No they probably didn't but if you read my first paragraph the chances of contracting this on a football pitch are minute. I wish I could believe that, but where have all these players been that caught it? Mass gatherings? And then when one person has it, it seems to spread very easily. At football you have to be in close proximity to other people if you want to do your job properly. I can just understand why other leagues cancelled their fixtures and can understand why some players, management and staff (not just at Sutton) would think not cancelling the NL was a bad idea. You have a very good point. Where do they get it ? Can they pass it on ? Of course they can but passing it on whilst playing football would be highly unlikely. Having a beer in the bar afterwards. Much more likely. Look its going to spread and the government want to protect the most vulnerable but they have taken a different approach to most other nations..

Much more likely. I am not an expert in infectious diseases, and don't know how likely or unlikely it is to be passed from player to player. But what I do know is that the fear is real, you cannot just wave that away even if one element of society think they are wrong or not.

What about their families. Who do they see on a regular basis? I can’t fault players for having concerns about playing considering many other leagues had decided to call all games off. This is not about fit and healthy individuals this is about those at risk and trying to pass it to them. We still don’t fully understand this but underlying health issue or health deteriorating with age are reportedly more at risk. Fans had the choice to go, players didn’t really have the choice to play. I see your point. But this only really carries weight if (at the same time) all of the players are also finding themselves able to avoid gyms, pubs, clubs, all public transport, supermarkets and any other public workplaces they might be obliged to go to. I take no pleasure in that, but is that not the case? I get that but again we don’t know what they are doing and also with such a large proportion of leagues deciding not to play games I can understand a bit of concern. Personally I chose not to go to the game. It was easy for me to avoid the gym and I also avoided, bars and clubs and supermarkets this weekend. I made that choice until we get further information from Public Health England. I will go to work tomorrow but will not attend Meet the Manager, but that is a personal choice. I’m also lucky that I drive to work so avoiding public transport is easy. I have my own reasons for this and believe me it is not for my own health that I have concerns.

I think that is the point, we just don’t know. Oh I agree, and I think we will see us come a bit more in line with other nations sooner, maybe not as extreme. But again why did the NL and a few other leagues take a different approach to to the PL, EFL and some other lower leagues? And I believe the next round of fixtures and maybe even Tuesday night will be postponed, so why not Saturday. Did the NL want the publicity? I certainly don’t blame the club for the game going ahead they had direction from the league, that is all they can do.

Everyone has to make their own decisions about what they attend outside of their working lives. Not going into work is somewhat different and probably something you can't avoid. The government will probably ban events from next weekend with crowds of over 500 but we shall have to see if the National League stop sooner.Meeting tomorrow i guess to ascertain if mid week fixtures can be fulfilled.

I believe that Andy K posted a link which gave the National League's full statement of intention regarding the Saturday matches. I can't recall which thread it was in, though.

[/quote] Found it. www.thenationalleague.org.uk/national-league-statement-61551Doesn’t really say much other than they are following the governments advice. So I guess we will just see that continue after any updates tomorrow.

It included something about the financial stability of the clubs being a factor plus 'being between a rock and a hard place'. Maybe Andy knows?

The Northern Premier League issued a statement which mentioned club finances. Andy posted a link to it on page 4 of this thread. But to save you searching for it, here's what it said.
The NPL board has decided that all games will go ahead this weekend.
Further to our communication of yesterday regarding the Coronavirus crisis, and following the Premier League and EFL deciding to pause the season until April 9th , the NPL has today been in discussion with the National, Southern and Isthmian Leagues to try and agree a common approach, but this did not prove possible.
The FA has today stated that it is each League’s decision as to what approach it wishes to take, so each league at Steps 3 & 4 will do what it believes best for its member clubs. Accordingly, and in common with the National League, the NPL’s board has decided that all matches will go ahead this weekend, with future fixtures being reviewed on Monday 16th March. Our primary concern, as always, is to protect the financial stability of our 62 clubs. This means playing as many games as we can, so long as clubs wish to do so. This is not contrary to the League’s and clubs’ duty of care considerations to players, officials or supporters but, in a season where clubs have been severely impacted by weather-related postponements, the NPL board believes that pausing the season right now would prove disastrous for many clubs.
The situation is changing daily, so our approach to Covid-19 must be flexible, recognising the very genuine concerns around the health of players, officials and supporters. The NPL has consistently urged clubs to follow government advice, which is that football matches should go ahead as planned for now. Having carefully weighed up all options, and mindful that we are between a rock and a hard place on this issue, all NPL matches will therefore go ahead as planned this weekend unless a club is directly affected by players, referees or volunteers who are self-isolating or have serious concerns.
Clubs have been issued with further guidance and instruction.

Ah, thank you, AA! I got the right quote about the wrong League. My bad. I agree with the sentiments, though.

You all beat me to it!
I get the feeling that the NPL statement could just as easily have applied to the National League, especially N & S where teams like Tonbridge could go bust in days if there are no income streams coming in for a few weeks.
I also agree with the sentiment of the NPL statement. The leagues do have a duty of care for clubs and this includes financially.
