26/3/1981 A goal by Ian “Ted” Parsons was enough to secure a narrow win away to Aylesbury United and put the U’s through to the semi finals of the FA Trophy. The tie had been put back to a Thursday because of the weather and it’s fair to say that some of the locals didn’t take kindly to the result. The game was at their original ground in Turnfurlong Lane. I remember another cup game against Aylesbury United in the 1980s where we secured a narrow win and some of the locals didn't take kindly to the result either! Isn't that the game where Clive Barber got a bottle on the head?

Isn't that the game where Clive Barber got a bottle on the head? I don't know. The 15 year old me had already pegged it over the fence after seeing the Aylesbury fans on mass heading towards us via the pitch!

I Remember that game. It was scheduled for the Monday of that week but was rescheduled to the Thursday. The program has Micky Joyce as number 9 but he was replaced by Ian Parsons.

Yes, he was unwell.
On arrival on the Monday postponement, yes some of us got there, Aylesbury wouldn't let us in the bar, something to do with it being a members' bar.
Joycey had the right hump about that and got us in. I should add he didn't touch a drop and his illness was not related!

On the second day of April 1980 we battled out a nil nil draw away to Cavese in the Anglo Cup. A large group of supporters enjoyed a week in Sorrento for the two group matches.

Two years ago we were less than a minute from winning at Wembley!

On this day in 1986 we travelled to Bishop’s Stortford as we battled through a hectic closing few weeks in search of the Isthmian league title. Our previous four league games had been won 6-0; 1-5; 0-1 and 5-0 so perhaps it shouldn’t have been a surprise that we returned home from Essex with a 6-0 win, but it was more the nature of the way we played. A confident team in total control. Our last league defeat had been away to Bognor, on 19th October.

On this day in 2016 we beat Bishops Stortford 2-0 at GGL, taking us to the top of the National League South, having finally overturned a 15 point deficit vs Ebbsfleet

On this day in 1969 we were at Wembley for the Amateur Cup Final and I know that a surprisingly large number of fans there that day still follow us regularly. We lost 2-1 in something of an upset against North Shields. Better memories from 1986, when we won 2-0 at Worthing in our pursuit of the Isthmian League title.

45 years ago today, 7 intrepid Sutton fans began their long train journey to watch Sutton contest the Anglo Italian Trophy final.
Feels like it was yesterday. Where's that time gone?

And also on this day, we beat Chelmsford 2-0 to lift the National League South trophy for the first time. Let's hope 23rd April 2024 isn't a day we remember for another reason. Update : it wasn't

Twenty years ago today we snatched 2nd place in the final Ryman League table with a 5-0 win at Basingstoke, Tony 'Biggles' Quinton scoring a hat-trick.
The following season we competed in the inaugural Conference South division.

And 38 years ago today we clinched our second successive Isthmian League title with a 2-0 win at home to Kingstonian and earned promotion to what was then the GM Vauxhall Conference (infact it was probably the Gola League at that point but the GMVC by the time we joined it). It was a Thursday night game after we had already played at Croydon on the Monday and at Walthamstow on the Tuesday.

I remember that game very clearly...back in the days when the team was very dominant at Isthmian level. Interesting to think how current managers would react now if asked to play Mon Tues, Thurs paticularly when players were putting in a full days work (as they were at that time!) before taking to the field in the evening.
