Meant to post this yesterday, but our first ever relegation (1 May 1991) also happened to be our first televised live game. We lost 5-2 at Kettering, confirming our relegation. It was broadcast live on then British Aerospace TV, which I believe was a cable channel, probably to an audience of 10 people.

On this day in 1980 our attempt to retain the Anglo-Italian Cup failed at the last hurdle. We progressed to the final serenely with home wins over Trirestina (2-0) and Mantova (6-0) [If my memory is not playing tricks, the referee against Mantova also took charge 9 years later against Coventry].
In the final in Italy we again faced Triestina, winners of the Italian pool, in quite an impressive stadium and on one of the windiest nights we have every experienced. Despite the 0-0 scoreline it was a terrific game and the U's played superbly (the game was available live on Italian TV and viewers said it was a much better match than Arsenal v Valencia the previous night in the Cup Winners' Cup Final - also 0-0).
Ultimately we lost on penalties, with the irony that it was our star of the show, Micky Stephens, who failed from the spot. The U's did not let in a goal from open play in the entire tournament.
Time does play tricks with the memory but I fondly recall this as one of the finest Sutton team displays I have ever seen.

13 August 2016.
First away game after promotion to the National League. A stunning 3-1 against eventual champions Lincoln City. It was their biggest league home defeat of the season, and one of only 2.

According to my Dad's 1939 diary (I'm looking back at it because 3rd September will be 85th anniversary of outbreak of WWII) I see that Sutton beat Leyton 6-1 on this date (26th August).

And you should still have the programme for that match Dave.

3 years ago today our first home game as a Football League club (never ever thought I’d see the day), yes galling to lose in that manner to Oldham but a fine occasion. David Ajiboye scored our goal in a 1-2 reverse.

I've got the following memory on Facebook from 5 years ago.
"Sutton out of the FA Cup 5-2 tonight after blowing their chance of a cup run last Saturday."
Who was that to?
