Something I noticed last night (for the first time) was our players in possession stopping running then waving their arms around, presumably indicating their perceived lack of options. This happened a few times.

This happened a few times. Perhaps they were wondering what that round thing at their feet was and what they should do with it !

Something I noticed last night (for the first time) was our players in possession stopping running then waving their arms around, presumably indicating their perceived lack of options. This happened a few times. It was the lack of movement in front. THere was no out in midfield, only Patrick running into wide areas which was only going to work occastionally. The worst one was when Hart beat his man beautifully, came into a good central area then had literally no pass except backwards. The point of three men in the middle is you should always have an out and be able to recyle possession and move the ball through midfield. That we couldn't says it all about the quality of those players.

Now in our third League 2 season, we are no longer an unknown quantity. Perhaps we have not changed much but opposition clubs have thicker files on our players and the ways our team plays. Hoofball was never pretty to watch. However the Crazy Gang, Tony Pulis' Stoke, Neil Warnock's..anybody, Sean Dyche's Burnley all scored a lot of route 1 goals, goals from corners and long throws. All relied on an exceptional heading ability of the target man and sharp players feeding off his knock-downs and flick-ons. Right now Sutton do not have the players to make that style a success. We try it, but the results are poor. An annoyance was apparent in the match v the Villa kids, who knocked the ball about on the ground for 20 minutes, short one or two touch passes - when gradually Sutton started to adopt the same style and proved they could do it. Back to League two - crying out for an ability to move the ball from defence or keeper through midfield on the ground and U's never show it. Cries of "(get it) in the box" emanate from the U's dugout, but a lofted ball from 10 to 20 yards outside the box is not going to be much danger to a defence which wins its aerial duels. As most opponents have, of late. Spending a bit more time and effort to get the ball into the box with a pass on the ground seems to be ruled out.

Pinewalker has made some very good points. Huff ball is ugly football. In cup matches we play some good football with the ball on the ground.it shows that we can play that way.But as said before, come to league games ,it's back to A plan ( huff ball ) again as been said before, other clubs know how we play even after 2 years in the league. It has been good in the past but the type of play has to change.

Hoof Ball is not atractive but it can be effective if you have the players to do it, we don't.
Previously we had the likes of Dundo and the Bugiel who could hold the ball up, but last night it wasn't sticking and we found ourselves again and again being hit on the counter.
We don't have any stand out players this season but we do have a set of experienced players at this level who should simply be able to put together far better performances than of late.
It's not solely about budgets, teams with big ones have been relegated and teams like Harrogate manage to get by without setting the division alight.
It would not matter if we had a billion in the bank now we can't buy any players until January anyway.
I do not think the change of keepers has helped, we should have stuck with Rose, as the understanding between keeper and back 4 is critical.
I think any side trying to get them selves out of a hole should stick with 4-4-2 its a basic system tried and trusted.
Matt has my full support to turn things around in October, if that does not happen the board will need to make a decision.
Lets all get behind Matt and the players.

I shall certainly try to get behind the players. But I need to see a bit more than they gave last night. It's a two way street. And I fear that a tipping point has already been passed. Hate coming to that conclusion, but...

Yes I noticed the number of times players were frustrated because of the lack of options.
The negative comment about changing formations in a game is ridiculous. All managers change things to try to make different things happen.
I still don't understand why we didn't start with 2 wingers though.

Wow. When they destroyed us at our place a few seasons ago, I was sure he'd take them up at the first time of asking. Really surprised he couldn't complete the job, but with their fanbase and (I assume) budget, they should be competing at the top end, so there you go.
