Your regular reporters will be at the end of season party this evening, and perhaps they can find some clues as to why the party started at half-time. Butler left the field at the interval looking OK, but ..... Hey Pine, I know you say it how it is, and I usually agree with you, but imho the comments about Ross are a bit ott especially since he has been so good for us over the years. He was thrust onto the pitch unexpectedly and had a bad day, that's all Pre match lunch was absolutely fantastic btw. Thanks very much to Jim Good for squeezing us in

It does beg the question of why he was dropped after not putting a foot wrong. It seems pretty likely that it affected his confidence, which is poor man management imo. See Bairdy's interview, in which he said: "Butler's back and groin seized up. He literally could not move". I always feel for goalies who are subbed on. Invariably, their services are only required in exceptional circumstances, so it's particularly difficult for substitute keepers to be mentally and physically prepared. That's why, along with others, I find some of the comments made about Ross' performance to be rather harsh. Yes, some blame should be attached, but not too much. Ross undoubtedly has the strength of character and skill set to bounce back from this, in any event. We need to show him our full support and backing now, especially in light of Butler's injuries.

Result apart, so many positive things from yesterdays performance. Not trying to pretend it didn't happen, but there's no point analysing Ross's mistake . He had brain fart, End of. It doesn't point to any underlying issues as a keeper. He's outstanding at this level and it's an utter 1 off.I thought the effort and all round play were excellent and made for a really enjoyable game. Easty was outstanding at CB and could add a few years to his playing career if he and management move him back there on a more permanent basis. Annoying to lose but can't fault the performance Sh1t happens but we’ve all had days like this and as previously stated when you are thrown into a situation, especially in footy circumstances without the necessary mental awareness, you are immediately below par for a while. But I must say that this was my most enjoyable match this season, the guys played superbly and more than held Orient who looked most lacklustre and hopefully they will not win the league but have to fight in the playoffs to give them even more chance to slag off the National League in which they don’t deserve to be in - ah poor darlings.

Sutton fielded a press-ganged defence so a narrow defeat to the league leaders might be the expected result – but that does not tell the story of what happened. There were no goals in the first half. Some fine tackling by the stand-in defence, Eastmond the pick of them, ensured Sutton restricted Orient to few and hurried chances and worked a few openings themselves. O’s sole good effort on target was palmed away brilliantly by Jamie Butler diving away to his left. Your regular reporters will be at the end of season party this evening, and perhaps they can find some clues as to why the party started at half-time. Butler left the field at the interval looking OK, but the game recommenced with his replacement by some clown in the #1 jersey. Perhaps this was a pilot for a new reality TV show “Strictly Come Keeping”, where members of the public win the chance to replace a professional during the game. There was even a consolation prize today of replacing the 4th official - for a period of non-stop stereo verbal abuse – which somebody won. I would have to give this clown’s make-up team a six for technical merit – their man was a perfect Ross Worner look-alike, but the resemblance ended when he had to keep goal. The second half started brightly for U’s. Orient were obviously nervous – so, egged on by the fans to run at them - Jonah did and unleashed an unstoppable shot high to the keeper’s left. Brisbane Road Déjà vu. 1-0 to the U’s. After 63 years as a paying spectator, I can’t often say I have seen a new event during a professional game but Orient supplied one today. One of their players, injured and about to be stretchered off, was red carded for throwing his boot from a prone position at the ref. I should be writing about O’s simultaneously throwing away a boot and promotion – were it not for the clown. He gave the 10 men a route back into the match when he came to claim a high ball dropping in his area and got nowhere near the ball. It was gently headed over him to exactly where he had been standing. 1-1. That gaffe was as nothing compared to the second. A back pass was rolled to ‘Ross’ (not the real one, obviously) - standing about 3 yards from his left goalpost. It is an easy hoof upfield with 2 O’s forwards closing but 8 yards away. He chose instead to play keepy uppy – failed badly - and in the ensuing scramble the clown and the two forwards all ended up on the rubber. Penalty to O’s 1-2. Sutton’s outfield then lost all discipline. Understandable with that going on behind them but inexcusable – and they did not fashion another attack but collected a few more yellow cards. This post has really got under my skin. How about you get behind the club rather than sit behind your keyboard making snide comments you obtuse, arrogant prat. I thought the team were excellent yesterday, really did us (and themselves) proud and for a keeper in the 5th division of English football the odd error is to be expected. Subbed on into a big game and over the years an excellent servant of our club, these comments are way out of line. Jonah’s goal was superb and I was yet again beaming with pride at the performance of all of them. I celebrated Jonah’s goal next to (unbeknown to me) his mum, who is a lovely lady by the way and was beaming with pride 🙂.

I meant why was Ross dropped in the first place? I see what you mean. Sorry, I thought you were referring to why Butler was subbed off. It's difficult to have two quality keepers in the side and ensure they both have regular game time. I would hesitate to suggest favouring one over the other constitutes poor management for this reason.

More than happy to be corrected - I seem to remember seeing somewhere than when Butler signed his contract it was on the basis thay he was first choice keeper.

People criticising Ross have short memories, yes he made a mistake yesterday ,but what about the fantastic double save a few weeks ago, these things happen in football, next time just kick it off for the corner, would have loved to have won, team of whingers who expected us just to roll over, imo Ross is better than Butler

Ross undoubtedly deserves some criticism for his performance yesterday, he will know that, and will not expect his mistake to be brushed under the carpet, but he has put a lot of credit in the SUFC bank over the years, against which the level of criticism should be tempered

Not disagreeing with anything that's been said as I like Ross and he has saved us more points than he has cost us but just think Pinewalkers attempted a bit of humour that has gone wrong. To summarise it was a clown who had been made up to look like Ross as it clearly wasn't the real Ross.

One can only assume that Pinewalker's account has been hacked, because the real Pinewalker would surely never make such a half-witted, crass observation.

Remember this is the same poster who accused us of time wasting last week at BW based on a comment by a biased radio commentator. I wouldn't get ones knickers in a twist about it.

Anyone who just watched the Liverpool, Chelsea match will have seen one of the finest players in the world miss two sitters that if netted may have ended LFC's title hopes. Two mistakes from a world class player. Difference is when a 'keeper makes a misjudgement, by very nature of that position, they generally lead to a goal. If it can happen to the world's best it can happen to a NL 'keeper. I doubt anybody will try and make a joke out of it and use the word "clown" in describing Eden Hazard anytime too, so Pinewalker's poor attempt to disguise what he thought of Ross W is totally unwarranted. Leave the clown references to the officals not one of our players who makes uncharacteristic errors.
Tough on Ross W having to come on for the unlucky Jamie B who made the only real save of a first half that saw both sides test each others defence with no reward.
Second half was much of the same but Jonah A, who saved his best for Orient, and on the day the goal of the season award was announced, drove forward to hit a fantastic strike into the far top corner. It came out of the blue and I didn't see Orient scoring until the free-kick that saw our only real defender, on the deck when the ball came in. If you choose to come you have to make it and Ross W didn't. After that both sides looked for a winner but neither looked like getting it.
The red card for Dayton may have been unkind on the part of the ref but if you chuck your boot at him I don't see much else the ref could do. The tackle was strong but timed and sometimes, even in these days of the sanitised game we watch, an injury can occur from a decent challenge. Ask, Harry Kane. Of course, the O's fans who spent most of the match moaning as if they're players were an endangered species a situation not helped by a couple of their players rolling around after a challenge as if maimed. It was interesting that the two players who did have to go off just sat there, hardly moving, a good sign that their problem is real.
Down to ten men, Orient held a line on the halfway line and made it difficult for U's to progress forward and from another back pass came the penalty and undeserved defeat. Certainly seen better sides than Orient but to win any league you need a bit of luck on the way and they got that yesterday. I think they may have to up their game when they go to Solihull.
As for U's a fine effort considering we had just one recognised defender on the pitch and then lost the 'keeper at h-t. Craig E was immense alongside Dale B and Tom B is deserving of huge credit for his performance at right back. The NLP goes on about LO's character but says little about us. They gave the ref 5 suggesting the reporter has jumped on the Orient bandwagon. That was one of the better refereeing performances I have seen at GGL, ignoring the O's histrionics on the pitch and terraces until a flurry of card late on. Don't always like this ref as he comes across as a strutting peacock but yesterday was the best he has shown. Also thought the young lady running the line had a good afternoon and put some of her male colleagues who have patrolled the touchline this season to shame - not difficult mind.
Speaking to a couple of O's fans after they thought U's were the better side. I thought it was an even contest with both sides trying to play football (ask Carl, he could tell you all about it!).
Really must be the end of U's play-off chances now but to see a Sutton team missing eight players at the start and another by h-t perform like they did against the league leaders was very heartening.
Wrexham next. Gets easier doesn't it?
