Maybe, just maybe, our opposition may have more than one eye on their FA Cup quarter-final tie this coming Saturday and make it easier for us to secure all three points.

Yes, you would have thought so. None of them will want to risk an injury before Saturday.

One Grimsby fan has already pre-emptively congratulated me on the three points 😂
Probably not a good idea to get complacent though!

It will be interesting to see how similar their starting XI tomorrow is to the one that takes the field on Sunday.
They're in mid-table so won't be over-bothered about tomorrow's result. But you take nothing for granted in football, and Matt will want his players to be properly focused. The prize (depending on how Mansfield fare at Northampton) could be 7th place at the final whistle.

Grimsby's away form isn't stellar, and they've let more goals in away in the last 6 away trips than any other side (13). Their recent form over the last 6 games hasn't been too bad, but then 4 of those 6 games were at home. There's obviously the huge FA cup caveat to how Grimsby will approach the game (one can only remember that Tuesday night at home to Dover 6 or so years ago) but also with a view of what's coming up beyond that. They're playing 2 games a week every week until the end of April so aside from the glory, there is going to be a squad management issue for Grimsby which will bite them on the bum very quickly if they are not careful. Even if they were not in the FA Cup and we were playing them on Saturday, we have nothing to fear.
In other news, a point in this fixture will make it mathematically impossible for us to finish bottom of the league. A win for us tonight plus a defeat for Hartlepool at Bradford on Saturday will that mathematically we'll be safe from relegation.

Of course Grimsby may rest some players with the FA Cup Q Final in mind - and their replacements may play out of their skins in a bid to force themselves into the reckoning for a place in the Q final line-up.

Could be some media interest as the pre-cursor to their game at the weekend. I am sure Brighton representatives will be in attendance.

No one decided that GGL might be a long way to go to watch what might be a 0-0 draw?
OK, I'll stop.
Probably...

Obviously nothing decided tonight. However, given our remaining fixtures, the fact that we have played more games than many around us and we are still playing 'catch up', this feels like a 'must win' game if we are to maintain a serious hope of featuring in the play offs.

I'm never sure about this "must win" business when applied to specific games against sides lower down the table. Should win, yeah maybe. But a win is a win regardless of who it's against. And one against, say, Mansfield would do ourselves a much bigger favour than one against Grimsby. I always feel saying we MUST win games like this is setting ourselves up for a bit of a blow to morale if it doesn't happen. Of course this time it will happen though

I agree with Dave. This is about probability, on the basis of previous League Two results. If we don't beat Grimsby this evening then we'd need a highly improbable combination of results, involving a number of wins against sides currently above us in the table, in order to finish in the top seven. Even with three points tonight, we'd need to go on and beat some of those sides. It boils down to a question of how many 'six-pointers' we can realistically expect to win during the run-in; I'm reckoning three out of six.

We've got a maximum possible total of 85 points we can get by winning our remaining 10 games. Win 5 of those and we'll get to 70 points which probably won't be enough to make a play off spot. Win 7 will give us 76 points with looking at how close the table is and where the teams are sitting will be enough to make the play offs.
So we're looking at 7 wins out of 10. Regardless of who we're playing, that's a huge ask. The draws will be what will stifle our challenge rather than specifically losing. i.e. not beating an average Crewe side at home or letting a 2-0 lead at Hartlepool slip probably have done more damage to our play off hopes than say an away defeat at Salford.
So in realistic terms, at least 7 games remaining are "must wins". To me, this one isn't any different.
