Back pedalling slightly, I have no idea why anyone would think that Smith might have wanted to stay with us. From his point of view he had a very frustrating season. Being one of the few functional parts of a disfunctional team can't be a lot of fun. He did miss 9 games through suspension and whilst you cannot single out individual moments as a reason for relegation the miss at Harrogate and penalty miss at home to Colchester if converted may have provided the extra points for us to stay up. Smith was brought in as a like for like replacement for Bugiel by the previous manager and may not fit our plans. If the players don’t want to play for us let them go in my opinion. He may have been offered a deal but on a significant pay cut. We will never know. Indeed. Without wanting to get back into the 'targeted by Refs' argument, I think his disiplinary record was problematic for us. But so was our over reliance on him. Either way, my point was that from his point of view (not ours), this is not somewhere he'd necessarily want to stay.

What was surprising following retention list was that we don’t get a fee. That’s a shame.

One other factor in his going that I have not seen mentioned is directly related to a question I asked a couple of weeks ago …… are we staying full time next season with the hope of an immediate bounce back up . Or are we going part time . If it is to be the latter then that would surely mean a significant pay cut …… none of us would like that in our lives .

You cannot make a player sign if he does not want to, so people who blame the board for smith leaving are talking rubbish because you cannot put a gun to his head and make him sign. Regards full time, you have to be in this league if you want to compete, so I would expect us to stay full time as the club want promotion sharpish.⚽️⚽️⚽️

Whilst we are all quite rightly looking forwards on this thread, I can’t help but look back as well and think that the departure of Eastie, H and Dundo deserved more acknowledgement than our applause for the team in general after MK Dons. The days of player testimonials are long gone for a number of reasons of course but I just feel sad that they have left the club without the fans truly being able to say “thank you” to these 3 specifically for their “run through a brick wall on a cold Tuesday night in Barrow” attitude towards playing for the badge. It feels that #Inittogether and #ForeverAmber were born out us having players with that sort of commitment. So from me at least, for what it’s worth (and I know others have said so on AP) I say “thanks for the memories “ to all 3 of them.

Legends, deserved more than a few lines on the website, but that is the times we now live in :

That is news I didn’t want to hear. I'm not that bothered. Certainly last season, I thought he was the weakest of our weak defence. Exemplified by his utter horror show performance at Swindon in September, where he was instrumental in all of Swindon's 5 goals. And getting caught out far too many times (like at Accrington and Doncaster). I always thought he was better outside his preferred position, especially centre back, but I'm not going to lose sleep over this, even though he is obviously a decent guy.
