More out of respect for Matt and the job he did for us, I'm starting a new thread where you can all throw as much speculation as you want to. Here's the latest betting, but as with any betting, take it with a pinch of salt. I can well imagine other out of work managers not on the list could well have been sending their CVs to the club. www.bettingodds.com/thesackrace/teams/sutton-united

I'd want a manager with a record of success in the National League, because that's where we will probably be next season. Do we know of any out of work managers who have won the National League?

I know that I am asking how long is a piece of string but would anybody hazard a guess as to how long the whole process will take ?

A good thread Andy. I would give Jason a go.He knows the squad etc. There are some good names in the frame. It's going to be a tough decision that the Board will have to make.

I doubt that we'll have anyone new taking the reins before mid-January. Unless there's one outstanding applicant, the Board will want to draw up a shortlist then arrange interviews, not easy to get done over the festive period when a lot of people are away and there's also a busy match schedule. If Jason is in charge for the next 4-5 games, that gives him the opportunity to make his case.

I’d say Steve Morison is a very plausible option. Not surprised one bit to see Kevin Betsy named but, based on what I read on the Crawley Town forum, I wouldn’t touch him with a barge pole.

There are a number of names on that list who, were one of them to be appointed, would tempt me to take a pair of scissors to my season ticket.

Surely we need to move quicker than mid January. We don’t have that sort of time. Can’t imagine Jason is a serious option, effectively we’d be continuing with the same set up. Yes, might have own ideas but can’t think he wasn’t heavily involved in trying to fix things this season. No disrespect intended to him at all. I wouldn’t have changed things but if we are it surely has to be a proper departure in my view. And with someone with success of sorts as a manager, with enough kudos to get the group together and potentially attract 1 or 2 that can make a difference,

If Jason is in charge for the next 4-5 games, that gives him the opportunity to make his case. I understand why that period of time might be desirable. But if I was on the board and I had a clock and a calendar on my wall, and access to the remaining fixtures (which are not so plentiful), I'd be moving a fair bit faster than that. And if people are serious about this then they can either not go away or just come back. Imo, Jason is not in the frame. Continuity is not a useful card at the moment.

The only way the club could make a quick appointment would be if they had somebody lined up before making the announcement about Matt. And that's not the Sutton way of doing things.

You don't think that might be a bit stick-in-the-mud? Under the circumstances. Which are dire.

We could have identified people we want to talk to. Initial discussions could have taken place the next day. That still doesn’t guarantee a quick appointment but it can be done. I can’t imagine the decision wasn’t a while in the making and therefore thoughts of who and what the alternative might be should have been had. It would be quite amateurish if there was no plan about how we would go about things given the urgency of the situation other than let’s invite applications and see what happens.

If Jason is in charge for the next 4-5 games, that gives him the opportunity to make his case. By Mid late Jan It will basically make the job far less attractive with less times to turn it around and likely more points adrift. I think the best case scenario would be to keep the back room staff and have a new manager at the game on Sat watching from the stands ready to take over for the next game. Perhaps they will want their own guys but I think it would make for a smoother transition if the likes of Jason G was still in the dugout. The new manager might not get much time on the training field but it would give him more time to get to know the team.

I want to trust our board have an urgent plan to appoint a new manager to give us the best chance to save our efl status . I worry that with the Christmas holidays, like the last poster, they may allow 4 or more games to pass with the existing coaching team, concerned whether this will be enough to motivate the players to win matches. In the few games before when Mr Gray left Mr Goodliffe in charge it felt like the team slacked off. I wait with some trepidation and nervous excitement to see what tactical changes(if any) he might make for Saturday. Hopefully the players sleeves will be rolled up to give a go. The players really do need to unify "as one". Aim high for 9 more points by the end of 2023.
