Denis Law CBE born 24 February 1940 Happy Birthday to the great man. Happy Birthday indeed. I still fondly remember him playing in the 1966 Surrey Senior Cup final for Redill against us at Sandy Lane when he hit the post.

25 February 2017. After a week that few people will forget in a hurry, Simon Downer ended up in goal at Torquay when Ross Worner was injured. Dean Beckwith's late goal gave us a 3-2 win, Roarie Deacon and Max Biamou also scoring. It was only the second game we'd won away in the league all season, Lincoln being the other in August.

February 25th
Sir Donald George Bradman, (27 August 1908 – 25 February 2001), nicknamed "The Don", was an Australian international cricketer, widely acknowledged as the greatest batsman of all time. Bradman's career Test batting average of 99.94 has been cited as the greatest achievement by any sportsman in any major sport.

I read some, I ignore some. Doesn’t ruin my enjoyment. I am a simpleton though so maybe I should actually be offended.

Whilst I may be classed as a simpleton too, some have inclined as much, maybe the simple solution would be to title this thread as 'On This Day - Sutton United Football Club Only Thread'. And then create another entitled 'On This Day - Anything Else That Happened In The World In Days Gone By'.
Will save any confusion, in my opinion.

I'm sure Billy is capable of creating his own thread in that vein, but I get the impression that would take any of the gratification he gets when he posts.

This day in 1983 (26th Feb), Micky Joyce scored a hat-trick in a 4-1 win at Hitchin Town. He had also scored three times in the previous game, a 3-0 win over Kingstonian in the London Senior Cup. Remarkably John Rains would then score a hat-trick in each of the next two games, away to Windsor & Eton in the Hitachi Cup (w 4-3) and at home to Carshalton (5-0) in the Surrey Senior Cup. Micky would end up with 52 goals that season as the U's rattled in a total of 159 goals (including friendlies), with makeshift centre-forward JR also registering 25 times.

1 March 1989 we won 3-2 away at Cheltenham
1 March 2014 we won 2-0 home to Chelmsford
Can't remember the scorers but I'm sure others can fill that bit in.

The win at Cheltenham was with two goals from Vernon Pratt and one from Paul McKinnon. It ended a run of eight games without a win, beginning with the Surrey Senior Cup tie at Dorking which I think got a mention on the relevant day in January, and was our first away league win of the season.
The Chelmsford win was courtesy of Gavin McCallum and Craig Dundas, and I think that was the Dundo thunderbolt from some 30 yards out that won the goal of the season that season.
If anyone with a longer memory wants to have a Leyton-Wingate type recollection today, 1 March 1982 we were 2-1 up with a minute to go in an FA Trophy replay at Worcester. Just over half an hour later we'd lost 5-2.

That's one to forget Tony ! We played so well and looked set for a good win, looking forward to a chance to get back to Wembley just 12 months after losing there to BS. We fell apart in extra-time, as did our whole season after that. We led the league with a 15-point advantage over Leytonstone & Ilford at one point (although they had games in and) but ended up as runners-up and 8 points adrift.

To get back on a positive note, as we can't actually do one of these this year for February 29, let's remember the Nik Tzanev show at Bromley a couple of years ago.

You want positive? You only need to go back a year to when we nicked that brilliant stoppage time winner against Bromley, 3-2 after we'd already had a late equaliser courtesy of Mr Beautyman I believe Another memorable one for me was a 6-0 thrashing of Woking in the SSC on 2 March 1999.

That Woking game is the only one I can remember where we have benefitted from two own goals by the same player - former Carshalton defender Eddie Saunders, who had scored them both by the 37th minute and was then booked in the 40th.
