I was shocked to hear Bruce Elliot indicating on BT Sport that he felt we would be prepared to reinstate a grass surface if we got promoted ; the whole ideology of the club is to embrace the community and that's how it should remain; we and the other clubs with 3G pitches should challenge the football league over what is a most ridiculous rule and an insane punishment for non-compliance. We also now realise what a better standard of football can be achieved on 3G ; the football league are not interested in the benefit to spectators and the wider community but rather in protecting their vested interests. Hold firm Bruce!

I don't believe its a question of challenging the football league. All their member clubs have a right to vote on such matters and they need to be convinced that it is the right way to go. They are going to vote on it later this year i understand.

Well the club aren’t going to reject any chance to go into the football league are they, not making any other statements on that but if you was a chairman on the brink of your club possibly having a chance to go into the FL for the first time, you would take anything to get that chance.....

Nope I wouldn't.
The club has turned down promotion before and I don't think we should be bullied into tearing up the pitch this time around either. The decision to remove the current surface would be a big financial hit, and as has been stated, goes against the community nature of the facilities we have adopted over the last few years. In my view we should be prepared to explore every avenue to challenge the rule about such pitches, given they are used in so many competitions, and at higher levels than the football league.
Glad it's not my decision to make though as I'm sure my position would be considered anathema by many.

I agree with you but it does look like the 3G would go if it was voted no and I would be heavily disappointed because of the benefits it has given the club and of course the community....

Look I get it. The artificial surface has been fabulous for us financially and no question that there is no advantage or disadvantage for the teams playing on it. I remember the often muddy bog we played on through the 80s and 90s so doubtless the quality of the football is better as well.
However if there were a chance of us playing league football then that has to take priority. Furthermore the financial impact of us being relegated under current rules for not having a grass surface with associated hit to sponsorship revenues and occasional TV income plus inevitable loss of many of our players, hit to season ticket and on the day sales etc etc would have a massively detrimental effect on the club.
oh and one last thing - I just prefer watching football on grass........

Hold firm Bruce! Just to point out that the ridiculous rule is in the hands of the Football League's member clubs at this current time, and the insane punishment has been instigated by our own National League. The EFL itself is out of the equation at the moment. Having said that, they should of course have ruled on this years ago.

I believe if you turned down promotion you would set the club back 20 years.

Bullied? Sorry but we knew the rules when we converted the pitch. Whilst it was probably safe to assume the league would follow at some stage (given the higher levels at which it is perfectly acceptable as you point out) and that we wouldn't be putting up what is looking increasingly like a promotion challenge so soon, we have signed an undertaking to take the promotion and play on grass if it comes to it (or be relegated!). The club have been very clear in saying we'd take the promotion IF it comes so not sure there is any decision as such to make (on taking or turning down any promotion).

I'd say that Bruce is saying what needs to be said given the situation as it exists at the moment.
Keep all possibilties open.

I believe if you turned down promotion you would set the club back 20 years. That's hyperbolic nonsense, Delboy. The only thing that would set this club back 20 years is if we lost Dos. Dos would not allow us to be anything other than competitive in the upper echelons of the non-league game.
I’m still hopeful that, at the very least, the draconian punishment of a double relegation will be scrapped before the end of the season.

I actually can't believe how far this club has come to even be thinking of this possibility it's all a bit surreal . Personally I love the pitch and how it's generated so much good - and as supporters years ago we'd spend mornings ringing and ringing that club call number to see if game was on and having the disappointment of games called off(and the phone bill!) it's so nice being confident games are on at home. Ultimately doesnt matter what I think - but having seen the club make decisions for years I am confident that they will do the right thing whatever that is at the time

"Hyperbolic nonsense." Do you honestly believe Dos would stay if we turned it down ? Do you think we would retain as many season ticket holders ? We would be looked upon as a club with no ambition.

People should understand that membership of the National League requires agreement to the rule that a club's ground should be fit for the EFL if they achieve a promotion place. On that basis, I can't imagine for one minute that the VNL will scrap the relegation punishment for clubs which are unable to accept promotion due to the unfitness of their ground. Let's face it, every VNL club has at least one season in the North or South section to get the work done before it becomes an issue. On the same basis, you wouldn't expect Chairman Bruce to say anything other than, in effect, SUFC would comply with the rules pertaining to its membership of the VNL. We must hope that the EFL changes its stance before it becomes an issue for us but, if that does not happen and we cannot mount a successful legal challnge, I'm pretty sure the plastic will go. Dos will not want to turn down the opportunity to test himself in the Football League, nor should any of us.
