"The U's found themselves on the right side of fine margins a lot last year" is a particularly unusual statement, for anyone that actually remembers our results from last season e.g. the season opening 2-1 loss to Forest Green Rovers sealed by their 91st minute winner, our 2-1 loss to Oldham from a 96th minute winner, a 3-2 loss to Rochdale from a 95th minute winner, that 3-2 loss to Newport County from a 93rd minute penalty, a 1-1 draw to Bristol Rovers from an 85th minute penalty etc. From my perspective, in the early games in particular, those fine margins did not go our way. My hope is that, in our second consecutive season at this level, we will be better prepared for those sucker punches in the latter stages of matches... Hope all’s well TREV. Honestly - some football folk - FINE MARGINS. Real Madrid won their 14th European Cup on fine margins. Football is all about fine margins.

I've been covid positive for the last couple of weeks but I finally tested negative today so it looks I have the green light for our season opener on Saturday... provided my scheduled train isn't cancelled on account of the strikes... It'll be interesting to see whether our first few results go our way. We only picked up two 2 points from our first four games last season, having to play three consecutive away games didn't exactly help our cause. Starting at home gives us a great chance to get off to a flying start. If we pick up some wins in those all important early games then we'll have a great springboard for the rest of our season.

Safer to ask here than on Twitter where people are almost foaming at the mouth (not Sutton fans btw other clubs)
I like Gab he is knowledgeable on EFL stuff - plus he admits when he gets it wrong and was one of our biggest supporters last year. So not to take anything away from what he is paid to do (offer opinion and predictions) but why does this matter so much?
Much like the relentless mockery of small clubs away fans, there are no extra points on offer for pre season predictions. To be honest I love seeing all the ones saying we will go down as hopefully will mean teams under estimate us.

Unfortunately no one will under estimate us. They know what they’ll be getting from this Sutton team.

Hi folks,
Gab here.
Totally get why 22nd looks a lazy pundit prediction, and disrespectful to Sutton.
It probably doesn't help that I saw two of your worst performances last year, away at Rochdale and Port Vale, which has probably skewed it a bit.
Slightly concerned that Sutton have neither lots of young talents pushing on, nor lots of players who have got a history of consistently doing well at this level - so it's kind of a case of trusting the dynamics from the last two years (not a bad thing to rely on I guess).
I appreciate that 4-4-2 has worked brilliantly for you on the journey you've been on and all credit to you for that, but it does ask so much of the wide men in terms of being back every time to be part of that 8-man block, but also getting forward every time to support Omar and Donovan.
I'm a bit concerned about the loss of Tanto and David Ajiboye - hopefully Neurfville steps up.
Truthfully, I'm not super-crazy about the signings you've made, though either of them could come good if they buy into the culture that Matt and others have fostered.
I just feel an injury to a Louis John, or a suspension to a Craig Eastmond could hit you really hard in the absence of players who can do similar jobs in the squad.
Take your point about the early season games, though.
Anyway, you've thrived against the odds for most of your existence so I'm sure defying one more doubter won't be a problem! Hope you prove me wrong.
Look forward to making my first visit to GGL next year and seeing Dan, Sarah, Mike, Julian, dirty Barry and the others - you lot were top drawer at Rochdale, offered me a taxi share back to Mancs which I haven't forgotten.
Anyway, best of luck for Saturday and the season ahead.

Thanks for taking the time to come on Gab. I don’t think you have to justify your opinions! Just someone having a say and sticking their neck out. We will always be the underdog in the EFL and hopefully we do prove to being in a better place than you believe.
To be honest I’d take 22nd place as it guarantees an important 3rd season in the EFL, though hoping for better.

A 3rd season in the EFL would be fantastic progress, hopefully allows you to grow a bit more off-the-field. Easy to forget Amber & Chocolates were a part-time club last year!

Very good of you to take the time to post on here Gab. Your stock is certainly rising and your insight into the whole of the EFL is second to none. I learn more about other teams by reading your tweets etc than anywhere else.
It's a game of fine margins as you have stated and we could of easily have finished third had we not conceded late equalisers or winners or if the ref had spotted the hand balls at Bradford (which would have seen them down to 9 men in the first half) and at Swindon right at the death.
Losing Ajiboye was a blow but we probably would have lost him the previous year had we not won the NL. Matt and Jason plan well in advance so I expect everything will be ok. I expect 15th or above for us this year which will be absolutely fine.
Looking forward to seeing you again at some stage this season. Hopefully you can come to a home game. You'll be well looked after.
