TBH, the 'quality' of what is on offer is relative. I think had Billy seen all of the 2007/2008 relegation season, he'd have given up watching the game altogether, let alone Sutton! Sometimes, the football last season was admittedly basic. But then again, so was that dished up by the majority of opponents. Only Dover, Staines & Hendon readily spring to mind as consistently trying to play decent stuff. The rest were typical of the sort of NL sides you get these days (and have done for the last 10 years or so) where they're big & 'orrible and try to give as little away as possible. The sides of 20 years ago were more entertaining as the football was properly semi-pro. Sure the lads got paid, but in a lot of cases, it was pocket money on top of proper jobs. And a load drank\smoked. Back then, it was a hobby you got paid for and If you were lucky (and that good), you got a move to a professional club and lived the dream of doing nowt but play football and get paid for it. It's not about that any more. Now, with the money being splashed out these days at this sort of level, being a 'semi-pro' footballer is a genuine career alternative to the football league. And as such, you'll find that clubs, management and players are going to take it a bit more seriously. And that sadly involves getting results, not entertaining.

Going back to gate prices, I think maybe they are steep. For example, I managed to get a ticket for a Saturday's racing at Silverstone for a tenner a few weeks ago; admittedly there were no big races, but still good, and for a full day. If the prices have to be soo high to keep the club in a good financial position then fine but otherwise I defo think they should be reduced, it would help get more punters in.

I think the club can charge what it likes for league matches as the gate money is not shared although its not the same for cup matches when you are not allowed to cut the normal entrance price. This is what causes arguments as the club cannot even give incentives such as half price admission etc even when only a handful turn up for games like the Ryman league cup. The question is if gate prices were halved would twice as many turn up and I don't think they would. The best way forward has to be incentives to get people in the ground for the first time and the club is doing that and as you can see from some of last season's gates it's starting to work.

I don't mind paying a tenner for league games. The cup games are a different matter, especially if what is tantamount to a reserve team is representing Sutton United.
I can see The Yardbirds round there for a tenner...............................

I have to agree with the comments about a tenner being too expensive for this level of football. Whilst I do accept what OS says about 'halving it wouldn't double the gate' I think more reasonable prices would help.
I'm not having a pop at the club BTW, as I realise there is a league minumum we have to charge etc etc etc!

The league minimum charge for the Premier Division for last season was £6, as specified in League Rule 21. This allows for variations for concessions deemed appropriate by the club, but also states that the charge for entry must be the same for both home and visiting supporters.
I think the cheapest entry price last season was £8.50 at Canvey Island. Many clubs charged £9 (we were one, although we did try allowing Under-16s in free) but a good number chared a tenner. Some even charged extra to sit down, which I think is a liberty is you've been relieved of £10 just to get in!

The last game i saw before this season that has just ended was around 1996.I remember it was the week after Beckham scored from the halfway line at Selhurst Park.
All i remember about the game was that it was a high scoring match,Sutton had a big, burly centre forward and a left back with fair hair who had played for Orient and was the best player on the pitch.
I'm sure we paid 9 quid to get in...........................................

Vansittart & Everitt respectively I suspect.
Well, if it was 9 quid just shows that inflation stalled at GGL well before the rest of the UK!!

No, it wasn't a pop at Sutton. I compiled a list of entry charges last season and some clubs had about five different prices! I didn't make the first team match to GGL due to my pregnant fiancee but I did attend two Reserve matches and two youth games at your gaff where no seating charge was applied.
