Here we go then.. 123 years a non-league outfit - Sutton United begin a new era tomorrow afternoon with a historic day beckoning - one I’d imagine tinged with varying emotions amongst our supporters.
Our League Two curtain-raiser sees us travel to Gloucester for what looks a tricky match-up against Forest Green Rovers, a side who competed in the play-offs last season. Of course we’ve had prior battles against this lot - we did the treble over them in the largely disappointing Conference season of 99/00 (quadruple if you include the abandoned midweek game in the first week of the season). More recently we secured a 1-1 draw at theirs in the first midweek of the 2016-17 season.
I’m hearing ticket sales for the Sutton allocation are going well with around 270 sold when I popped down to the club on Wednesday evening - expect that figure to creep over 300.
Pre-season concluded last weekend with a 2-1 victory over Barnet to make it 4 wins out of 6 against a mixed bag of opponents, thankfully preparations for the new season were only partially affected by Covid. It sounds like the new signings have integrated well in the squad and I look forward to seeing them involved as the season goes on.
I wish everyone going a safe trip down to Gloucestershire - the start of perhaps the most wildest adventure this season.
Come on the U’s!!

Really looking forward to the Forest Green Rovers game. For two reasons, first and obvious our first EFL game, what an occasion. Aside from a few London away games I don't go to away games. A moment of mania I am on my way today to Stroud for the game. Leaving Stroud on Monday for Cardiff ahead of our clash with Cardiff City. Second reason is to see FGR up close as since the millionaire take over of the club they are best known for their vegan menu and commitment to playing their part in the face of a climate crisis. Disclosure, I'm not a vegan or a member of the Green Party but I'll be trying out the vegan menu at FGR. As a football club it's interesting what FGR are building, literally, they have a plan to build a stadium made from wood. Of course it shows how a millionaire owner can 'impose' his thinking on the club and shape it in his image. Not ideal but slightly better than that Hollywood Team.

My 2nd closest game of the league season. Looking forward to it immensely. Guess the positions of interest selection wise are 2nd striker (is Wilson fit enough to start?), wide left, midfield partner for Eastmond and right back. We’ll need the whole squad for the season but it looks strong and I’m optimistic. As they are likely to be a play off side at minimum it will be a good marker of the standard.Going to be a decent turn out and trust we will all be loud and proud. Think last time I went there we were behind a goal but looks like the away fans housed elsewhere now.

They were the first side we faced in our historic FA Cup run. I'll be the first to admit I didn't think we'd get past them as it was one of the toughest draws we could have had. Thank goodness for Roarie Deacon's stoppage time winner saving us an extra trip to Gloucestershire (which is of course exactly what happened again two rounds later!)

I'm surprised the team are going there tonight or so it seems on twitter. Two and a half hour hop down the motorway or perhaps a dry run for the long away games coming up.

The team might have a half decent hotel, so a chance for them to as was said, bond and have a nice breakfast in the morning. I have arrived in Stroud, checked into hotel and will check out what Stroud has to offer. Anyone else on here in Stroud for the Friday night before Christmas, sorry the game but it feels like a footballing Christmas eve -)

I see we are in all amber tomorrow. I thought i read we couldn't wear our home kit for away games and was half expecting to wear the new third kit shirt.

I say one of the toughest as we could have been away (although our away record tends to be good). Remarkable that we got to the 5th round without going outside the M25 really! (again, thanks to Mr Deacon)

A historic day for the club but (as has already been noted) because we've played FGR a number of times during the last 25 years, when they were still non-League, the experience will have a whiff of familiarity about it. (Scunthorpe away in a fortnight's time may feel more like a new adventure.) Looks as if there will be a few hundred of us there, doubtless in good voice (and maybe singing in the rain). I shan't be doing a recommended pub for every away game this season as I'm not familiar with all the destinations. But I shall do one for tomorrow. The pub is the George Inn (Newmarket Rd, Nailsworth GL6 0RF). I haven't been here for several years, but it's one of those places that doesn't change much! It's a traditional Cotswold stone pub, overlooking the Newmarket valley, about half-way between the centre of Nailsworth and FGR's ground (up the hill). Expect beers from local breweries such as Uley and Goff's. A good stop for lunch.
