Another 2-1 win came at home to Dartford in the NL South on 23 January 2016. I have the scorers as Fitchett and McAllister but I'm not sure how accurate that is. Scorers are correct! This match was Craig Dundas's 400th for us. 🙂

Finally, on 23 January 2021 we comfortably beat Eastleigh 3-0 on the way to our first National League title. Only I hope

The first 23 January match I attended was in 1999. Home to St Albans City in the Isthmian League, we lost 2-3 with Danny Brooker and Andy Riley scoring our goals. Funnily enough we lost by the same scoreline on 23 January 2007 as we visited Egham Town in the Surrey Senior Cup. This time our goals came from Matt Gray (the other one, blah blah) and Warren McBean. In 2010, at home to Tonbridge Angels in the Isthmian League, this time on 23 January we won 2-1. Charlie Taylor got both goals. Another 2-1 win came at home to Dartford in the NL South on 23 January 2016. I have the scorers as Fitchett and McAllister but I'm not sure how accurate that is. Finally, on 23 January 2021 we comfortably beat Eastleigh 3-0 on the way to our first National League title. The scorers were Rob Milsom, David Ajiboye and Craig Eastmond Was this the day of the infamous Egham tea bar disaster?

I wondered if you'd mention that!

I think we won the game on the day of the Egham Tea Bar Disaster. Did we play them twice in the space of 2-3 years, losing on the second occasion?

One I missed from yesterday I believe
23 Jan
Sutton make a trip to Dorking FC, then managed by John Rains, to play a Surrey Senior Cup tie. I think we asked for the tie to be moved due to us going up to Norwich the following Saturday, but the Surrey FA insisted the match be played.
I can't remember the scoreline, but I think it was in the region of a 2-0/3-0 defeat.

Will we ever again see such an array of talent on our pitch at one time ? Just two years ago the answer would probably have been no, but now I think it's a cautious "maybe".

Just two years ago the answer would probably have been no, but now I think it's a cautious "maybe". Well, for that to happen, I reckon we would need to reach the latter stages of the F.A. Cup and draw Man.City, Liverpool or Chelsea. Any earlier than the quarter-finals and those teams wouldn’t play their first team, so I look forward to that happening! Here are the teams from 52 years ago: Sutton Utd: Dave Roffey, Rod Brookes, Denis Clarke, Ted Powell, John Faulkner, Dario Gradi, Mick Mellows, Trevor Bladon, Peter Drabwell, Larry Pritchard, Terry Howard. Leeds Utd: David Harvey, Paul Reaney, Terry Cooper, Billy Bremner, Jack Charlton, Norman Hunter, Peter Lorimer, Allan Clarke, Mick Jones, Johnny Giles, Paul Madeley.

I think we won the game on the day of the Egham Tea Bar Disaster. Did we play them twice in the space of 2-3 years, losing on the second occasion? We did play there twice, yeah. The other one I remember being very cold and this was probably that one. Think the tea bar debacle was the first one which was March 2005. Leeds is obviously the main one today. Here are a few others I've been to. On 24 January 1998 we beat St Albans City 3-1 at GGL in the Isthmian League. Scorers were John Ugbah, Joff Vansittart and Matt Hanlan. 24 January 2004 we travelled to Bishop's Stortford and recorded a 1-1 draw in the Isthmian League with our goal coming from Glenn Boosey. A 0-0 Isthmian League draw at Canvey Island took place on 24 January 2009 We drew 2-2 at Havant and Waterlooville on 24 January 2015 in the Conference South (rare, as we usually seemed to go there in August or September!). Dan Fitchett scored both of those. A more memorable one on 24 January 2017, our FA Trophy replay at home to Worthing where we recorded a 3-2 win. Goals were from Craig McAllister, Dean Beckwith and Adam May.

Some Burns Night football for you.
Sometimes a match will stick in the memory for no obvious reason and for me our 1-1 Isthmian League draw at Chertsey Town on 25 January 1997 is one of those. It may have been the chips from the tea bar, which my friend warned me not to buy and I foolishly ignored her. I don't know what they'd done to them but they were horrendous. Anyway, Barry Laker scored our goal.
On 25 January 2005 we lost 0-3 at home to Woking in some sort of league cup whose name I forget. We conceded nine goals in two games that week!
In sharp contrast, we recorded a fine 5-0 win at home to Croydon Athletic in the Isthmian League on 25 January 2011. Our goals were scored by Darren Ebsworth, Sam Page, Craig Dundas and Andy Forbes; there was also an own goal.
We visited Basingstoke Town on 25 January 2013 where Jamie Taylor scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory.
Our last 25 January match was a 0-0 National League draw at home to Solihull Moors in 2020.

Wasn’t the name of that Conference League cup we played Woking in 2005 the Victor Gladwish Trophy- he was keen on sponsoring lots of Non-League cups and clubs at the time. The trophy was originally named after whichever company owned Hornchurch FC. However that changed when the company went bust (taking Hornchurch with them. Whatever happened to Uncle Urchin?). In the 2004/05 season we were knocked out of the FA Trophy, League Cup and Surrey Senior Cup by the eventual winners of the respective tournaments. If I recall correctly the own goal scored by Croydon Athletic in 2011 was scored by ex-Sutton player Tom Hughes.

It's funny to think now that until May 2021, the Conference League Cup was the highest honour we'd ever won (back in 1991 v Barrow)
