Well in that case my 10 year old son may have inadvertantly taken his coca cola on to the terrace in a plastic cup given to him from behind the bar. Woops! Maybe common sense prevailed in this instance.Unfortunately he wasn't able to down it too quickly.

Do you think he could sneak 3 pints of Carlsberg out next week?

I think allowing coke bottles is totally different from allowing pint glasses on the terraces, I would say that if anyone feels the need to smuggle things like Vodka in their bottle then maybe they should be attending AA meetings instead of football!

I expect on Sundays you can be seen campaigning outside pubs with your Sally Army chums warning people of the dangers of the devil's drink?
If you feel that Sutton fans are less responsible and need controlling more than Carshalton fans then that's where I differ.

I followed this thread hoping we would get a decent debate. There's been a few decent comments and a lot of nonsense, but nothing can top this shite...
Have a look at the bar at half-time - ten deep, the bar maids are stressed, and people necking their drinks really quickly, sometimes drinking up to three pints in 15 minutes or downing double vodkas. That's a medical and psychological cocktail that could lead to another Heysel.
Vern, I'm not sure it will be a big issue for you anyway, I doubt you'd get served at your age. Shouldn't you be out getting your new school shoes?

I followed this thread hoping we would get a decent debate. Debates require contribution, so contribute. You can look up irony in the dictionary before you do as well.

I'd love to have a nice beer on the terraces, and would never dream of behaving anti-socially as a result. I'm sure that everyone else on this board feels the same.
BUT - I do also want to have total confidence that if a tiny minority of dicks go too far and make the atmosphere unpleasant or threatening for others, it won't be tolerated.
If I'm in a pub, or a cricket ground, or a rugby match, and there's trouble, it's usually pretty swiftly dealt with. If we're confident that GGL has the resources to deal with potential aggro, then great. But by the sounds of it, we don't have those resources, and I think there's potentially a lot to lose for a relatively small gain.
Vern - you made some good points earlier but smuggling drinks in a coke bottle? Please. How old are you mate? Come on, surely that's a joke.
As for smoking, I'm an occasional smoker but I'd consider it pretty ignorant to light up while standing (or sitting) next to someone else. I'm more than happy not to smoke in the ground, if it's hindering others' enjoyment. There's no point of comparison at all to driving a car to the ground - that was a bizarre analogy.

It wasn't a coke bottle. It was a pint of coke in a plastic glass.

OK, can we stop suggesting anyone who wants to drink during the game needs to go to AA, wanting to enjoy a beer whilst watching footy is no worse than wanting to enjoy a cigarette or a cup of tea.
Also can we stop the petty insults.
I've really enjoyed this, but lets not turn this in to a slanging match.

Fair play, I've bitten there!
For what it's worth, I'm more than happy with my couple of pints pre match, one at half time and a couple after, and of course there's always the hip flask in the winter! I've watched football at various levels top to bottom for 30+ years and have never had a bevvy during the match, so it's not really an issue.
ps - shouldn't you be watching Blue Peter?

Smoking allowed YES: Because we have a open ground and there is plenty of room for people to smoke and not effect others. I do agree that it is just plain rude to light up next to someone be it in a football ground or anywhere else.
Drinking (soft) / Eating allowed YES: Because it is not the containers of soft drinks which cause issues as almost all supporters who come to GGL are grown up enough not to throw them.
Alcohol Not-Allowed: Because although most people are sensible with alcohol there are a small percentage of people who are not. The club does not want a name for drink related incidents in the ground and policing would be very difficult. It could also attract the wrong type of people to GGL, you don't need many just one or 2 is enough to spoil everything.
I have seen to many games to count at all levels to know that drink related incidents would be rare but enviable. The club is trying to build strong community links which means maybe 3 or 4 hundred kids in the ground sometimes and drink on the terraces is not compatible and could undo a lot of hard work done by many.
