markf, to be fair the ref should've got his book out more and compared to most in our league we don't dive at all! Delboy, our wages aren't that big, we are full time but Eastleigh(our local rivals) are giving players 1k a week, often more, some of our players are part-time, one loanee-No 11, and a few on a non-contract basis trying to earn contracts after injuries. I think the average wage in the squad is roughly £300 a week. Our squad is very small, 20 inc our manager and assistant and our captain has been out injured for nearly the whole of this season.

Maybe not compared with what Eastleigh were paying but you have to pay decent wages to be full time.Being full time in the conference is madness but fulltime in conference south is beyond belief on crowds averaging some 700.

I wasn't there today but from general comments it was a close game with the home side grinding out a narrow victory. As frustrating as it is, it shows how far our team has come in the last few months and its no disgrace going down 1-0 at the league leaders. I saw the B/Wood match and in truth we were second best all evening, but we have improved since then and I doubt it would be the same game if we played it this Tuesday?
Salisbury were roughly where we are now this time last season, just putting together a full time (if I can call it that) squad. I am not sure how different our 2 regimes are but Salisbury are showing that the approach works and you do need a season to get it right. Farnborough are another side who have showed improvement this term developing a young squad.
I think we are still lacking that clinical finish which sees you win games when you don't have that many chances, the teams who win the league find that goal from somewhere as Salisbury did today. I can't believe just how tight this league is after 20 odd games, Dorchester in the drop zone can make a playoff spot if they win their 4 matches in hand over WSM. While Staines in 11th look in trouble just 3pts above Dorc's having played 7 games more.

Didn't mention diving, stated that your players went down easily. There is a difference. You're right, he could have. When you lot were all calling Marvin Williams a cheat, your fella had grabbed hold of him because he knew his header back was too weak. Unfortunately for us the ref didn't have a good view and the lino bottled it. But hey, I wasn't going to mention that, indeed didn't but felt I should after your post.

We've now played all of the top six in the Conference South. I'd say Salisbury looked the tightest defensively of any of those, as we struggled to get any shots on goal, although Rivs did hit the outside of a post. But the Whites had an off day in attack, relying on a heavily deflected own goal to win the match. Jamie White squandered three decent opportunities to score, although that was about the sum total of their chances. 1-0 to them was probably about right on the balance of play.
It was a fairly clean game, although I did think their no.10 (Fitchett) went down rather easily.
This was our seventh league defeat of the season, as many as we suffered during the whole of last season.

markf, I agree there was a bit of holding yesterday by our defenders(unusually actually) but then there was also holding by yours.

Like you , i don't go to all the games but it saddens me that people are happy to see games end in a nil nil draw , especially having travelled a long distance. Having first watched Sutton United in 1965 i believe i am quite entitled to express an opinion. I have no problem with your personal abuse and name calling at me but you really should try and temper your language. Your analogy regarding Salisbury players going down was most distasteful , please remember there are ladies and youngsters reading these posts. That , along with your recent abuse of an opposing player is all a bit sad especially considering your age. All that said may i wish you peace , tranquility , goodwill and lots more Sutton United programmes in 2013. Cheers Bill

Cheers Bill I would be very happy if we got a 0-0 draw yesterday. The team played well and I was proud of their commitment and skill. Unfortunately Salisbury were just a tad better than us on the day.

You can pesonally abuse me by insulting my life choice but can't take it when I give it back. Put up or shut up is the phrase I think Billy.
If the forum mods don't like my analogy then they can remove it. I give my opinion as you do. The diffeence is I actually attend matches which is more than you do, so yes I am better informed than you with regards to the present goings on than you are. I may only go back to 1969 but I know I've seen far more Sutton matches than you have.
You live on some level of sarcasm (on here anyway). Me, I'm just a little more blunt than you. Thanks for the NY greeting, personally, I couldn't give a toss how yours works out, it ain't that high on the list of my priorities Billy.

Also interesting to see the continuing free fall at Eastleigh. I know they've cut the playing staff and we've benefitted from that but they must still be bleeding hard cash as crowds fall and overpaid players fail to perform. Totally unsustainable. Could well be the next basket case. Of course the leagues tight and a few decent results can get you moving but who'd have called them as a relegation zone club as the new year gets underway when they were splashing the cash last summer?

Back in August the Spitfires were many peoples' tips for the Conference South title. Now they find themselves 2nd from bottom, although, such is the tightness in the table, they're only seven points below 7th-placed Farnborough. They'd haul themselves out of the relegation zone (and above us) if they beat Billericay at the Silverlake on Tuesday evening. A run of wins could take any of the pack up to the fringes of the play-offs.

For the record, one of the best games I saw last season was our 0-0 in the play off 2nd leg at Welling - It was a cracking game - games can be great, even if there are no goals.

One of our greatest performances was hundreds of miles away at the Riverside where we held Middlesbrough 0-0 for over 100 mins. To me that remains better then the Coventry performance. Sorry Ayrsome Park not so plush in them days.
