I think the players showed a lacked of self-belief this evening, which is both surprising and disappointing.
We started poorly and conceded a sloppy early goal after failing to clear our lines. The equaliser, which came after Steve Perkins had headed on a free kick, seemed to inject life into the players, and we were on top for most of the rest of the first half with Perks adding a second through a towering header.
However, confidence is a fragile thing and after conceding again early in the second half our players seemed to lose heart and handed the initiative back to Kingstonian. Fair play to them, they took full advantage and contained us pretty effectively from then on while adding two more goals. Anthony Joseph came on as a sub and threatened with a few raids down the wing, but that was about the sum total of our attacks as the game wound down.
It's pretty pointless to speculate, but I can't help wondering if we'd have done better playing away from home. K's came into this game as underdogs, and we know that sometimes that can work in your favour.

Bottle job. Utter Flipping bottle job.
Two years effort and graft wasted in one half of panicking when there was absolutely no need to panic.

Gutted, and I guess that Dos has failed with his target of getting us up in two years. That's the downside of one leg playoff games - half an hour or so of madness and it is all over.

just got home from the match which we threw away with rubbish defending an the wrong tactics 2nd half.how can a team who controlled the game first half look like the away team 2nd half.then when a team score against us we can't respond.the defence needs looking at when a player can pick the ball up run freely throuh the defence and score something's wrong.we also need a 20 goal a season striker who can change a game with one chance.i'm not happy cause on our 1st half showing we should have won!.

Now for an (I hope) objective view from a K's fan. No WUM, no glaoting.
We started well, you looked nervous, as if the mantle of favourites was a bit heavy. Stupid and slightly odd opening goal, very good comeback. Perhaps the turning point was when you guys deservedly led 2-1 but couldn't get that 2 goal 1/2 time advantage which, frankly, wouldn't have flattered you. One wonder save from Tolfrey low to his left just before half time helped keep us in it.
Second half, well, earlier posters on this thread have said it all. You went back in to your shell, conceded the lead, your shape, your game plan and, as a result, the game. Traynor's goals? No brainer if you're a K's fan but I suspect that all fair minded Sutton fans must applaud his skill, too. They were ion very different ways two exceptional finishes.
Neutral's view of Sutton? Very good side, probably worthy of BSS, provided you get yourselves a ruthless finisher and, ideally, a gnarled old veteran to hold it all together in midfield when the going gets tough. Perkins impressed in defence and at set pieces - a sweet and classic centre half's headed goal from the free kick, El-Salahi does little wrong and Phillips is a little magician.
Cheers to all at GGL and thanks for a lovely evening, for me and my 13 year old (no, I'm not being sarcastic, I really mean it).
C'mon you super hoopsa,
Simon

Well done and thanks to Dos, the rest of the management team and the players for giving us a fantastic season. You don't always get what you deserve sadly.
Last night hurt like hell - the lowest I can remember feeling after a game for a very long time. However; what I was feeling was shared by the fans and management team and players alike.
It will make Dos all the more determined to put it staright next season; of that I'm sure.
Last night also showed how many people we can attract through the turnstiles if we get success. For the neutral it must have been one hell of a game. For me it was just hell.
Onwards
Carpe diem!

Last night hurt like hell - the lowest I can remember feeling after a game for a very long time. Onwards You certainly looked glum last night, mate - as did the rest of us. I've not felt quite so low since that bloody 2nd leg debacle. Perhaps our lot just ran out of steam? Who knows. What we do know is that we'll be back to do it all over again next season. BTW, Mrs Amber tried to lessen my bad mood this morning by suggesting it was "only a game". No, that didn't help much....

BTW, Mrs Amber tried to lessen my bad mood this morning by suggesting it was "only a game". No, that didn't help much.... Snap..... On a cheery note she also complained about the noise we were making from almost 2 miles away! My nephews first ever game he has been 'promised' a Chelsea match but based on how much he was buzzing from the atmosphere I think he'll be back with us. I would like to thank everyone for a fantastic season I hope the management and players are ready to hit the ground running next season and we can win it by Christmas.... 5th round of FA too would be nice!

Well, that's another 9 months down the drain.
First 10 minutes we were dreadful. Conceded a shite goal and K's, without looking overly threatening, were well in charge. Then for the first time this season someone actually attacked the far post from a cross and from nowhere we were level.
This gave us the kick up the arse needed and we took charge. Finally got our shape and started to play. Perks deservedly put us in front with a superb header and we looked very comfortable up until HT.
Second half, all we had to do was come out & do nothing but shut up shop for 10-15 minutes and it takes the sting out of their inevitable surge. Sadly, we did what we've done several times this season. Been a total shambles after the restart & it's 2-2 (cracking strike BTW. Can't take that away from the guy). From then on, we were never in the game.
The performance over the next 40 minutes was pony. No shape, cohesion, nothing. Got ripped to bits down the left and it was from there Traynor hit the worldy third. What a goal. In fact I recall saying exactly that at the time. Shortly after saying "Don't you f*cking dare!" as he launched himself at it. Probably the best strike I've seen at GGL in a long long time.
Still, amazing what happens when someone attacks near post eh?
From then on, the 4th was inevitable (how many blokes did he run past BTW? 3? 4? Not cool lads). And if they'd really forced the issue, they could quite feasibly have had a couple more. Thankfully they didn't.
Had we had a go 2nd half and got beaten by the two super goals from Mr Traynor, fair enough. You've got to hold your hands up and say it's not your night. Sadly, we can do no such thing. We just didn't compete and in the biggest game of the season, that's just not Flipping acceptable.
That's 2 PO semi's in 2 years and 2 thumpings. I'd rather have finished 6th if I'm honest.
OS - I disagree with your last comment. The management, yes. The team, not a chance. Not good enough. Flattered to decieve all year, too many players either think they're better than they are or simply don't turn up often enough, not strong enough & not enough nous. Another rebuild looms methinks......

Taz,
Great summary, with which I would agree 100%, from a red and white perspective, rather than an amber and gold one. See my posting above for a neutral's view on what you might need to step up from being a strong Ryman Prem side to a credible BSS one.
I suggested on our own forum earlier this week that, despite our respective form (ie K's complete lack of) going in to this game, the pressure was all on you guys. And to me, that's how it looked in the first 10 and the second half, once Thompson's exocet had brought us back level at 2-2. Despite some brilliant individual performances - Phillips turned my bowels to water every time he got the ball within 40 yards of our goal - you fell apart as a team.
Good luck against Godalming in the SSC. You deserve some silverware for your excellent season.
C'mon you super hoopsa!!!!!

I've got to partly agree with Taz and OS but not completely. I think we can totally fault the effort of the side in the 2nd half. Like I've said previously, we gifted K's that game in the 2nd half last night. And the team and management have to accept responsibility for that. But even in my disappointment, I'll accept last night if this meant that fate is going to deal us a league title next season.
I'm not going to start speculation here, but I know who I would keep for next season and who I would replace. I'm sure Dos knows where we need to strengthen, and it was a stronger team than last year.
