It's vital that the chemistry is right between a manager and his assistant. That certainly appeared to be so with Matt and Jason, in spade loads. In the same way, it's important that the new manager has, as his number two, someone who he believes he can work most effectively with. Whether that's his assistant at Hornchurch (as has been reported), Jason or A N Other will no doubt be confirmed very soon.

Given the amount of prior speculation I'm a little surprised by the limited response to this news, thus far. I can only assume that people are thinking about this very hard?

I quite agree with BoomBoom's post regarding the position of manager and his assistant ( as per Matt and Jason) It will of course be interesting to see how Steve and his assistant can gel the squad with their own way of doing things. Also looking forward to see if there is any variation to the way we play.

For what it's worth, Steve Morison and Jason Goodliffe were both players at Stevenage during 2006/07, so will know each other.

Is Jason going to be Steve's assistant or is there going to be a new assistant coming in?

Ant Fenton is coming as his assistant.
I would like to place on record my sincere thanks to Steve and to Ant Fenton who will take up the role of Steve’s assistant from Monday.

Is Jason going to be Steve's assistant or is there going to be a new assistant coming in? We don't know yet. The BBC has reported that Steve Morison's assistant, Anthony Fenton, is also leaving Hornchurch, implying that he'll join us as Assistant Manager. But it's possible that talks are going on about a role for Jason in the new set-up. We'll find out soon enough.

Fenton, as confirmed by Hornchurch, will be Steves no 2. As for what the plans are for the rest of the backroom staff we shall see next week I would imagine.
As a small tightly nit club with some long term staff, these things may be more emotionally stressful and depressing I think. While it would be nice to see all or most of them have a place still, I think if Steve is to make a difference then we will need to respect his decisions on this, as ultimately he needs to have complete confidence in who he is working with. After all, it is his name that will now be held accountable for where we go from here.
I am sure all the staff anticipated the uncertainty after Matt was sacked, which means even more credit should go to them for their professionalism and in how they have prepared and got some good performances out of the team during this time.

Superb post in every aspect for me . I would be very happy indeed if a role would be available for Jason , just as I’m hoping to hear soon that Matt has found a new club .

I wish him all the best. Let’s face it none of us know whether this is a good or bad appointment. All we have to go on with managers are their past records. Steve’s is a pretty short one. If it turns out as well as the last couple of choices we’ll all be very happy.
He comes at a great time for a new manager. The only way is up. We actually have the players in my opinion to survive. It’s a good opportunity for him. League 2 is a division you can go from one of the poorest to one of the better sides quite quickly.

Good luck to Steve. I’m not sure we have enough good players who we can rely on to stay fit and/or out of disciplinary trouble.
Steve hasn’t got long to make reckoning on the squad. My guess is that he’ll quickly bring in some players who he believes he can rely on to replace fan favourites.
Interesting times! We’ll see what happens.

Looks a wildcard choice to me, pulled Cardiff City out of a relegation battle, then had a poor start to the 22/23 season before getting the sack, mind you Vincent Tan is a nut case, so that isn't much to go on. Since joining Hornchurch, he has just lost 1 of 22 league matches, he likes attacking football, and all in all, an interesting appointment. I hope he gets some money to spend, but I am not holding my breath. Since his appointment, Hornchurch have averaged nearly four goals per match (82 from 21) far ahead any of their rivals. However, they didn't do at all badly the previous season, netting 133 from 42 matches, finishing second in the table. It therefore appears that Steve had more than solid foundations to build upon which he did with considerable success.

From my perspective he ticks 3 boxes - saving a league club in a downward spiral from relegation, having a lot of league contacts and being a significantly different character to the previous manager. That will do for me for starters. We'll never know who else was in serious contention, but I would like to think if we'd won all of our holiday fixtures then Jason would have been offered the job, and I'd have no complaints (although others would have).
As Garethl said, I think we have the players to do it, and with no disrespect to Matt whatsoever, some have shown this more since he went last month. Ignoring the Mansfield game (where everything was totally up in the air), I don't think we can say that any of our squad that has appeared has done worse than when Matt was on board, and I would get the impression that next Saturday, against Barrow, Morison would be looking at that match to see where he needs to strengthen and which players he thinks will be up for the fight. I expect the majority will be.
Morison also has a reputation on working better with senior pros than with younger players. Whilst that could well be a weakness, as we have one of the oldest squads in the division and very few U21s in our squad, that could actually be a blessing.
I'm rather excited about this appointment but I'll be sad if Jason goes - either because we don't have a role for him or if he decides this is no longer the place for him (it may be both), but he showed in a few games he has what it takes to be a positive influence on any club smart enough to offer him a job. I notice that Havant still have a managerial vacancy...
Let's all get behind him and together get us out of this mess we're currently in.
