After the strangeness of not playing on an August Bank Holiday Monday in a regular season, we're off to make our debut in another new cup competition. Aside from it being a new competition and how much we'd love to register our first win of the season, there is a financial incentive to do well, with (going on 2020's figures) £10k for a win, £5k for a drawn match (which of course goes to penalties) and getting through to the next round giving us £20k. Doing well in this competition could give us a nice leg up to help maintain our income, especially with 2 home ties v Crystal Palace and AFC Wimbledon. The competition has rules about which players can or can't play, so even if we wanted to, we'd be unable just to put out a totally different side to Saturday. The rules are as follows: Minimum of four qualifying outfield players in their starting XI. A qualifying outfield player was one who met any of the following requirements: - Any player who started the previous or following first-team fixture.
- Any player who was in the top 10 players at the club who had made the most starting appearances in league and domestic cup competitions that season.
- Any player with forty or more first-team appearances in their career.
- Any player on loan from a Premier League club or any EFL Category One Academy club.
A club could play any eligible goalkeeper in the competition. This means at very least we will see 4 of the following : Barden, Milsom, John, Goodliffe, Eastmond, Ajiboye, Beautyman, Wilson, Boldewijn. (who all started the last game), plus Davis, Randall and Dundas, all of whom have played over 40 times for the club. No Bugiel as he is on international duty. Brad House is also eligible to play as the rules don't include goalkeepers. Remember it's a 730, not 745 kick off tonight.

Team composition rules apply to the Crystal Palace U21 side as well:
7.8.1 at least six of the starting eleven players named on the Team Sheet are players who were aged under 21 as at the 30th June in the year in which the Season concerned commenced; and
7.8.2 no more than two players who:
(i) are aged 21 or over; and
(ii) have made 40 or more appearances in a First Team Fixture (either in the starting elven or as a playing substitute) in each case as at the 30th June in the year in which the Season concerned, shall be named on the Team Sheet.
So IF Palace really wanted to push it (they won't) looks like you're allowed 2 VERY experienced players (for example club captain Luka Milivojevic hasn't played yet this season, but it is possible we might want to give him minutes ahead of getting back to the 1st team)........ and then another 3 who are over 21 but who have played under 40 senior appearances.
In reality, it will be most of Palace's "under 23" side - Roles, Rich-Baghuelou and Dreher play for the U23's but are 22 years old, but you won't see the likes of Scott Banks who is away with Scotland U21's anyway.

I won't see any of them. I don't see why we should be used to give experience to Premier team youngsters, nor why I should pay to see it. I can't remember when I last deliberately did not watch a Sutton match, but tonight I'll be at Tooting & Mitcham v SCR.

Apart from when we've played other U21 teams in friendlies of course, and if we played Crystal Palace in the SSC in the last 20 odd years. I'm watching it as it's a Sutton first team game and the chance of winning £10k tonight outweighs any negatives of giving experience to Premier team youngster, some of which could end up on loan with us later in the season.

Am I right in thinking it's all pay tonight even if a ST holder?
If so, I'm probably being stupid, but having problems purchasing on-line. On the "Get tickets" page there are three options:
Main Stand Home General Admission Papa John's promotion
I wish to stand so click on "Home General Admission" but nothing happens apart from parts of the ground being shaded differently.

Not a competition I can get on board with either. Until such time as the EFL listen to supporters, and the overwhelming view that B teams are an abomination where first team competitions are concerned, that will remain the case. I don’t hold out much hope that the desperate financial state of clubs in the EFL will allow the PL bribe to be waved away any time soon, despite the empty stands.

I had the same problem. Eventually solved after I (I think) discovered that, although I was registered, the system had not registered all my details ( date of birth and post code). I know that makes no sense as a reason but it didn't work before and it did after.

Really sad to read Sutton fans not wanting to support the team. Do we expect our team to not give it their all because it's only the pizza cup and not one of 46 league games? I'll be there tonight having travelled all afternoon to get there. And I'm going to enjoy it too!

It's not about not supporting the team at all. There's a fear that if crowds in this competition creep up gradually as the B team boycott wanes, it will serve as a back door to justify allowing Premier League clubs to place their reserve teams in the football pyramid. I think it's insulting to our club to have to face these B teams purely for the purposes of their development, and so will be boycotting the competition. Tonight is the first game I've missed in years (Covid aside) despite living 100 miles away for the last 3 seasons, which shows you how strongly I and many others feel about this.
I still hope the team win and progress through the rounds. It's the competition I'm boycotting, not the club.

I'll be there tonight having travelled all afternoon to get there. And I'm going to enjoy it too! I will always support the team and wish them well tonight. I expect them to give their all because first and foremost they are Sutton players, they are also professional and trying to retain their place or break into the side. It’s the competition I do not support. PL teams have bought their way in, they’re not welcome as is very clear from competition attendances. Would I go to a final at Wembley? Yes probably because my principles only go so far 😂. In all honesty probably not a decision I’ll ever need to make, but at that stage I’d be cutting my nose off to spite my face if I didn’t see us play at Wembley.

Even game so far although we've had the most chances. Pitch looks a lot better too!

Well, regardless of the B teams issue (and I agree that it is an issue) it was good for us to get a win, tonight.
Well done, boys. First of many.
