It was also Boreham Wood on 13 February 1999, and showing that as well as false optimism (see 9 February) we have also had moments of false pessimism it was probably our worst league performance of the season, and Boreham Wood won 2-0 with one of the goals scored by former Chelsea and England striker Kerry Dixon. We were fourth in the Isthmian League and it was generally felt that, based on that performance, our championship hopes were pretty remote. We won the next eight on the trot, clinched the title with three games to spare, and finished eleven points clear at the top.

17th February 1968, we beat Slough Town in an Amateur Cup 3rd Round Replay at Gander Green Lane 1-0 with a goal from Dave Hutchins... This was 'my' first match attended.

17 February 1990 is worth a mention. We were at home in the Conference to Darlington, who had been relegated from the Football League the season before and, like Lincoln a couple of years previously, were making a good attempt to bounce straight back - their team included ex Leeds, Nottingham Forest and Scotland defender Frank Gray. They were two points clear at the top coming in to the game (we were 16th), and led 1-0 at half time with the advantage of a very strong wind. We had that on our backs in the second half, dominated the game, and were rewarded when Efan Ekoku equalised nine minutes from time, outjumping the keeper to head in. Two minutes later Carey Anderson (that'll set a few people thinking), starting a game for the fourth time that season, dived to head his first competitive goal for us and give us a rapturously received 2-1 win. The crowd of 1,493 was our biggest of the season in the league and Darlington, as had Lincoln two years earlier despite also being beaten at GGL, went on to win the league.

Recall that afternoon well. We had segregated although there was very few Darlo fans there.
Me and a current member of the management committee broke segregation in the second half and I got a ticking off from our resident pc for doing so.
I had asked one of the other few people behind the goal how long it had taken him to get here.
Five minutes he replied, I live in Collingwood Road!

A particular favourite from my early supporting days was 18 February 1978. Away to Enfield in the London Senior Cup. Readers of Mark's programme articles will know that we had a pretty awful record in the competition, while Enfield were 17 points clear at the top of the table, hadn't lost in the league since the second game of the season, and had done the league double over us with an aggregate score of 10-1. Nevertheless early in the second half Derek Possee, the former Millwall striker who had a brief spell with us, headed in the rebound after a Peter Kemp shot had hit the post, and a superb display from Dave Collyer and his defence, including Paul McKinnon in his then regular position of left back, protected the lead for a notable victory. Showing some inconsistency that season we lost at home to bottom of the table, relegation-bound Bishop's Stortford the following Saturday, and the London Senior Cup hopes were ended in a semi final replay after extra time at Leatherhead. And Enfield won the league by 31 points.

Significant games played on February 20th include a midweek visit to Torquay in 2018 where in a exciting back and forth game, Sutton emerged victorious following a last minute penalty from Jamie Collins to secure a 3-2 win.
February 2021 saw us comfortably dispatch Wealdstone 4-1 at Gander Green Lane.
And I’m not sure if anyone remembers a game we played on this date in 2017. It was an FA Cup tie we were unlucky to lose 2-0 against some plucky outfit called Arsenal, who as far as I can tell faded back into obscurity after their shock win at Gander Green Lane.

And of course who can forget the 2-2 draw at Hemel on this date in 2016 where future Sutton goalkeeper Jamie Butler scored the late equaliser to deny us the win

On this day in 1981 we faced Bedford in the FA Trophy last 16. Earlier in the season we lost disappointingly at Minehead in the FA Trophy. The hosts laid on fish and chips for us afterwards in their clubhouse and Graham Dennis came over to apologise for the display. "We will just have to make up for it in the Trophy and get to Wembley" he said. None of us believed him !
Before the Bedford game we asked Barrie Williams why he had left out Ray Sunnucks (this is where MarkF tells me my old memory is playing up). "Just a hunch", he replied. "If we lose I am an idiot, if we win I am a genius". Afterwards, he simply smiled and said "I guess I got lucky today".

In fact Pressec has corrected me 😁. Ray played and GD was left out. That’s why I’d be an awful witness in a murder trial

I'm surprised Joycey didn't get to him first to remind him who scored one of the goals

Those who were following us in the 1970s still shudder at this one. 22 February 1977. Away to Leyton-Wingate. London Senior Cup. Lost 2-0. Suffice to say that when Mark's programme articles refer to us having a bad record in the London Senior Cup, this is the sort of game he is talking about.

Suffice to say that when Mark's programme articles refer to us having a bad record in the London Senior Cup, this is the sort of game he is talking about. That's certainly one that sticks in my mind. I don't think I've ever been more disappointed in a Sutton team, not only in the performance but, more importantly, in the complete lack of commitment and fight.

God, that was awful that night. In a season that hit a fair few lows, that was probably the lowest.
Not sure if that was Trevor Bladon's last match or if he had decided to retire after the previous Saturday.
I remember that the Hare & Hounds Ground was in a depressing state. Went to walk around the far side and realised they had painted a fence on the perimeter wall to make it look like a four sided ground.

After yesterday's memories we need some cheering up. Is it really a year ago tonight that we were all watching our live streams, wondering why, within seconds of securing a hard-earned 1-1 draw at Dagenham, Dean Bouzanis caught a cross and, rather than hold on to the ball, immediately threw it out to David Ajiboye? About ten seconds later we had the answer, David was clattered in the other penalty area, Harry Beautyman converted his second penalty of the night and we had secured the win that was one of the results Matt and the team say convinced them that they could achieve what they ultimately did.
