March 7 cannot be allowed to pass without those who were at Merstham in 1981 reliving one of the most bizarre games we've seen. For a bit of background, Merstham were in the Spartan League and so their 1-1 draw at Sutton the previous weekend was something of a shock result, and without their ground having lights we went to Merstham on a wet and miserable afternoon a week later. We suggested the previous week had been an aberration by going five up inside 32 minutes and making it 6-0 just after half time. Then the fun started to the extent that it finished 9-3, with one of Merstham's goals being scored by our former striker Steve Cosham (Lee Wallis was also in their line-up). However the incident when the score was 7-2 is what puts the game further in to the 'bizarre' category, as a Merstham shot past goalkeeper Dave Collyer was rolling wide when an elderly Merstham supporter came on to the pitch and diverted the ball in to the net with a walking stick. Our scorers were Graham Dennis and Mike Cornwell with two each (Mike had been recalled from a loan at Epsom because Micky Joyce, our scorer in the first game, was injured) and one from Larry Pritchard, John Rains, Ian Parsons and Steve Rogers, plus an own goal.

If I am not mixing up my games, the weather had turned more than a bit cold and wet and when Barrie Williams suggested to sub Ray Sunnucks that he might like to get warmed up to come on he was met with a rather forthright refusal !

Barrie obviously got his way because according to my notes Ray set up the eighth goal ''as an extremely reluctant substitute after Tony Rains got a knock''.

A significant one today from 8 March 1986 when we took a major step towards the successful defence of our Isthmian title, and promotion to the Conference, by beating our main challengers Yeovil 3-1 at GGL. Due to a month of snow it was our first league game since 25 January, and Yeovil were top, with Harrow second and us third. Paul McKinnon put us ahead with a penalty, and after John McGinlay had equalised Phil Dawson put us back in front just before half time and Macca made it 3-1 early in the second half. Yeovil missed a late penalty. Their side included Alan Pardew and former Bristol City and Manchester City midfielder Gerry Gow. The crowd was 1,274, our best league gate for several years (Mark might be able to be more specific) and although Yeovil beat us 2-0 at Huish in April in front of a crowd more than four times that, we ended up as champions.
A really quirky thing from this game was that Yeovil's goal stood after referee Alf Rogers had overruled an offside flag, deeming a player not to be interfering with play, and in their next game at Hendon, which, having nothing better to do on a Tuesday I went to, they scored a goal in identical circumstances, with the same referee.
And I was doing my first ever radio report, for Radio Bristol, in the days before we had phones in the press box (and way before mobiles) so every report was done from a phone in the tunnel which meant I couldn't see the game when I was reporting and have still not seen Phil Dawson's goal.

On this day in 2022, Sutton United reached Wembley for the first time since May 1981.
That's the only fact that matters this famous night.
Thank you Matt and Jason and Micky and thank you to Easty and the boys you have made an ageing miserable bastard a very happy man.

Just sneaking in a quick one for 14 March 1979 - our first ever game in the Anglo Italian semi-professional tournament, a 1-1 draw against Juniorcasale (Gavin Fraser scoring). Six weeks later we became the first English winners of the competition.

15th March 1969 Sutton United 4 Whitley Bay 2. Amateur Cup semi-final After the bitter disappointment of seeing Sutton lose to Leytonstone a year earlier I finally had a chance to see my team at Wembley😀 The link below is from the Whitley Bay website. archives.whitleybayfc.co.uk/archives/report.asp?id=2

16th March 2019 saw the end of the era as Sutton beat Gateshead 4-2 at Gander Green Lane in what would be Paul Doswell’s last game as manager. The following week Dos announced he was taking a break for the rest of that season, however he announced his resignation in April 2019.

16 March 1968, Sutton 0 Leytonstone 0, Amateur Cup semi-final at Selhurst Park and the first Sutton match I can remember attending. I've seen some good 0-0 draws over the years; this wasn't one of them.

The following week Dos announced he was taking a break for the rest of that season, however he announced his resignation in April 2019. I was at that game, the third consecutive season I'd seen that fixture with a 3-0 win and a 1-1 draw. Went 2-0 down before Jamie Dobson equalised from the spot. The subsequent video of it behind the goal went viral on YouTube and I was famous for at least 9 seconds. Took three friends with me that day, and what a blast we had. Pity about England v Scotland in the rugby afterwards!
