There have been some posts in this thread about Milsom & left-back. I am reluctant to single out players about defeats but having been a left-back in my playing career may I suggest you look at the Crawley highlights. Wherein the left-back was Sam Hart #42. I have rarely seen a more inept display in that role. There is a huge vacant channel inside Hart and outside the left-side central defender. Omari Patrick is not tracking back to help - but I don't know if he was charged with doing so - maybe not. I will make a prediction. If Salford aren't managed by a dummy they will have picked up on this weakness. So if the Sutton lineup is unchanged Salford will attempt to attack down this channel. That is very harsh on Sam Hart. He was exposed particularly in the second half and had their players running at him. In the FL Paper, for what it's worth, he was given our highest mark out of 10 and I would argue he was indeed our best player over the 90. Hart must have had a storming game in the 87 minutes not in the highlights if he was the Sutton MoM after consideration of this defending. He is supposed to be marking Darcy #10. First goal Hart is standing directly behind Darcy not behind and inside so Hart cannot stop the pass reaching Darcy nor his return pass inside which sets up the goal. Second goal Darcy is the player 'in motion' running left to right before the free kick, Hart does not track Darcy and cannot get near enough to block the goal creating centre. Third goal Darcy skins Hart for pace on the outside and centres for a tap in.

In Sam Hart's defence, I'd say he gets forward well and is an excellent crosser of the ball. But I have to agree that he is suspect defensively, and, when he's playing, our opponents tend to target our left flank, where Omari Patrick, a terrific attacking player, doesn't seem keen on tracking back.

Hartlepool and Rochdale both changed their managers during the first two months of last season, but, despite some improvement in results, still got relegated. Harrogate stuck with their manager and stayed up.Simon Weaver did a fine job For anyone interested, here's a comparison of where they were after 10 games compared with us now: Harrogate had accrued 7 points compared with Sutton's 4. In doing so, they'd scored 6 goals with the U's netting twice as many. However, Harrogate had conceded a dozen whilst we've let in twice as many. Clean sheets: Town 3 United 0. It's perhaps not unfair to add that Harrogate had played fewer of the top teams. Quite what, if any, conclusions can be drawn from this, I don't know, except I fear Matt's challenge is more daunting and we need to improve defensively - and quickly - which we probably all know anyway.

Not got the pace to be an effective winger at this level but he's got the right attributes to play in a 532 or similar. Left back is a real worry if Rob isn't effective there anymore. Hart is a good backup but probably too much of a defensive liability for first choice, especially while we are struggling.

In the FL Paper, for what it's worth, he was given our highest mark out of 10 and I would argue he was indeed our best player over the 90. The architect of the first goal is no 7, Gladwin. No one tracks his runs from deep with the ball. Which one should Hart go for? After the second goal that was a collective defensive nonsense, smallest guy on the pitch getting in the initial header that Rose saved, Hart was totally exposed. There was nothing in front of him. It should be remembered too, he's not got a lot of football in his legs yet because of injuries so I expect may have been feeling it a bit. As others have said they targeted our left flank because of the space that was in front of Sam. He can't play in two positions at once. TBh, the second goal from one of the worst refereeing decisions I have seen in recent memory, killed us and gave Crawley, including their up to then subdued fans even though they were 1 up,a new lease of life. Hart must have had a storming game in the 87 minutes not in the highlights if he was the Sutton MoM after consideration of this defending. He is supposed to be marking Darcy #10. I think we can all agree that the ref had a shocker. Were it not for two very poor decisions, the score could well have been 1-1, not 2-0, going into the last 30 minutes.

On the contrary, results have been extremely inconsistent. They were far, far above expectations in our first EFL season as has been well-documented. In stark contrast the last 20 matches have yielded a meagre 7 points. I’d say they were well ahead of where we can reasonably expected last season as well. To my mind any season where we avoid relegation at this level (at this moment in time) is a very good one. Before we fell away last season we were starting to think play offs push again - extraordinary in my mind. Close to the biggest story in UK football. Perhaps pipped by Luton last season. The season before last Matt did exceptionally well in this league, last season he kept us up without any risk of relegation which was another fine job. But I think with certain players he lost good relations and things went pear-shaped at the end of the season when perhaps players took their foot off the gas when we had nothing to play for. I suppose we are now seeing the recovery of this with a new squad. The difference is that he was able to assemble a squad in the Nat league without a transfer window and in a league that's slightly less competitive. This season he has had to do it while in the deep end. One thing we do have as a positive, is his signings have looked decent regardless of the bad form.
