Shocking. The fact that we couldn't break down a side two divisions below at home is extremely worrying. I could see easily see us getting sucked into a relegation dogfight. The teams below us will all strengthen in Jan and every side and their groundsman's wife know how we are going to play. We are so predictable and we cannot score goals. Somehow we need to find alternative ways of playing when plan A isn't working. Whether that requires different personel, a different mindset, or both, I do not know. We can bemoan bad luck, injuries and keepers' performances all we like but if we cannot score goals we will be sucked towards the trapdoor and it might be another 123 years before we get back through it. To be fair, that wasn't the case in the first half. We were peppering their goal. Needless to say Matts half time team talk didn't work. We won't be sucked in. That performance today won't be repeated.

Thank you fborofan, appreciated.
As we gather more supporters in our rise up the pyramid, such disappointments will gather criticism and frustration - it is just something that goes with the territory. Being a club that now charges a pretty penny to watch the games (although highly reasonable imo) there does need to be an expectation that spectators want value for money. If you spend £20 Togo and see a film and dislike it, chances are that you won’t watch the directors next effort.
The modern day supporter is a many faceted beast. For every loyal, die-hard there will be a transient visitor that proclaim a brief allegiance.
That’s football…
An interesting season lies ahead. Mid-table mediocrity might be as good as it will get, but, hey, that’s what being a supporter means. Rough with the smooth. Joy with the pain. Come on you U’s!

Just seen Sam hart’s interview, how many times do the players say we must bounce back, it’s the same every week, bit frustrating. ⚽️⚽️⚽️

Why were two goalies on the bench? Was it to make a full subs bench and avoid a fine? The bench was filled with all the remaining fit players at the club. Matt did say that in his preview.

Is there any reason why Kendall and/or Tope didn’t start today? All well and good saying players aren’t taking chances but it’s been happening all season yet these lads barely get the chance from the start Clearly Matt believes they are not good enough. Certainly not better than the starting two.

Bonfire night the last time we played on bonfire night in the 1st RD of the cup (MARK - can tell me if I am incorrect) we scored 6! So….🎈⚽️ SU 6 v 0 Farnborough See you all ggl 👋 Congratulations to Farnborough - and apologies for the lack of respect shown to them by some posters on this board. Perhaps the saddest thing about this result from a Sutton perspective is that it isn't really a surprise. Farnborough came into this game on better form than us - and both sides contained some players of Tier 6 quality. If anything positive is to come from this result, I hope that Matt is given some funds in January to invest in the quality of player needed to keep us in the EFL (although this has been made less likely by missing out on the income that would have come from a run in the FA Cup). If not, we could be meeting Farnborough again in a league match sooner rather than later). DAVEP - hope all’s well with you. I don’t usually respond to posts - but your insinuation that I was showing Farnborough a lack of respect is mis-guided. I have never predicted SU to draw a match let alone lose one and if you have followed my predictions for the last few seasons you will quickly realise that it’s all a bit of fun and frolics. Football is fun and it’s the least important part of my life. I shall carry on predicting and I shall carry on having fun and smiling. When you see me next ggl come and say hello and you’ll soon realise that football is fun for me. Have a merry evening - DAVEP 👋🎈⚽️

So are you saying that you were wrong about Wilson and Kouassi partnership up front would lead to a hatful of goals? Kouassi played well, should of scored and caused them problems, but he is only 1 player, as a team today the 2nd half performance was woefull. You were watching a different game from me then. Hardly won a header. Only Ward, Wilson and Easty can come out with any credit

I suppose now we know what it feels like. To be giantkilled in the FAC 1st round. Yes, there have been some disasters when we was a non league club but today was different.
When he arrived today, I had a chat with Jack Turner and he said how he always likes playing here. Not surprised, as he always seems to have a great game at GGL and today was no different. Got a bit lucky with his first save but after that equal to everything.
To be honest at ht while not over confident I thought we would go on and score but as that second half wore on it was becoming apparent that it wasn't going to be. Loads of the ball but not enough quality on it.
Should have had the match won by ht but as we know to pull off an FA Cup shock a team needs to ride its luck and then take the chance when it arrives. Farnborough did.
Thinking back to the opening day against Newport we conceded immediately after Ben G had gone off and that was repeated today immediately after Coby had left the scene. A poor goal to allow the ball to travel that far and no one picking up at the back post. The second was irrelevant with regards to the result but from our perspective wasn't great either.
As for the remark about Adam L, hindsight eh? When he played for Dartford in the 2nd qual, Harry, Alistair and John B were all fit. You would have to be some clever bastard to expect them all to be injured from there on.
With the squad desperately low on numbers, Matt needed all to be firing today but sadly that wasn't the case. Not a lack of effort but the application just wasn't there.
All this plan a and b stuff is irrelevant when you're missing nigh on half the squad. Really missed Omar today and for that you can thank the idiot at Stockport last week.
One on here thinks Kylian is the answer but he is a very young and inexperienced player. He certainly has come on leaps and bounds but at the moment for every second half at Northampton you will probably get a less profitable performance. I thought he did ok today but some seem to expect him to turn it on all the time. It ain't happening....yet.
Best of luck to Farnborough. A bit smash and grab but that's the FA Cup. It fell for them today as it has so often for U's when we have been in their position.
Easty was superb today, especially in the first half. But he can't do it all and unfortunately, as stated previously, there were a few too many off days.
Staying in L2 is the priority and with the squad as it is at the moment, the next few weeks will be very difficult. The fans need to hang in there; this is no time for smart arses who think they have the answers to our current predicament. They haven't. We need some players back, it is simple as that.

I gave a lift to a couple of Sunday League managers from Farnborough today. The Sutton dugout would have been something they were used to: 2 keepers and a fitness coach making up the numbers. If excuses are sought for this upset - there it is.
Farnborough were uncertain in front of their own goal and it was difficult to believe U's could not force the ball in during one of the first half goalmouth scrambles. Other posters have criticised our attacking play, especially the wingers' performances. They do seem to be stuck in rut.
I don't know what Matt said at half time but it was noticeable during play that he and Jason were both yelling at once, sometimes different things to different players. Today I could not see anyone on the pitch taking any notice.
"Swivel" was today's buzzword - anyone know what that meant?
Sods Law of football consequences kicked in at the death. U's brought off their hobbling tallest defender and replaced him with the shortest player on the books. The next long throw into our box was not cleared and the loose ball poked in. Just the sort of chance we had been spurning.

Concerning your last paragraph. Can you guarantee that!!Andy Barring the stupidity of that comment, I'm very happy to donate £50 to the charity of your choice if we end up in the bottom two this season. That's of course if you donate £50 to the charity of my choice if we stay up. You taking the bet?

Halfimet and os made some good comments on their last posts. Terrier also made a Good comment regarding the use of subs. Some of which I have found baffling in previous matches. You also think we should close our training facility and have decided it's not fit for purpose. I'd bet you've never been to it either. So it doesn't surprise me you find a lot of things baffling, including use of substitutes. Especially so as literally Matt does the same thing every game - on 70 odd minutes, changes the 2 strikers, and then occasionally a winger or a player who can't do a full 90. It's hardly rocket science. Whether that's the right thing to do week in, week out and being so predictable is something that's obviously up for debate.

We had eight players missing today (five injured, one suspended, two ineligible), plus Coby Rowe was forced off late in the game, but we still should have had enough quality to get through to the second round. And in the first half it looked as if we would, Farnborough keeping us out through defending that veered from decent to desperate. Matt's half-time talk must have been "keep on like that and the breakthrough will come".
Unfortunately we and it didn't. As the game progressed the confidence seemed to seep out of our players. Further chances came, but our attempts to convert them into goals increasingly lacked conviction.
Farnborough dug in and waited for their decisive opportunity, which eventually arrived from a long throw in the 86th minute. Did somebody mention that we tend to concede late goals? And there was even another one to come. But by then the chance of a comeback had all but evaporated.

On another day we could have been 5 or 6 goals up at half time. Don't think anyone played badly but there was a lack of composure in front of goal. We need to be more clinical and also attack the many crosses we put in the opposition box.
The worst thing about today and i'm surprised no one has mentioned this is the loss of prize money for not going through.
Where were Thomas & Neufville today?
