I don't suppose that Steve is quite sure what he 'is' yet, as a manager. The time scale from Cardiff U23s to now is very short. Hornchurch probably represents a sensible and very successful soft landing after, arguably, being given a lack of time at Cardiff in his second season. But then, he was really used as a fire-fighter in that L1 context and Tan may have had half a mind on a replacement for that second season well in advance. We'll soon find out if he's L2 equipt. True, though he did also manage the Cardiff under 23s before that as well, which is valid expiriance.. Is it? The purpose of an U23 side is to develop players. The purpose of the 1st team is to win matches. Different things.

The purpose of the 1st team is to win matches. Different things. Development and management, including their squads, selection and games. That must surely include learning how to manage and win matches? It was valid enough experience to have him moved on as interim manager for the first team when they needed someone, where he then remained. While its obviously not as advanced as managing a first team league club, IMO its great expiriance, working with and managing players who are of similar standard to lower league or Nat league sides, and some likely a higher standard. He would have also been given the task of moulding the team and players in line with the Cardiff ethos at that time, which requires ability.

I heard he was relieved of his duties last Sunday. He's Still listed as assistant manager on the website, and was named as such on the programme today along with the new assistant.

What specific factors attracted him to taking the job at Sutton United? (as i understand that he rejected a few advances from other clubs) Think he said in an interview I heard that the long term ambition of the club was a big factor, so you have to say well done too the board for the appointment.⚽️⚽️⚽️

I heard he was relieved of his duties last Sunday. He's Still listed as assistant manager on the website, and was named as such on the programme today along with the new assistant. But our website is a bit slow and not the most informative. I noticed all but him in the Dugout today. The website has not even announced the clubs current number 2.

Fair point, but the website shows Anthony Fenton, Mickey Stephens and Jason Goodliffe all as assistant head coaches. If those updating the website had time to add the new assistant head coach, I don't think a full 7 days after he was "released" he'd be shown on there as still being part of the staff. Updates may be slow, but they're not that slow and bearing in mind all of the released players are now no longer on the website, I think it's safe to presume he is still part of the coaching staff. It may well be the case that he coaches during the week, and now not being "number 2" there may not be an obligation for him to be at the matches. He may have felt that being there for the first game in charge by the new gaffer that it wasn't appropriate. Just because we didn't see him there for one match, I don't think we can jump to any conclusions.

Adding Anthony Fenton and removing the released players must have happened yesterday afternoon or today as those changes had not been made yesterday morning when I checked for info on Charlie Lakin.

Great interview with Steve from a few years back. Interesting insight into life as a player and his outlook on stuff... Interesting how we judge players without knowing the inside scenarios..

Conceded 24 goals in last four matches. No new manager yesterday. Away next week, again the week after then “home” to top team Fulham though I suspect that’ll be played at South Park.
Have played two matches at VBS since September.

We now have "coaches" rather than "managers", assistant or otherwise, I assume a change of title rather than responsibilities?

There may be a change in responsibilites, but at the end of day the management team is pretty much that. A team. Although thanks for pointing that out, it justifies the position that if Jason was let go of last Sunday, why bother changing his job title?
