Are you really surprised that Smith didn't want to play non-league football?
I'm sure there are several players lined up. I don't think Duke would want NL football either.

It seems Steve Arnold has signed for another year with Sutton.

As these players were under contract, do we suspect they have left on frees due to relegation release clauses? It will be a real blow to not be getting transfer fees for the club's two biggest assets among the playing staff. If so, I have a feeling the playing budget will be wafer thin this season. SM has a real job on his hands to make us competitive. Over to you, Steve.

The statement says that the players declined contract extensions. This implies, although does not necessarily mean, that they were on one year contracts and are therefore free agents.

That is great news too get him on an extended contract, so the first peace of the jigsaw done, more to come.⚽️

He'll have a long wait for that first pre-season home game

This is the most frustrating time of the year. We don't know who's coming in and won't until at least the end of the month if not later.

The statement says that the players declined contract extensions. This implies, although does not necessarily mean, that they were on one year contracts and are therefore free agents. But it was also implied they were under contract for next season. That would suggest they had relegation release clauses, which is not unusual, and were thus able to walk for nothing. Bugger.

If the money is there you can sign and retain players and get players of league quality, Stockport did it, Wrexham did it.
If you don't have the budget then you have to sign players from NL, it will be interesting to see our signings as this will show the clubs ambition and direction.

Back pedalling slightly, I have no idea why anyone would think that Smith might have wanted to stay with us. From his point of view he had a very frustrating season. Being one of the few functional parts of a disfunctional team can't be a lot of fun.

The singular announcement that Steve Arnold has signed to me suggests Sam Hart and Matt Kerby are yet to make up their minds whether to sign for the new season.

Being one of the few functional parts of a disfunctional team can't be a lot of fun. He did miss 9 games through suspension and whilst you cannot single out individual moments as a reason for relegation the miss at Harrogate and penalty miss at home to Colchester if converted may have provided the extra points for us to stay up. Smith was brought in as a like for like replacement for Bugiel by the previous manager and may not fit our plans. If the players don’t want to play for us let them go in my opinion. He may have been offered a deal but on a significant pay cut. We will never know.
