Good report from the paper, now we know why PD went for that team. Both players did very well and will give Pual a selection headache for Saturday.

The Sutton Guardian report explains why Binns and Downer didn't start. That wasn't a problem as Rents and Clough came into the starting XI and played well. The players who weren't out there for 90 minutes may be a little fresher for Saturday! Last night's crowd of 662 was a touch diasppointing, but there were extenuating circumstances (M25 traffic, live football on TV). The aggregate attendance over the two matches was still more than 2,000 so there are some decent gate receipts to share out. And, of course, Sutton bank an extra £12.5k for getting to the 1st Round. As for the stewarding issues, I also don't recall seeing those particular 'professionals' at Sutton before. Sometimes clubs take extra security precautions on advice from the police or FA (remember our segregation against Tonbridge a few seasons ago?), though I've no idea whether that was the case last night. I'm sure that our club management committee will have noted the comments on the forums.

The steward who searched me for booze and pyro told me it was down to an FA instruction, I also heard it was possibly attributed to some pitch invasion/flare naughtiness by HH at St Albans a week or so back. Bizarre if that's the case as you could have wandered into their ground with a keg and a bazooka on saturday and no one would have batted an eyelid as you sloshed your way around the pitch on a sea of lager. If we were getting felt up by private security hired in specially for the night because of HH's previous its a bloody nerve their fans coming on here and moaning about it.

I do think the "arriving late" comment isn't fantastic os. There's been a few times where we've been caught out by traffic and it's something you can legislate for. Even Prem sides like Salisbury had it happen to them last season. As for the stewarding - first time I've seen an "outside" company for a long time. It's a shame if the heavy handiness was the case, and something the club may need to address in future. I was a little disappointed with one or two Sutton fans last night - including one who was overly aggressive in a response to Hemel fans leaving the ground. The Hemel support were a little "Kingstonian" with their taunts towards our fans but full credit to them for their enthusiastic support. And credit to their side who gave it a good go. Certainly better than, say, Staines were here earlier in the year. My comments were not simple arrived at them arriving late as you can say that can happen to anyone, but more of the general lack of organisation going back to the first match, really 5pm was far too late for their team to leave. I agree with the HH fan I think he has his view spot on about both his team and the over the top stewards who were not our normal bunch. HH have a lot of potential, I really liked their midfield although narrow made it very difficult to play through. I don't think any of the 3 penalties given were actually correct, not just harsh but wrong. I am less then impressed with Hutton who When you look at the video close up from Sat did take a dive for the penalty and the Tom booking. I wish HH luck for the rest the season.

Moving off topic, it was nice to see a team there off the pitch last night that might have had the makings of a good side:- Eddie Akuamoah, Steve Fowler, Craig Watkins and Matt Gray. A rare visit from Matt, who is on a short holiday from Australia. Put Chris Vagg in goal and we could have had a 5-a-side challenge !

I don't know about that. Leaving at 4.45 pm for a journey which is just over an hour in normal traffic, and in half term week where traffic is generally lighter isn't really unreasonable. They just had bad luck on the M25. Mind you, I'm still as bemused as you are about the penalties on Saturday. Least there were no stupid decisions last night, bar Mitch's yellow.

The stewarding was disappointing, but it's a case of damned if you do, damned if you don't. I didn't see anything that our normal stewards wouldn't have been able to handle. They certainly wouldn't have confiscated the plastic rod from Johnnie's flag. A shame when a lad who assists the club in the way he does is treated that way. Presumably the fact it was a replay meant we couldn't get in the extra catering that we normally do when a larger crowd is expected.
As for HH, having missed the first game and read the reports, I was expecting more from them. In the end I thought they were a tough, strong team who banged the ball up the park and filled the box with big lads at every opportunity, but played very little football.
Can't make the 1st round, but I'll be at GGL for the replay and penalty shoot out.

Had to laugh about that flag. Johnnie bought it in the club shop last week and then they confiscated it a week later. Is it a revenue generation initiative from the club?
Incidentally I saw the Hemel lad retrieving his flag pole after the game from the slightly overbearing security. He was a very polite young lad and wished Sutton all the best for the next round. Didn't look much like a hooligan to me

Similar problems for Bradford PA at Kiddy last night.
"The game finished at 22.52; it would be a late one back in Bradford"

I still think that's a little unfair, OS. This isn't a full-time club, after all. These people have to work. And that isn't late for what should have been an easy journey. Could happen to anyone - in fact it happened to Kidderminster last night too, of course. Totally agree with the steward comments. I found it quite bizarre to be stopped and searched on my way in for the first time in my 18 years following Sutton! Not that I have anything against that, and of course anyone could be up to no good despite how long they've followed their team. No, what I had a problem with was the fact that so many Hemel fans report being made to feel like wrongdoers - especially what I heard about one of them having a flag taken off him (why?) and that comment about one of them being frogmarched away without being spoken to first. If that's true, and I've no reason to doubt that, then it is a bit saddening. I've never seen those particular stewards at Sutton before. EDIT: oh, was it a flag pole? Someone said there was a flag too. Hey ho. No point in getting wound up over rumours.

Similar problems for Bradford PA at Kiddy last night. "The game finished at 22.52; it would be a late one back in Bradford" It seems BPA were unlucky last night, below is a typical post on the Kiddy forum. very lucky to get through. I listened to Sundays game and it sounded like bpa deserved to nick in and last night they fully deserved it they should have been 3 up at ht. their capt and 8 9 and 10 stood out for me. First half was the poorest I've seen us play for a good while. It says on the shuttle report re burr going mad at ht and rightly so. We started the second half we'll but that soon faded when we decided to lump balls up to Malbon. I agree that Johnson should have been bought on earlier but credit to him he looked like his old self which is what we need as he was class for us last season. To me the players like some of the fans underestimated bpa hopefully the past two games will shake the players of that and set them in good stead for the sutton game. My motm ams worked his socks off capped it with a goal him marv and Micky d and Lewis only players to come off the pitch last night with any sort of credit

The reports below come from non league matters they are ground hoppers so the reports are unbiased.
62. Tuesday 29 October 2013 – FA Cup Third Qualifying Round (Replay) – Attendance: 662 Sutton United (amber & chocolate trim/amber/amber) 2-0 Hemel Hempstead Town (red & white trim/red/red) Scorers: Sutton United (Fuseini 15, Dundas 87) Pitch: excellent, cut short, watered – Weather: mild at start, going cold, 7 degrees C at the finish
Hemel Hempstead Town did not help themselves by arriving late and delaying the kick-off by 20 minutes. They left Hemel Hempstead in their coach at 4.45 and spent nearly three hours on the M25. Not the best start to a game and one from which they never recovered. Sutton United just about had the game under control, except for the occasional scare. Craig Dundas robbed the visitor’s goalkeeper to wrap up the win, after Ali Fuseini had struck the first. Scarcely half the attendance of last Saturday’s first game – the game didn’t have local appeal.
Also (c)at...
Agreed that the very delayed journey could not have helped the visitors in any way. Hardly ideal preparation when your coach rolls in at 19.45, though in the end we did very well to get going at 20.05. One of our party was fearful that we were not going to get under way at all.
In the end a somewhat disappointing contest that never really had that fourth qualifying round replay feel. Sutton are clearly in a run of good form and largely controlled play I thought Hemel lacked the imagination to break down a well organised defence and also what did not help the visitors was a tendency to overhit passes. I appreciate that hindsight is a wonderful gift that none of us possess but was there any logic to Hemel using all of their subs by the hour mark and then having to play the last twenty minutes with a player deficit after another injury.
Maybe the outcome would have been different if the visitors had taken an early lead but Mackey angled a very good chance wide of the near post after an intelligent low cross behind the defence from Thorne. Almost immediately Sutton took the lead when Fuseini was lurking on the edge of the area and took advantage of the loose ball in his direction by dispatching with power and precision past Walker.
Despite a lot of possession from Hemel they only rarely looked dangerous and it was noticed the solid dependable defensive role being commendably undertaken by both Jamie Stuart and Charlie Clough, though what was at times a rather tedious match lacked a spark. The spark arrived in the form of Dale Binns for Sutton in what turned out to be an inspired substitution. At last a player prepared to find space beyond the midfield morass, he took on the visitors defence. His first cross was mishandled by Walker into the path of Scannell whose shot was blocked by a defender with the rebound falling to Slabber whose close range effort was spectacularly saved by the recovering Walker. Binns' second cross was subtly laid back for Fuseini whose rising shot was tipped over by Walker.
Yet there seemed to be an over riding sense of caution about Sutton's play. Taking off a forward (Scannell) and replacing him with a defender (Downer) with ten minutes left when you have a goal and player advantage seemed a strange move. But in the end passage into the first round was sealed when a clearly tired Connolly tried to go round Dundas on the edge of his own area, was easily dispossessed and Dundas placed the ball wide of Walker.
Encountered a very thorough search from a steward prior to entry, surprised that they did not wheel in an airport scanner as well. Needless to say all of the Hemel supporters behaved themselves impeccably throughout, no flares or smoke bombs etc.
Another one at the Sutton United game. Not sure why the stewards felt it necessary to search fans as they went in (one Hemel fan was being told he wasn't allowed to take his flag in as I arrived), and there was an incident during the first half during which it seemed that the stewards were trying to eject an away fan for having the temerity to try to create an atmosphere by banging on the back of the stand. Combined with the ridiculously slow service at the food bar (I missed a good 10 minutes of the second half), I can't say I'll be returning to Gander Green Lane in a hurry.
The game itself was fairly average. Hemel had two great chances to take the lead - the first being from a corner routine that saw three of their players unmarked in front of goal, only for one of them to somehow hook the ball backwards rather than at the goal. The Mackey chance timmy tabby refers to came shortly afterwards, and was followed almost immediately by Sutton taking the lead. There was little of note following that aside from the second goal near the end.
