Christ, how thick is Gary Owers?!
"The first goal, he's put two minutes up and they score 47 minutes and 50 and he's making some excuse about where 50 seconds comes from."
The number on the board shows a MINIMUM amount of time added on. So if there was 2 minutes 59 seconds, the board would (should) still show 2 minutes. The added time thing has been in place for, what, a decade at least?! Jesus wept.

Every time it's announced, that is twice every match, the announcer always says "The [official] has indicated A MINIMUM of n minutes..." - it's not exactly obscure knowledge!

Broke my record yesterday as I was up for over 24 hours for this trip (actually out for 22 hours) but it was well worth it, eventually.
I note the comment about ref's being able to make a call on a player's intention with regard being off the field; you wouldn't be saying that if you was there last night. The fella didn't appear to know what day it was, where he was or what sport he was meant to be officiating. His interpretation of the laws of the game was quite baffling at times.
U's started well and Byron's lovely finish gave them a lead and they continued to be the better side, Tom B heading just over at the far post.
Then came the first talking point which had the already mildly pissed off Sutton fans (see catering story later) mad with fury. U's claimed the first delivery went out and back in play - not easy for us behind the goal to comment on that. The biggest rick though was the awarding of a corner as the ball was clearly knocked out off a Torquay boot but inexplicably, the ref gave a corner. The corner was partially cleared but with Craig E colliding with the perimeter fence and down off the pitch. The ball comes back in and U's have moved up with two TU players caught. That was the offside claim. The first Torquay player makes no attempt for the ball but jumps into Jamie B while the second heads into an empty net.
The new law may deem them not offside but as KBB asks how can a player who has just collided with the perimeter fence be deemed active? Anyway, no matter it was a/ so obviously not a corner and b/ a foul on Jamie B. U's, and in particular our bench went apoplectic. Know idea how Dos or Bairdy or both weren't sent off for their reaction, albeit justified, suggesting to me the ref may have thought he'd dropped more than a little clanger.
Buoyed by the goal, the home faithful who had been deriding their team's efforts before that got behind them and the home side looked a different proposition. I will say it again, goals change games and that's why the officials have to be better than last night.
U's weathered the storm and were marginally the better side when Torquay attacked down their left and the guy ran into the box but Terell came across to challenge and saw the ball out. Once again the ref gives a corner and TT joins skip in the ref's notebook for stating the bleeding obvious, no doubt. Have to say it was a great finish by Williams but he should never had have the chance.
Then in stoppage time, a bit of heading tennis and Simon Walton powers his header across the 'keeper into the top corner. It was a quality goal and his second from open play in three days. Those London Buses turning up again, it would appear.
Second half was full of effort from both sides but chances were few and far between then as the match headed to its conclusion, a delightful ball gives Barnes a brilliant scoring opportunity but he opts for the "dink" over Jamie B and his effort lands on the roof of the net. Bad miss, that for Torquay gets worse, three minutes later.
Louis John shows a nice bit of skill getting inside and then away from Davis and as he surges into the box Davis brings him down with an ill advised attempt for the ball from behind. For Davis it was his "Phil Neville moment" against Romania in the Euros for Torquay, it may have the same consequences as PN's did for England, only time will tell.
Up steps, skip, fresh from watching his pen against Leeds on the coach screen on the way down. He does exactly the same as he did that famous day. The Torquay fans start pouring out of the ground as the ref re-starts and then blows for full-time, the U's fans (all 71 of us) celebrate the win as the players approached us for the customary #in it together end of match thing.
A tenth (yes that's ten on the grass stuff) away win of the season, phenomenal. A solid U's performance after a long time cramped up on a coach. A first goal for Byron and another for my MotM, Simon Walton.
Gary Owers described the ref's visits (this was his third) to Plainmoor as chaotic. Well mate, it was your team who got the favours last night, so I think chaotic is being kind; I would say his performance was not fitting for the level of football and the integrity of the NL was attacked by him more than having a 3G pitch ever will.
So to the plight of Torquay and their club's lack of respect to the travelling fans last night. Plainmoor is a lovely ground with a very good pitch and the possibility of it gracing the NLS next season is both bizzare and a loss to the NL. but, like so many other clubs in recent years, they appear to have been mis-managed and find themselves in a downward spiral that will need even more than last season's late surge to save them.
The lack of respect was the fact that they failed to open the catering van (apparently they were told we'd only have 15 fans there). By whom one wonders or were the Barrow 13 to blame? The fact that we had over four times that amount resulted in TU's decision to have two ladies and a fella ferry orders from the other end of the ground farcial. Those three TU staff were brilliant though and deserve much praise for their approach to a situation not of their making. It was totally unsuitable though and while we were served surely it must be a NL rule that if you are to segregate a club has to provide proper catering services (my first cup of cha was luke-warm and drunk within a minute or so), irrespective of how many fans may attend? Smacks of a club with excellent facilities in alarming decline.
Fortunately, the last minute winner sweetened TU's policy and the performance of the ref and made for a grand day out.
Hope Johnnie's hand isn't too bad but from one who knows, better to kick the infrastructure in frustration rather than punch it; causes you less damage.
Guiseley, who had a confidence building win last night, next.

That 1st goal is a joke of a decision. The lads gone and made a back for Butler to impede his jump. Like something from WWE tag team.

Another thing after last night's game. Torquay are on 27 points with 11 games remaining and with a -28 goal difference. This means they would have to win every game improving their goal difference at around 4 goals per game to overtake us (only if we lose every game from now on). So they are pretty much the first side in the division that mathematically can't catch us. Guiseley will be the 2nd if they fail to beat us at the weekend (25 points with 12 games to play, giving them a maximum possible points total of 61 points). We can start ticking off those sides, and although this for me has never been in question, we can be mathematically safe by the time we go to Halifax...
Obvious caveat is that I'm not taking into account off-field permutations discussed heavily elsewhere.

Minor nitpick Mark but isn't it 9 wins on the grass stuff and one at Bromley? I've only had about 2 hours sleep so if I don't know what I'm talking about just ignore me!

Didn't want to start a new thread just for this, but we ought to give a reluctant hat tip to Macclesfield. After a particularly dodgy run of four or five games when, for all the tea in China, they looked like they were creaking at the seams, they then pull off two remarkable away wins at Aldershot and Tranmere. Mind you, the Shots did help them out somewhat with a sending-off after just five minutes (one might say Aldershot themselves in the foot! - see what I did there?!). But that 4-1 drubbing they dished out at Prenton Park, I didn’t see that coming at all. Clearly no club is safe from getting absolutely thumped this season.

Although there are strong rumours that Askey is about to up sticks to Grimsby, and it's something that he's refused to deny to the press this week. Their creaking could return...

Tranmere are the experts in big game bottlejobs. Their record in 9 games against fellow top-7 clubs this season is 1 win (at GGL, annoyingly), 3 draws and 5 defeats.
