We just did not have the quality up front against an organised Shots defence. We had chances but didn't take them or test their keeper.Good Sutton performance for the rest of the team which deserved a draw at least.

I did not realise their goal was a deflection.

What saddened and angered me about today, was that football at our level is suppose to be a family game. Clubs have been encouraging kids and their parents to go to matches for that friendly match day experience you don't get higher up. Our club and I personally especially having a disabled child have put in a lot of work and effort to change the perception of the game over the last 5-10 yrs. To go to Aldershot a club in the next level and experience 1970's cattle herding was entirely out of step with where most of us want to see football go, and would have been totally counter productive to anyone witnessing it.
After complaining we did get moved a almost completely empty 'community stand' and the steward was very nice to us, but that isn't the point. There is no point having such a stand if you don't use it.
Today was a very blokey type through back atmosphere, no consideration for the young, the disabled or female and elderly folk.
I am very disappointed in them, and hope they learn from today.

(Intruding on your board, on my Saturday evening browse....)
Firstly sorry that you didn't quite trip up Aldershot, as Borough also narrowly failed to do to Dover. Secondly, Os, you are very right about the sudden culture change visiting the National clubs. Eastbourne had the same experience in their three-season adventure in the Conference Prem: away fans deliberately herded into distant corners of a stadium and scowled at by stewards who were either officious, intimidating or plain Neanderthal. And this, remember, is Eastbourne whose supporters average age is about sixty-three and who are about as threatening as an orthopaedic cushion. It seriously impaired the whole experience, and relegation back to genial Conference South was quite a blessing. Cannot understand why these clubs do it. It's a kind of self-importance, I think.
Do head for the coast next weekend, where I guarantee an amiable afternoon with a total absence of evil stewards. And possibly a decent evenly matched game...

For 70 minutes there was little between the two sides, with defences mostly on top. If anything, I thought we took the game to them. The Aldershot players showed a bit more composure on the ball, with our threat coming mainly down the flanks, but on the odd occasion when we did have a sight of goal the ball was fired in too hurriedly and off-target.
The goal came on the counter-attack. Although we cleared the initial threat our defence was stretched and when the ball fell to their extra man in attack, in a central position, he had space to thump the ball home. The game then opened up and Shots had two more opportunities, one thwarted by a great saving challenge from Stuart Fleetwood and the other by a decent save from Ross Worner. We had some late pressure of our own but failed to work their keeper.
What this match told us is that there's not much of a gap between the middle of our division and the middle of the one above, but that our squad isn't yet quite good enough for the step up.

Well we did OK but weren't good enough in the final third on the day. They had a decent defence but not much else. In terms of midfield and upfront Gomis and Eastwood were IMO head and shoulders above the rest of the players on the pitch. As to trying to house us in a small seated area it was fairly obvious at a very early stage there wouldn't be enough room, strange - guess part of them trying to cut costs. Would also say we could have tried to play a bit more football earlier, once the goal went in we got it down and dominated for a spell (obvs they started to get a couple of chances on the break as we threw more men up late in game). Would have been good to have seen a replay.

Regarding the game, we had the best of the play but despite getting into dangerous positions on numerous occasions, we seemed to lack the killer pass or clinical finishing needed. No real shot on target that I remember.
Good team performance though and great support.
As for the 'match day experience' to use the current vernacular, it was a bit odd. Asked where our terracing was, was told we all had to sit due to the number of away fans.
I then asked another steward as the stand looked more than half full and was told it was for health and safety reasons as rain was predicted and the terrace is too slippery when wet. Health and safety went out the window when we had more fans than seats and luckily, despite a few drops of rain, I did not fall over. No real ale either, only cold bitter on tap (our club bar really does put some others to shame on that front).
Time to count the pennies from the run and concentrate on the league and the FA trophy now. That's my football cliche of the day.

They did have T.E.A but unfortunately it only came in bottles. It wasn't too bad.

Standing on the terraces it was rather obvious that it was a deflection Stewart. Can't tell if the shot was on target or not but let's assume it was then they had 2 shots on target and we had none. I think we beat them 3 corners to one though. Agree with Garethl that Gomis and Eastmond were quality. First to the ball especially in the first half and some of Gomis's play was exceptional

Thought U Guys would like to read this "To be fair Nigel I thought you were worth a draw. I was fully resumed before the match to be coming to you on Monday night. Had you had a bit more killer instinct in front of goal, then you may have even got a result. I apologise for my clubs handling of your supporters yesterday, segregation was not needed, and the sooner the powers to be listen to the genuine people, that could make the whole football day out much more enjoyable for us all. Next time we meet, I will personally shut the shop and come and bring you over myself. I think it was Andy that came over. I think as a shop just opened, he was quite surprised what I had collected. Hope to see you soon, Paul Blundell, atfc. : Sun, 25 Oct 2015 08:44:20 +0000

Much said about the game already. Good performance from Sutton yesterday just pulled up short, particularly in the last third. Interesting comments from the Shots fans forum. Collins anonymous? Really? I thought their front two were exactly that because of the performance of Skip and Dean Beckwith who has played very well in the last three matches.
Sadly, the first time the game got stretched and we conceded. Before that they never looked like scoring. I thought Sutton was the better side yesterday but as we know, in football, that doesn't guarantee a victory.
Not sure one match can judge how we would fair in the Premier Division but this was a great effort from the lads just missing that cutting edge up front.
As for the match day experience, my slant is far more positive. The stewards I spoke to were excellent, even let me go out of the ground to get my 'phone from the car. A welcome from one on entering The Phoenix Lounge and just generally helpful. I admit the pre-match accommodation issue was a bit of a farce but common sense prevailed in the end. Unfortunately, segregation appears to be the norm above CS level and something we would have to get used to should we reach that level.
And their fans applauded us when the away attendance figure was announced, a point lost on one of our number if his reaction was anything to go by. Other than the result, i enjoyed yesterday, even the ref had a good game.

Radio Surrey coverage is described as live updates from Aldershot and Maidenhead, along with music & features - so not Live coverage then... It was live online, very biased toward Aldershot!

It doesn't show that the middle of the Conference National is marginally better than the middle of the Conference South at all. Anyone thinking a one off game can show the strength of two leagues is a fool. It is like saying there wasn't much difference between the First Division and the Conference when we beat Coventry City in a one off match. Ridiculous.
We played well but were toothless up front and didn't make their keeper work at all which was disappointing. If you can't hit the target you don't deserve to win no matter how much of the ball you have and how good your approach play is.
Eastmond is a class above anyone else in our squad IMO. Won almost everything in the middle of the park and is a very intelligent player. We'll be lucky to hold onto him for long.
