Admittedly far too early to make any meaningful observations, but here goes…
Yes, I too thought that Rose kicks far too high, thus looses length and gives the oppo time to adjust.
Also agree that it is no use Wilson receiving the ball with his back to the goal (doesn’t hold the ball well and gets knocked off too easily). He needs to be running onto Omar’s flicks and any through balls where his speed and build play to his undoubted strengths.
A stop-start disjointed game, lacking in creativity.
But, as I said, early days…

If Rose doesn't learn to kick a football we are in for a very long season. Aside from the silly back pass he was very solid under pressure but the difference in distribution between him and deano is going to be worth 5-10 points. His odd high kicks into the wind put a hell of a lot of pressure in us second half.
If not for the two injuries I don't see us not winning that game. As others have said, fairly lucky to get a draw in the end. How they missed that chance early in the second half, God only knows. But that's football. We should've been 2-0 up moments before goodliffe got hurt and Newport equalized.
Can't fault the effort. Was a highly physical game and as usual the referee got no help from his assistants. The worst error had to be the one which went our way. Not sure which Sutton player cleaned out their wing back but ref didn't even give a free kick. Still, seen much worse refs.
Ground is looking good but these pylons have to be moved. We've spent zero quid on players, is it too much to ask not to have floodlight pylons ruining the views in so many places? Guess we'll have to wait until next season to get a decent view unless you're an away fan or grandstander.
Love the new retro shirts though! bigup to Gareth for those.

Re the programmes, there were three people selling today I believe. Andy as mentioned, with a roving brief, a lady at the Collingwood Road end, and Gareth in the shop. The other gentleman who normally does the park side was working, so they were short.

Newport very physical and seem to have reinvented their style for this season. I’m not sure they have enough quality up top to challenge (as the squad currently stands) on this albeit early look but they’ll be solid enough you’d think. Terrible goal to concede from our point of view. Not great to lose Goody and Will to injuries, we really have to hope nothing serious.
Eastmond was the best player on the park today I thought, comfortably.
Keeper looked solid enough but agree his kicking is pretty poor, 2nd half hanging big pitching wedges miles in the air so it’s coming back at us gave our front men zero chance aerially.
Think the ground is really getting there. Fan zone is a good idea and I’m sure will work well, especially on the warmer days. The club have done a magnificent job to get the ground to this point. It’s really transforming.
Agree on the embarrassing element we have attracted in the crowd. Tired, humourless, unoriginal songs aimed at antagonising the opposition just isn’t Sutton United Football Club (historically). Pathetic really.

Sutton were the better side until the injuries. Omar Bugiel latched on to a rebound off the crossbar from a fine shot by Wilson to volley us in front.
After one jump to head the ball Ben landed with his leg locked straight. This jarred it and he played on for a while but had to go off. He has done the same before so a bit of landing practice with the knees bent would help. Immediately Newport equalised with an unchallenged header by Omar Bugle! [you can't make this up]. It seemed neither Coby Rowe, who had just come on, nor Louis John were marking the scorer. Will Randall had been sending in dangerous crosses so his, the second injury replacement, tilted the match towards Newport and in the end I was happy with 1 point.
Comments elsewhere say Wilson cannot play as a back-to-goal target man. I said that last season, but to be fair I thought he was better today in that role than I had seen previously. Nevertheless, why the keeper and backs were aiming long balls forward to Wilson rather than Bugiel only they can answer - it looked daft.
We have lost Tanto, David and Dean - all major contributors to last season's dizzying success. I think we can find replacements on loan for the first two but I worry that the management think Rose is an adequate replacement for Buzanis - that is yet to be proven.

A good point about Rose. Having seen him in PSF and today I am not sure. He has to sort out his kicking.Hopefully the goalie coach can work on this with him. Deano was able to vary his kicking ( in hight and distance) Talking of Deano. He and David were on the bench for their new clubs but were not used.

Have to disagree with all the negativity towards Rose. It’s the first game of the season and, pretty much all players looked a little rusty on occasions. Let’s let the team settle and I’m sure things will look different in the coming games.

As said a stop start scrappy game today, its difficult to take much from one match, but added together with the PSF's, I think we need to look at the strike partnership. I think we need someone else to come in and give some more options?

I think we need someone else to come in and give some more options? Our strikers don't generally last 90 minutes. We need them to just get used to each others strengths and weaknesses. I feel that Newport were over-physical and the referee and assistants (Park side at least) were weak. Why do referees allow themselves to get crowded and take continuous verbals?

Of course we can't read much into the first game of the season (especially one that starts in July 🙄), but, on today's evidence, both these sides have regressed since they last met. This was an undistinguished, attritional match, in which a game of fluid, attacking football only occasionally threatened to break out. Losing two players to injury before half-time hardly helped our cause.
Once again, Omar opened our account on the opening day. It was perhaps inevitable that the other Omar B would equalise. Matt won't be happy with the way that goal was conceded via a simple back-post header, just after Ben G had been forced off and replaced by Coby.
We do have a point more than we did at this stage last season.

i thought House looked a better keeper in the pre season friendlies i saw but happy to give Rose the benefit of the doubt.
Not sure why he picked up that back pass though as i saw no deflection.
Honestly i thought it was a dreadful game but at least we didn't lose !

I remember at this stage last season the knives were out for Bouzanis in a very similar way.
How did that turn out?
After losing Randall and Goodliffe we looked like a mid table side playing against another mid table side.
I'd take mid table any day of the week. We need to manage our own expectations and realise that as a club we will probably have the smallest player budget in the 92. Which will partially explain the signings we've made.
But then again we have Matt Gray. If anyone can be successful in those situations, it's him.
We're already 1 point ahead of last season.
