, it's unlikely for that very reason. Although mathematically they could do it, doesn't mean realistically they will. But I've learnt never write off a team with Alan Devonshire in charge of them. If he was in charge at Notts County, they'd be a lot higher than they are now.

EDIT - added points per games to reach 85 points. For info Sutton need to average out 2.02 PPG to reach 85 points. We're currently on 2.14PPG Heh, did the same pen and paper exercise this morning and concluded that 85 should do it and maybe 82/83 will be enough. Hartlepool would need 9 wins and 2 draws from 11 games. Torquay 11 wins and a draw from 14 games. Stockport 12 wins and 2 draws from 14 games. Notts Co 13 wins from 16 games. Not impossible but those would be exceptional runs at the pointy end of the season. We need 8 wins and a draw from 14 games to hit the 85 mark. Torquay perhaps with the fairest run but have us, Wrexham, Notts Co and Stockport to play. Notts Co have the most games to play with but that will surely turn into a burden given they still have to play Wrexham twice, Hartlepool, Torquay and us.

Of course Stockport play Hartlepool this weekend. It will be very unlikely that the loser can go on and win the league. A draw doesn’t suit either. Interesting game. On balance, I think I'd prefer the Stockport win.

I thought this is worth posting in the Just for fun thread! "Torquay United aim to overhaul rivals Sutton before April showdown"Torquay United manager Gary Johnson has told his team he wants them to be three points ahead of Sutton United by the time the Gulls play the new National League leaders on April 13. Third-placed Torquay went to Maidenhead United yesterday five points behind Sutton who have a game in hand. Sutton were at Chesterfield and have now entered an awful run of away games, while Torquay’s next two are at home, against lowly King’s Lynn Town on Saturday and midtable Solihull Moors next Tuesday. With a question mark hanging over what happens to Dover Athletic, who are refusing to play their games, Torquay could still lose the three points they picked up from the Kent side earlier in the season, while Sutton were still to play them. Full article can be found here.

Torquay are 6 points behind us and by the time we play them we should have 2 games in hand on them (or 1 if Dover are kicked out by then, which I very much doubt they will be). For them to overhaul us they will need to hope we don't get maximum points. Even if we got 6 our of 9 they couldn't do with without improving their GD significantly. As Gareth said, each game at a time, but barring a huge loss of form from us and Torquay being perfect, that's quite a tall order.

If Torquay do not achieve that goal by the time they play us psychologically they have already failed and that would play into our hands.

3 points per breach but presumably there are many more for rest of the season.

Saves the mucking around with pens and paper. Can reserve that for PPG calculations now!
