Matt was off with tactics tonight. Trying to avoid a ban for Easty back fired as we needed him in midfield. Should never had taken Dennis off- he was the only one who looked like scoring. Donovan is so low on confidence he can't do anything coming off the bench. Without Omar he should have started with Kouassi and Dennis - brought on Angol later. David couldn't stand up and Will was totally ineffectual. Thought Rob is beginning to show his age and was caught for pace. Hart would have been the better option. The pitch was awful - who ever thought it a good idea letting the pitch be used last night should be shot - made commercial sense but with it being so wet it cut up -it was bobbly and showed up our lack of control with the ball at our feet- it especially affected Ali. We didn't win any ariel battles and were slow to the second ball.

Really flat performance from us. We certainly missed Craig (only on the bench) and Omar (not even in the squad), and perhaps the weekend exertions had taken a toll.
Grimsby played on the counter and, with greater accuracy, might have taken the lead earlier than they did. Once ahead they defended that lead effectively, with some fairly obvious running down of the clock as the game neared its end. There was certainly no evidence of them writing this game ahead off ahead of their big Cup match.
We stay 9th; I don't expect us to finish any higher.

Desperately poor from SU tonight, Grimsby were the only team to play any decent football and that wasn’t very often.
One big grumble, which I’ve already emailed the club about. I don’t have any problem with colour blindness, but the lack of contrast in the strips tonight was not acceptable. Why the hell didn’t GT play in black and white stripes? When play was on the far side it was difficult to distinguish all amber from all pale pink.

Still a good season but we need to rebuild the midfield around Eastmond.
We cannot continually carry two players from four.

The pitch was awful - who ever thought it a good idea letting the pitch be used last night should be shot - made commercial sense Ideally, of course, the club wouldn't have wanted the pitch to have been used last night but once a commitment had been made for the Premier League Club match to take place yesterday I imagine it was effectively impossible to renege on that. Also, the Grimsby match was, of course, due to take place at the weekend but was moved, I understand, to the only available date, ie this evening.

Dreadful performance and we certainly missed Eastmond in the middle of the park. Too many players having off days and Harry sadly is not the player he was a few seasons ago. Certainly won't write off the play offs just yet as we are only 1 point off them and we still have 9 games to play. That said we can't afford any more below par performances.

Disappointing performance against a very physical team. 1 shot on target in 180 minutes isn’t good enough. Hopefully the team can regroup over the next 10 days or so.
I have to say when the ball was down the far end I couldn’t tell who was with the kits being so similar. I thought the idea of kit clashes wasn’t supposed to happen anymore.

Absolutely nonsensical for Grimsby not to have played in their home kit.

Perhaps we should of played in red or that might have been worse in clash of colours.

We didn't win any ariel battles and were slow to the second ball. Well said. The only comment I feel was harsh is about milsom. He mistimed a tackle after being put under heavy pressure and if he'd not been on a yellow I think he'd have made the tackle for their goal. He's mostly been excellent this season. Matt absolutely did get it wrong tonight. Kouassi and Wilson are a partnership who I'd expect to score about 5 goals in a season between them and I didn't like angol and Dennis as a partnership much either. I think Wilson is done at this level tbh, his confidence is shot and he needs to drop down the leagues and find some goals. His weird timid header into the keepers arms said it all: his heads gone. Randall has been awful for some time now after a superb first half of the season. He just looks like he cannot be bothered. Shame neufville hasn't been available to offer a different option. Agree Harry is sadly way behind Smith and easty now. If we can upgrade in a few areas in the summer this could be a team challenging for top 3. Grimsby looked like a good side. Their 29 up top absolutely bossed Ben G and was the key to their win but we really did not give their defence anything to worry about tonight. Been awhile since I've seen such a toothless display from us. Wasn't at Gillingham away.

Is there something cursed about midweek games in mid-March? On the equivalent Tuesday ten years ago we lost 1-0 at home to a depleted and bottom-of-the-table Truro side, a performance that really plumbed the depths. One year ago, in a different sort of match, an injury-ravaged Sutton side lost 2-1 at Swindon. 🙁

I'm surprised so many have written off the play offs so soon. 9 games. Win them all we'll be in it. Perhaps that's unrealistic, but the fact we are playing 6 teams above us increases those chances. Grinding results out against Mansfield, Stockport, Northampton and Carlisle would totally change the complexion.
The interesting thing is that there are so many different views about why we lost and a lot of finger pointing about players, but at the end of the day whoever had a bad match, no single player lost us the game last night. As a collective we didn't turn up last night, and really if I had to pick a player of the match, I couldn't because no one stood out. Even when it was obvious in the 2nd half there was more of the same, the substitutions were the usual like for like. As a team we just ran out of ideas, and to be honest the signs of this were evident at home to Crewe a couple of weeks ago.
Best team won last night, by a country mile. And you can be certain, if we were Grimsby we'd be wasting time just as much (but maybe slightly less obviously!).
I'm not writing the season off as a "prepare for next season" until its out of our hands. Currently it's not.

The good run ends with a lacklustre performance against a better opponent. The first half we were anonymous. The second saw us huffing and puffing without threat (apart from a great run into the box from Dennis). Our wide-men again delivered little, but in truth had they done so I’m not sure much would have been done with the said deliveries. Our ball control was woeful, and I wouldn’t blame the pitch as Grimsby didn’t seem to suffer from it. As for the play-offs, it is still on imo.
My concern is that we have undoubtedly decent players way off their game, older players starting to lose just an edge and (Angol aside) strikers that have lost the habit to score. Work to be done.
