Here we are then.. the eve of another season and our third in the Football League. We welcome one of the title favourites on Saturday - fresh from their play-off success last term in what’s a very tough start to the season for Sutton! Am I right in thinking we’ve never beaten County?
It’s been quite a disjointed pre-season for us which Matt is glad to get out of the way to focus on the proper stuff. Having lost an almighty amount of players over the summer I feel our recruitment has been great where I look forward to seeing how the squad gels over time - just hope Ben Goodliffe is fit for Saturday.
Should be a big crowd for this opener!

Yes they seem to make Wrexham , Notts County & Stockport County favourites for automatic promotion. It rarely works out as they predict. Stockport will be suffering 2nd season syndrome and i think Wrexham & Notts will find it far tougher at first in League 2 despite the hype. Looking forward to this opener and hope our team will gel to send them back to Meadow Lane with zero points.

It's true, we've never beaten Notts, either in league or cup competition. Our best results against them were two 1-1 draws in 2019/20. In the following season, when we were National League champions, they did the double over us.
I agree that they may take a while to re-adjust to the higher level (as Stockport did last season), so this may be a good time to play them. But if we play as we did in our last two pre-season games, we'd get stuffed. Matt and the players will know that.
Their most eye-catching signing this close season has been striker David McGoldrick, who's now 35, but was playing for Derby County last season, and two seasons earlier was with Sheffield Utd in the Premier League.

Notts fan in peace!
Really looking forward to Saturday, a lot of hype about it at our end with it being our return to the FL after four years - cue a 1-0 home win!
In all seriousness, most Notts fans are expecting a tough battle, which was certainly true of our games in the NL - as I recall they were all pretty close affairs. Matt Gray is a wily operator and we know it won’t be easy - in fact, I think most of us would be happy to come away with a point.
We’ve a brand new keeper and our first choice CCB (Aden Baldwin) might start on the bench. Our defence was slightly susceptible to balls over the top last season as we play a high line. And I think your side is probably a fair bit bigger than ours, especially with the likes of Smith and Sowumni. So you might get some joy from set pieces. Patrick also looks a really great signing.
Having said that, we scored 128 goals in all comps last season, and as the poster above mentions, have added David McGoldrick to that in what is seen as a real coup. We lost Ruben Rodrigues to Oxford, but I am still expecting us to be dangerous going forward in most games this season.
Think we have sold 1200+ tickets, so should be a decent atmosphere. As I say, I think it will be a close one - wouldn’t be surprised at a 1-1, or 2-1 either way.
Enjoy the game!

I don't know about the rest of you, but seeing this thread started gave me a lovely warm feeling that we're finally about to kick off for real. I'm full of optimism for this season, especially with the squad that Matt has put together. I see Notts like our Maidenhead. A team we never beat, but when we do we go on to do great things. The Magpies bit is just a coincidence I don't think for a minute we're certain to win on Saturday, and it's going to be a tough challenge for sure, but if we manage to get our first points on the first day of the season, I just have a feeling we'll kick on pretty well. Welcome back proper football!

Is anybody else having trouble logging in to buy tickets? Ok, looks like you have to re-register with a stupidly long password of 14 or more characters. This doesn't affect the ifollow login.

I just tried to predict the starting 11 and subs, quite hard! I gave up.

Perhaps Matt is reading this and thinking "I might have a crack at it too".

Weather not playing ball which will knock a fair few off the attendance. Possible thunderstorms!
Rose
Kizzi Goodliffe Sowunmi Milsom
Coley Clay Eastmond Patrick
Smith Angol
My guess at line up. Banking on Goodliffe being fit! If he’s not and Jackson also not available it’ll be a very makeshift start. Not sure what Matt’s thinking re. front 2, Smith and 1 other seems likely.
I think we’re very much 2nd favourites on this one, ideally we’d have another couple of weeks to bed in signings and get our defence fit. Anything we get here is welcome.

I think this is a great time to play one of the favorites to win the league. They will also have a few new signings to bed into their line up. Take a point now to get our season up and running.
