It doesn't show that the middle of the Conference National is marginally better than the middle of the Conference South at all. Anyone thinking a one off game can show the strength of two leagues is a fool. It is like saying there wasn't much difference between the First Division and the Conference when we beat Coventry City in a one off match. Ridiculous. We played well but were toothless up front and didn't make their keeper work at all which was disappointing. If you can't hit the target you don't deserve to win no matter how much of the ball you have and how good your approach play is. Eastmond is a class above anyone else in our squad IMO. Won almost everything in the middle of the park and is a very intelligent player. We'll be lucky to hold onto him for long. If you look at what we do know it does help paint a better picture, teams in recent years that have been promoted from the South are tending to do far better then in previous times. Dover, Bromley, Eastleigh are all more than holding their own. We controlled the mid field with players such as Eastmond, Gomis and Tom, and I think that shows how good we are in that department, at the back we were certainly no worse than Aldershot and our keeper is certainly National league material. We lacked in that final 3rd, whether we had a off day or we simply were not good enough, its difficult to tell over 1 match, but we would have to be better in front of goal to win matches against National sides. There has been many very good footballing sides relegated because they couldn't score goals and many a poor team kept alive because they could. Ebbsfleet are top of our league because they have both.

It still doesn't tell you much IMO. Eastleigh were always going to do well due to their financial clout.
Dover are doing well but Jim Parmenter will no doubt be putting a lot of money in. Maybe not to the extent of Eastleigh or Forest Green Rovers but he didn't buy them in 2004, clear all their debts and drag them back up from the Ryman Division One South to the Conference National just to see them struggle once there.
Dartford found it a struggle and should have been down a season earlier than they did and Welling have found it tough up there and they are probably the club the most similar in size to SUFC in terms of crowds and resources.
For every Bromley you have a Boreham Wood.
I would love to see SUFC get promoted and play against clubs who have good support and can create an atmosphere. I for one am completely bored of playing the likes of Whitehawk, Hayes and Yeading, Basingstoke, Bishop's Stortford etc.
No disrespect to them but they just don't fill me with any excitement. Playing Aldershot was the first time since Dover in the play offs that I have looked forward to a Sutton match.
It is depressing how sh*t games at GGL are. No atmosphere due to precious people getting upset when people have tried to create some in the past, usually no away supporters and people more interested in chatting than watching the game and getting behind the team.
I for one enjoyed the visit to the Rec, an old fashioned ground with good, vocal home support added to by our good vocal away support. The pitch was excellent and the stewards were very helpful and welcoming. The only issue was that they underestimated the amount of fans we'd be bringing as someone said they had been told to expect about 100 SUFC fans.

It is a bit depressing at times trying to get noise going at the GGL end and only ever having 4 people join in...

Maybe I'm easily pleased, I think Sutton try and play attacking football that includes two wingers. Go on the Aldershot forum they are fed-up with negative football. A higher level does not mean better entertainment and what is wrong with chatting with friends? Football is a social event. Maybe you were referring to the fans who constantly looking at their phones, now that is odd

I wasn't on about the performance of the team at GGL as to why it is sh*t and more to do with the overall match day experience and atmosphere. It is very flat.

The performances on the pitch have been good this season, no question about it. I personally wouldn't go as far as saying I don't look forward to the games, but I definitely prefer the away days to home games for obvious reasons really. Despite the crowds going up at GGL the noise attacking the GGL End is still poor. At least there is some atmosphere attacking the new Rec End I suppose

This is looking like being the first season since 1991 where I won't attend a single home match..just can't bring myself to come down now that plastic pitch has been installed! I am determined to catch an away match at some stage though. As currently living on the Kent coast Margate most likely.

Whilst we still wallow in the disappointment of going out on Saturday, here's who the other National League South sides got paired up with in the First Round Proper:-
Port Vale v Maidenhead Cambridge United v Basingstoke Hartlepool v Havant/Cheltenham Grimsby v St. Albans Maidstone v Yeovil Whitehawk v Tranmere/Lincoln Wealdstone v Colchester

Astounds me to think the pitch would put someone off coming!! It helps make games so much better. Home atmosphere has been done to death before. It won't change until you find 50 odd more people plus to get involved and really the big stadium only starts to feel alive once you get a 4 figure crowd in.

Do you know the best thing to make more of an atmosphere at home? Ironically it's segregation. The issue at home is that fans are dotted around the ground whilst on Saturday we were all penned in one place.
In terms of "No atmosphere due to precious people getting upset when people have tried to create some in the past, usually no away supporters and people more interested in chatting than watching the game and getting behind the team" - I'm sorry, but what's the solution? Ban people from talking to each other? Banning people from being offended by some of the things shouted out? We're meant to be an inclusive club and every supporter has the right to support our team the way they fell most comfortable with otherwise they just will stop coming. There are a few things I don't personally like about how some of our supporters support our team, but I'm certainly not arrogant enough to tell them otherwise, and if they are not doing any harm or overstepped the mark of decency then I have no right to either. What I can do is choose not to join into that. A good example of this was the constant shouts of "midget keeper" in the 3 games against Hemel. I thought they were tedious, but if those supporters want to do that then that's their choice. Away games generally have a better atmosphere because most of the away support are in the same part of the ground and there is more of a sense of sticking together as the "minority".
But telling people how they can or can't support their club, and they are doing it wrong because they are not singing or chanting or shouting abuse at players/officials is a sure fire way of wanting people NOT to come back.

Good points well made. Strangely I quite enjoy segregated games such as the fairly recent Hereford and Kidderminster games, simply because of the noise and the fact we're all together. Of course football is a social event and we all spend a lot of the time chatting to mates about the football as well as other things - no problem. Can completely understand about the midget keeper shouts/songs after 3 games, and why people don't join in with them - it was mostly done for a laugh without going over the top with swearing too much. It's the same with other random crap we end up doing like "he's got a cheeseburger in his hand". A good laugh for us but not what everybody else is gonna join in with. I suppose what I don't get is why, when we actually do sing the standard "oh Sutton we love you" and other similar songs up the GGL End there is still nobody joining in, but up the Rec End it's a completely different story
